Meaning Holism and Indeterminacy of Reference in Ontologies (Extended Abstract)*
International audienceAccording to meaning holism, the meanings of all the words in a language are interdependent. If this was true, then the very practice of building largely interconnected set of ontologies would be threatened. We examine here the extent of the severity of meaning holism for ontology engineering, based on a definition of the meaning of a class term in an ontology, with regard to the classical analytic/synthetic distinction. We show that meaning holism is not as pervasive in ontologies as traditionally assumed in philosophy of language when interpreting the meaning of a class term as a collection of statements expressing necessary conditions on this term. Still, meaning holism presents substantial challenges for ontology engineering and requires mitigation strategies. We also investigate the related phenomenon of indeterminacy of reference and show how anchoring formal ontologies in natural language can mitigate this problem, even if not fully control it

Il était une fois... des petits cochons
International audienceC'est sur l'habitat des cochons en estive que cette présentation s'est concentrée, en partant du constat que les recherches archéologiques sur les pâturages d'altitude dans les Pyrénées se sont, jusqu’à présent, principalement concentrées sur l’élevage ovin, pour lequel les traces matérielles sont les plus visibles. Pourtant, toutes les sources — qu’elles soient archéozoologiques, écrites ou orales — attestent de la présence d’autres espèces animales dans les pâturages d’altitude, conduites en troupeaux monospécifiques ou associés à d’autres animaux. Bien que l’élevage porcin en haute montagne soit documenté dans toute la chaîne pyrénéenne, y compris dans les Pyrénées orientales, il est particulièrement mentionné dans les sources médiévales et modernes relatives aux montagnes basques. Mais quelles traces archéologiques en subsistent ?Ces dernières années, l'hypothèse selon laquelle les nombreux tertres recensés dans les estives du Pays basque français par l’archéologue Jacques Blot — distincts des tumulus protohistoriques — pourraient correspondre à des cabanes à cochons qui reflèteraient l’importance de l’élevage porcin médiéval et modernes, 'est largement répandue. Après un état des lieux historiographique, cette communication présente des travaux interdisciplinaires récents visant à valider ou infirmer cette hypothèse. Ces recherches combinent: i) des enquêtes ethnographiques sur les pratiques contemporaines d’élevage porcin ; l’analyse et la cartographie des inventaires de Jacques Blot ; la comparaison de ces inventaires avec de nouvelles prospections de terrain ; l’exploration géophysique (cartographie par résistivité électrique et tomographie); et des carottages sédimentaires.Les résultats de ces analyses soulignent la difficulté à caractériser ces structures mais apportent aussi de nouveaux éclairages sur l’architecture construite au sein de ces tertres et sur leurs sols. L'enquête vaut la peine d'être poursuivie car ces tertres pourraient s'avérer essentiels à la compréhension des transformations socio-économiques du pastoralisme d’altitude au cours du dernier millénaire
How Information Complies with a Template: A Dual Mereological System
International audienceWe propose an axiomatic ontological framework for both informational templates and the substantial informational entities (named "fillers") that can comply with such templates. The mereological structure of a filler is provided by its slots, following seminal work by Bennett (2013) and the mereology of slots approach by Tarbouriech et al. (2024). Templates are composed of placeholders satisfying an extensional mereology. The parthood relation between placeholders is mirrored into the parthood between slots of the fillers compliant with those placeholders, where if a filler x complies with a placeholder a, the relation of mirroring is an isomorphism between a subset of slots of x and the template-parts of a. Some placeholders are mandatory and are mirrored into slots that need to be filled by a non-empty filler, whereas others are optional and are mirrored into slots that can be filled by an empty filler. We discuss mereological sum among placeholders and slots, order considerations, the distinction between empty fillers and empty concretizations (such as spaces or silences), the notion of semantic compliance and applications to clinical documents, relational databases and linguistics

Evaluation of the effectiveness of a digital escape room for learning veterinary anatomy
International audienceAnatomy plays a key role in veterinary training, and alternatives to traditional teaching methods, such as game‐based learning and escape rooms, are emerging as innovative and effective methods. However, the effectiveness of these approaches, particularly in areas such as veterinary anatomy, remains under‐researched. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital escape room in teaching veterinary anatomy to first‐year students at the Toulouse Veterinary School. It included interactive elements and puzzles based on veterinary anatomy content. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group ( n = 81) that engaged with the digital escape room or a control group ( n = 81). Pre‐ and post‐tests were conducted with a score out of 100 to assess knowledge acquisition, and the participants' perception of the digital escape room was evaluated using a questionnaire. When comparing the difference between pre‐ and post‐test scores, the experimental group showed a statistically significant difference ( p < 0.0001). When comparing the post‐test, the experimental group achieved a higher test scores with statistical significance comparing to the control group ( p < 0.0001), indicating improved knowledge acquisition. The questionnaire reported that the digital escape room helped increase motivation and interest in learning. However, the lowest score in student–teacher interaction indicates a potential lack of feedback to support student progress. Digital escape rooms are a promising effective and engaging tool for teaching veterinary anatomy, offering practicality, scalability, and potential application across various disciplines of veterinary studies
