To Serve and Deplete: Exploring Outcomes of Emotional Exhaustion in Servant Leadership and the Moderating Role of Self-Leadership
Get PDFThis study explores the outcomes of emotional exhaustion in servant leadership, a leadership style through which leaders enact influence by serving, empowering, and developing others—that is, \u27leading from behind.\u27 Drawing on conservation of resources theory, I explored how servant leadership behaviors may adversely affect the practicing leader through emotional exhaustion and laterally influence the subsequent outcomes of work disengagement and work–family conflict. Additionally, I investigated the moderating influence of self-leadership on the relationship between servant leadership and emotional exhaustion. I tested a moderated mediation model with regression analysis using two independent samples of organizational leaders surveyed at two different time points (Sample 1: N = 79; Sample 2: N = 379). The findings did not support a positive relationship between servant leadership and emotional exhaustion but did support positive relationships between emotional exhaustion and work disengagement, and emotional exhaustion and work–family conflict. Several limitations of the study are discussed, along with implications and future research directions
Towards Developing a Digital Twin Implementation Framework for Manufacturing Systems
Get PDFThis research studies the implementation of digital twins in manufacturing systems. Digital transformation is relevant due to changing manufacturing techniques and user demands. It brings new business opportunities, changes organizations, and allows factories to compete in the digital era. Nevertheless, digital transformation presents many uncertainties that could bring problems to a manufacturing system. Some potential problems are loss of data, cybersecurity threats, unpredictable behavior, and so on. For instance, there are doubts about how to integrate the physical and virtual spaces. Digital twin (DT) is a modern technology that can enable the digital transformation of manufacturing companies. DT works by collecting real-time data of machines, products, and processes. DT monitors and controls operations in real-time helping in the identification of problems. It performs simulations to improve manufacturing processes and end-products. DT presents several benefits for manufacturing systems. It gives feedback to the physical system, increases the system’s reliability and availability, reduces operational risks, helps to achieve organizational goals, reduces operations and maintenance costs, predicts machine failures, etc. DT presents all these benefits without affecting the system’s operation. xv This dissertation analyzes the implementation of digital twins in manufacturing systems. It uses systems thinking methods and tools to study the problem space and define the solution space. Some of these methods are the conceptagon, systemigram, and the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ in Russian acronym). It also uses systems thinking tools such as the CATWOE, the 9-windows tool, and the ideal final result (IFR). This analysis gives some insights into the digital twin implementation issues and potential solutions. One of these solutions is to build a digital twin implementation framework Next, this study proposes the development of a small-scale digital twin implementation framework. This framework could help users to create digital twins in manufacturing systems. The method to build this framework uses a Model-Based Systems Engineering approach and the systems engineering “Vee” model. This framework encompasses many concepts from the digital twin literature. The framework divides these concepts along three spaces: physical, virtual, and information. It also includes other concepts such as digital thread, data, ontology, and enabling technologies. Finally, this dissertation verifies the correctness of the proposed framework. The verification process shows that the proposed framework can develop digital twins for manufacturing systems. For that purpose, this study creates a process digital twin simulation using the proposed framework. This study presents a mapping and a workflow diagram to help users use the proposed framework. How Mergers and Acquisitions Impact Corporate Social Responsibility
Get PDFCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important area of study due to the multiple positive firm outcomes associated with an effective CSR program. In addition, CSR has become a more high-profile topic due to recent events in the United States stemming from societal unrest in 2020 and beyond. Therefore, understanding the possible impacts on CSR from firm strategic decisions like mergers and acquisitions is important as well. Mergers and acquisitions are a fruitful venue for examining CSR because (a) mergers and acquisitions are consequential actions that are outside of the daily operations of the firm and have impacts on firm wealth, and (b) cooperation and trade-offs from the firm’s stakeholders is required to secure approval and successfully execute the transaction. This study’s objectives are two-fold. First, impacts to CSR, using Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) ratings as a proxy, from corporate merger and acquisition activity are examined to determine overall impacts as well as relative impacts to various categories of industries. Second, ESG pillar ratings, as well as total (ESG) ratings, are used to: (a) study the individual impact of the pillars on overall ratings, (b) examine relationships between CSR and firm performance, and (c) how ESG ratings have grown over time as well as which pillars have experienced the most growth in various industry categories. Using Difference in Differences (DID) statistical methodology, results indicate mergers and acquisitions act as a moderator to increase CSR in the combined company. xii Results indicate companies that completed a significant merger (i.e., $1 billion or greater) in 2019 saw their ESG ratings increase by 3.84 points in 2020 and 2021. This finding is explained by Stakeholder theory, which holds that firms must successfully address the implicit and explicit needs of their stakeholders to gain support and buy-in for firm plans. Thus, when firms undertake mergers or acquisitions, they must address their universe of stakeholders to be successful. In addition, results indicate that merged firms in non-environmentally sensitive industries experienced a greater increase in their CSR programs compared to environmentally sensitive industries. The Environmental Pillar was found to have contributed the most when examining the individual pillar impacts on total ESG scores via regression analysis. Interestingly, higher ESG scores (a proxy for successful CSR programs) were not found to be related to superior firm performance as examined through a regression analysis of a key firm financial performance ratio. Finally, ESG scores were found to have grown over the study period 2016-202. During this time, the Governance pillar grew the most for environmentally sensitive industries while the Environmental pillar experienced the greatest growth for environmentally non-sensitive industries. The study’s results contribute to our knowledge of how meaningful firm strategic actions like mergers and acquisitions impact CSR in the combined company. In addition, the study makes various methodological contributions via the statistical methods used, studying industry effects and further examining the effectiveness of ESG ratings as a proxy for CSR performance. He relates some of the jobs he worked growing up, and describes the popguns that children Down the Bay made using reeds and chinaberries, and other forms of recreation. Mr. Stiell describes the boundaries of Down the Bay from his experience, and shares some memories from attending high school at Most Pure Heart of Mary. He reflects on the impacts of urban renewal and I-10 on the community, and mentions some of the accomplished people who came from Down the Bay

Ms. Cunningham is a descendant of Lucrecia Perryman, and she describes the experience of learning about the archaeological work that uncovered aspects of Ms. Perryman’s history. She describes memories of segregation and of the Civil Rights Movement, memories of John L. LeFlore, and her father’s experiences as a postman in Mobile. Perceptions of College Students with Disabilities Regarding the Impact of Instructional Supports on Academic Success
Get PDFThis qualitative phenomenological study explored how college students with disabilities (SWDs) accessed accommodations from their universities and their perceptions of service delivery by university faculty and staff. An additional purpose of this study was to seek the type and effectiveness of accommodations received by college SWDs. I recruited participants through the disability resource office of a regional university in the Southeastern United States. The diverse population studied was college SWDs, and the phenomenon of interest was their experience with receiving accommodations from their university. The seven participants who took part in interviews identified as college students with a disability that affected them academically who had accessed disability services at their university. The findings from the research revealed that the two most frequently provided accommodations were related to testing and included extended time to complete exams and testing in a distraction-free environment. Participants also reported that their educational experiences were positively enhanced when accommodations were appropriately administered. Finally, recommendations for future research limitations were discussed
