Using Generative AI to Increase Skeptics’ Engagement with Climate Science

    No full text
National audienceClimate skepticism remains a significant barrier to public engagement with accurate climate information, because skeptics actively engage in information avoidance to escape exposure to climate facts. Here we show that generative AI can enhance engagement with climate science among skeptical audiences by subtly modifying headlines to align better with their existing perspectives, with out compromising factual integrity. In a controlled experiment (N = 2000) using a stylized social media interface, headlines of climate science articles modified by an open-source large language model (Llama3 70B, version 3.0) led to more bookmarks and more upvotes, and these effects were strongest among the most skeptical participants. Participants who engaged with climate science as a result of this intervention showed a shift in beliefs towards alignment with the scientific consensus by the end of the study. These results show that generative AI can alter the information diet skeptics consume, with the promise that scalable, sustained engagement will promote better epistemic health. They highlight the potential of generative AI, showing that while it can be misused by bad actors, it also holds promise for advancing public understanding of science when responsibly deployed by well-intentioned actors

Some invariant classes for parabolic renormalization in the multicritical case

    No full text
Parabolic renormalization associates to a holomorphic map f with a parabolic fixed point another holomorphic map with a parabolic fixed point. This procedure is essential for understanding the phenomenon of parabolic enrichment, which occurs when one perturbs f appropriately.Shishikura defined in [Shi98] (see also [LY14]) a class of maps that is stable under this parabolic renormalization operator. These maps have only one critical point in their immediate basins. We extend here this result to the more general classes of maps conjugated on their immediate basins to finite Blaschke products. For these classes, we introduce an analogue of Milnor's mapping schemes [Mil12] and describe the action of parabolic renormalization on the scheme. This shall be a starting point to the fine study of perturbation of these bigger classes of maps

    No full text
In educational contexts shaped by identity, political, and symbolic tensions, languages can no longer be taught or learned as neutral tools. This article offers an epistemological reflection on the relevance of crisology (Morin, 1990, 2005) and complex thinking in language didactics, viewing conflict not as a dysfunction, but as a transformative dynamic of knowledge, pedagogical stances, and practices. Drawing on the works of Zarate, Castellotti, and Kramsch, we argue that mainstream approaches tend to pacify or neutralize tensions.

At a time when biodiversity is under threat and humanity faces major challenges, the Muséum de Toulouse offers a contemporary perspective through restoration campaigns of its Naturalia collections and their enrichment with newly created heritage-oriented taxidermy specimens. The museum is regularly confronted with ethical issues when working on protected species and heritage objects. The taxidermy mounts have been conceived to ensure long-term preservation and restorability — a process we refer to as preparation–conservation. This practice raises questions about the roles and boundaries between the professions of taxidermist and conservator-restorer of naturalized specimens.
