Enhancing domain-specific named entity recognition via segmentation and pseudo-labeled annotation
Source Agritrop Cirad (https://agritrop.cirad.fr/615524/) * Autres projets (id;sigle;titre): 101079136;AI4AGRI;(EU) Romanian Excellence Center on Artificial Intelligence in Earth Observation Data for Agriculture// ;;(FRA) Défi région Occitanie// ;O3T;(FRA) Observation de la terre et territoires en transition//International audienceNamed Entity Recognition (NER) in specialized domains poses major challenges due to the scarcity of annotated data and the limitations of existing models. One challenge lies in handling long documents, which often requires segmenting the text into smaller chunks that fit within the model's input window. Although several segmentation strategies exist, their impact on NER performance in new domains remains underexplored. Another challenge is domain adaptation: while openschema NER models can perform reasonably well under zero-shot settings, they often struggle in highly specialized contexts without additional supervision. To address these issues, we combine segmentation strategy selection with a semi-supervised finetuning pipeline based on pseudo-labeled annotations. First, we compare four segmentation strategies to identify which offers the best trade-off between precision and recall in zero-shot settings. Then, we fine-tune two open-schema NER models—GLiNER and NuNER—first on a manually annotated dataset, and subsequently on a large pseudo-labeled dataset built from model agreement. Both models are evaluated on a held-out test set and on the full manually annotated corpus. Experiments on French-language documents specifically focused on the underexplored domain of territorial food systems reveal that fine-tuning on pseudo-labeled data—obtained through cross-model agreement—yields better performance than relying solely on human-annotated data. The results also highlight the strengths and weaknesses of different segmentation strategies and confirm the importance of optimizing segmentation choices for NER in domain-specific low-resource settings.
International audienceThis article draws on an ethnographic fieldwork in an organization that distributes emergency aid packages to mothers experiencing poverty and their children. Based on these observations, I analyse the political and morality issues generated by the need to choose amongst beneficiaries. As the members of Petits pots solidaires are unable to help all those who request aid, they must decide who to prioritize and how to adapt their practices to best help those the most in need. Thus, while initially based on the principle of unconditional aid for all applicants, the organization now only helps families that fit their criteria. This transformation prioritizes the urgency of situations and distinguishes beneficiaries with attitudes deemed adequate from beneficiaries with "bad behaviour". By examining these logics and their dynamics and though based on a singular setting, the article leads to more general conclusions about the social evaluation of emergency situations.À partir d’une enquête menée au sein d’une association qui distribue des colis d’urgence aux mères précaires et à leurs enfants, cet article interroge comment une organisation hiérarchise les demandes d’aide d’urgence qui lui sont adressées.
A particle method for stationary transport equations
We present and study a particle method for the stationary solutions of a class of transport equations. This method is inspired by non-stationary particle methods, the time variable being replaced by one spatial variable. Particles trajectories are computed using the "time-dependent" equations, and then the approximation is based on a quadrature method using the particle locations as quadrature points. We prove the convergence of the scheme under suitable regularity assumptions on the data and the solution, together with a "characteristic completeness" assumption (the characteristic curves fullfill the whole computational domain). We also provide an error estimate. The scheme is tested numerically on a two dimensional linear equation and we present a numerical study of convergence. Finally, we use this method to carry out numerical simulations of a landscape evolution model, where an erodible topography evolves under the effects of water erosion and sedimentation. The scheme is then useful to deal with wet/dry areas.</div
: Charles Nodier and the romantic quest for the voice of origins
International audienceThe importance given to the treatment of orality in the works of Charles Nodier has often been emphasized. Nodier, a writer plagued by a romantic nostalgia for a time of origins associated with the practice of living speech, explores this theme extensively. His linguistic studies also support the Cratylian thesis of an organic continuity between sensory perception and its vocalization regarding the birth of language. Similarly, his interest in works written in « patois » and popular songs reflects his persistent fascination with a certain poetic ideal tied to the concept of orality. However, it is without illusion, and as a child of his time, that Nodier persists in recreating a voice of origins in which he can’t fully believe.
Multiscale demixing for multivariate self-similarity estimation
International audienceEstimating Hurst exponents is essential for analyzing long-range dependencies in multivariate time series, which often exhibit self-similarity and scale invariance. However, traditional eigenanalysis-based methods can introduce distortions, particularly when scaling amplitudes vary. To address this, we propose a novel approach that improves estimation accuracy by jointly diagonalizing wavelet random matrices. By approximating a common instantaneous mixing matrix across multiple scales, our method circumvents the limitations of scale-wise eigenvalue regressions, leading to more reliable self-similarity parameter estimates. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate its advantages over conventional techniques in both orthogonal and non-orthogonal mixing scenarios.
Major histocompatibility complex class IIB disassortative mate choice in a genetically monogamous seabird
International audienceAmong species reproducing sexually, mating strategies represent a major component of individual fitness. The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is an extremely diverse set of genes responsible for immunological recognition and defence against pathogens. Although dissimilarity between mates at the major histocompatibility complex has been proposed to drive mate choice through increased offspring pathogen resistance, evidence is mixed. In addition, explorations of the role of the major histocompatibility complex in other mating strategies, such as divorce, are rare. We investigated whether dissimilarity at the major histocompatibility complex class IIB is associated with mate choice and divorce probability in the genetically monogamous black-legged kittiwake ( Rissa tridactyla ). We found that first-time male breeders, as well as divorced males, were paired with females more dissimilar at the major histocompatibility complex class IIB than expected under random mating. We did not find evidence for mate choice based on major histocompatibility complex class IIB dissimilarity when considering females. In addition, in the studied population, divorce probability was very low compared with other populations and did not significantly vary with the dissimilarity of the pair at the major histocompatibility complex class IIB. Our results pave the way to a better understanding of the complex role of major histocompatibility complex dissimilarity in mating decisions of species displaying mutual choice and biparental care
Dual Opioid–Neuropeptide FF Small Molecule Ligands Demonstrate Analgesia with Reduced Tolerance Liabilities
International audienceNeuropeptide FF (NPFF) receptor antagonists prevent morphine-mediated antinociceptive tolerance, and compounds with dual mu opioid receptor (MOR) agonist and NPFF antagonist activity produce antinociception without tolerance. Compounds synthesized showed affinities in radioligand competition binding assays in the nM and µM range at the opioid and NPFF receptors, respectively, and displayed substitution-dependent functional profiles in the [35S]GTPγS functional assay. From six compounds screened in vivo for antinociception and ability to prevent NPFF-induced hyperalgesia in mouse warm water tail withdrawal tests, compound 22b produced dose-dependent MOR-mediated antinociception with an ED50 value (and 95% confidence interval) of 6.88 (4.71–9.47) nmol, i.c.v., and also prevented NPFF-induced hyperalgesia. Meanwhile, 22b did not demonstrate the respiratory depression, hyperlocomotion, or impaired intestinal transit of morphine. Moreover, repeated treatment with 22b produced a 1.6-fold rightward shift in antinociceptive dose response, significantly less acute antinociceptive tolerance than morphine. Evaluated for microsomal stability in vitro and in vivo pharmacokinetic profile, 22b showed suitable microsomal stability paired in vivo with a large apparent volume of distribution and a clearance smaller than the hepatic flow in rats, suggesting no extra-hepatic metabolism. In conclusion, the present study confirms that dual-action opioid–NPFF ligands may offer therapeutic promise as analgesics with fewer liabilities of use
