Melting glaciers as symbols of tourism paradoxes
International audienceVisitors are increasingly drawn to disappearing glacier landscapes for their beauty and scientific value. This Comment examines the paradoxes reshaping relationships among glaciers, people and communities, and highlights research needed to avoid maladaptation harming local communities
International audienceThis article examines how three mathematics education researchers and teacher educators elucidate an algorithm for computing square roots. Drawing on Hadamard’s (1945) model of the phases of mathematical invention (preparation, incubation, illumination, validation) and on the concept of practical epistemology (Sensevy, 2007), the study highlights the diversity of frameworks mobilized to tackle a non-routine task. The analysis reveals both generic features and specificities closely tied to each participant’s professional trajectory and training practices. The article concludes by discussing the relevance, for initial and continuing teacher education, of acknowledging and working with this plurality of ways of “doing mathematics.”Cet article rend compte de la manière dont trois formatrices-chercheuses en didactique des mathématiques élucident un algorithme de calcul de la racine carrée.
The Role of Commitment in Optimal Stopping
We investigate the role of commitment in optimal stopping by studying all the variants between Prophet Inequality (PI) and Pandora's Box (PB). Both problems deal with a set of variables drawn from known distributions. In PI the gambler observes an adversarial order of these variables with the goal of selecting one that maximizes the expected value against a prophet who knows the exact values realized. The gambler has to irrevocably decide at each step whether to select the value or discard it (commitment). On the other hand, in PB the gambler selects the order of inspecting the variables and for each pays an observation cost to see the actual value realized, aiming to choose one to maximize the net cost of the value chosen minus the observation cost paid. The gambler in PB can return and select any variable already seen (no commitment). For all the variants between these problems that arise by changing parameters such as (1) commitment (2) observation cost (3) order selection, we concisely summarize the known results and fill the gaps of variants not yet studied. We also uncover connections to Ski-Rental, a classic online algorithm problem

Social Choice with Text: Collective Decision Making in the LLM Era
The recent rapid advances in natural language processing (NLP) and the development of large language models (LLMs) open up new research directions in other areas of AI, including the broad area of decision making. In this position paper we identify a novel research agenda for the field of computational social choice by charting the significant range of opportunities for integrating text-processing algorithms into the design and analysis of mechanisms for collective decision making

Attitudes of French laypeople toward children’s medically-assisted dying
International audienceThe issue of medically-assisted dying in pediatric care, including euthanasia and deep sedation, is ethically complex. Despite its relevance, no research has applied Information Integration Theory to evaluate the acceptability of these practices in pediatric care, which is what we did in the present study. A sample of 166 French laypeople read 54 scenarios involving end-of-life situations involving children and assessed the acceptability of a physician's decision in each one. Scenarios included four factors: child's discernment capacity, child's request to die, parental consent, and physician's action. Parental consent and the child's request were the most influential factors in respondents' judgments, followed by the child's discernment and physician's action. Cluster analysis revealed four groups: "Situation-dependent," "Always acceptable," "Not acceptable except in rare circumstances," and "Parental consent." Most people were sensitive to situational factors influencing the acceptability of children's medically assisted dying
