Letter from the Editor-in-Chief 
Dear Readers,  
 
The UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law (“RIPL”), is pleased to announce the publication 
of our first issue for this board. We present to you an edition wholly dedicated to the topic of 
copyright. We begin with an essay authored by UIC Law Professor, Yolanda M. King on 
copyright challenges faced by tattoo artists. Next, we delve into a student case note analyzing 
the three-year look-back period in a copyright infringement case.  
 
The 2025-26 UIC RIPL Editorial Board has selected these written works because we wanted 
to dedicate this issue to a well-loved IP area—copyright.   
 
Professor King’s essay, Game On: The Continuing Challenges for Enforcement of Tattoo 
Copyrights, is the third in a series. Professor King continues her analysis of copyright 
challenges faced by tattoo artists when they attempt to establish an exclusive right to their 
inked works. She explores the ongoing enforcement challenges faced by tattoo artists when 
their works are used on videogame avatars without permission.  
 
In her case note, Timing the Tunes: Nealy V. Warner Chappell Music, Inc. and The Dance of 
Accrual, Statutes, and Damages, Joanna Goro examines the Eleventh Circuit Court of 
Appeals' decision on the application of the three-year look-back period when assessing 
damages for copyright infringement. Goro proposes a five-part balancing test to ensure 
copyright defendants are not prejudiced by a plaintiff’s delay in filing a copyright 
infringement claim.
