“It all starts with urgency…” Engaging with the local ekklesia of Thessalonica as a window and mirror en route to sustained missionary impact
Get PDFActs 17:1-9 and 1 Thessalonians 1, which form part of the church’s normative library, are two underestimated windows regarding our ecclesiological identity and our missional presence in the world. Both deal with Paul’s effective church planting efforts in the city of Thessalonica. By immersing ourselves in these texts, which also serve as hermeneutical mirrors, we intend to participate in a mimetic learning process, in order to come to terms with the nature of Paul’s embodied proclamation of the Gospel and his missional urgency. This urgency, which was embedded in his own imitation of the suffering and joy of Christ, was also transplanted into the lives of the Thessalonians. In turn, their commitment to the Word, their steadfastness in suffering, and their openness to people from different social strata and cultures turned them into embodied examples of the Gospel right across the Greek world. Hence, the challenge to us as contemporary believers is to creatively, yet urgently, synchronise our own theological agendas, as well as our ecclesial practices and missional activities, with these normative textual mirrors and windows
Archival Report: Northwestern University’s Neglected Sources on Partnership Organisations in ‘British Central Africa’
Get PDFThis archival report tracks two collections at Northwestern University (USA) which contain significant, albeit underutilised material on two organisations (the Capricorn Africa Society and Inter-racial Association of Southern Rhodesia) which played a notable role in attempts to implement the ‘Partnership’ philosophy that ostensibly underpinned the governing credo of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in the 1950s. A unique and notable component of the material are the significant first-hand observations and field notes by a contemporaneous American academic, Vernon McKay, with a scholarly interest in both organisations. Additionally, while the academic literature on the Society and the Association typically emphasises the role of white liberals, material at Northwestern also delineates both the role of those who would shortly play a leading role in the anti-colonial liberation struggle (such as Herbert Chitepo) as well as that of their reactionary white opponents. The report also provides a brief historiographical review of extant work on the organisations and other archival repositories that have traditionally informed this scholarship
Failure to discharge. A discussion of the insufficient legal recourse afforded to judgment debtors in the South African context
Get PDFUniversity Legal Aid Clinics are often confronted with aspects of the law which are quite alien to those faced by our colleagues in private practice. One such area is that of assisting judgment debtors who have fallen afoul of disreputable and often immoral money lenders and other judgment creditors. These creditors unilaterally charge exuberant and unlawful fees for interest and \u27legal\u27 costs, where amounts are simply added to the judgments expost facto. The issue of discharge then becomes hugely problematic as the courts do not mero motu step in to cancel emoluments attachment orders and other tools of collection employed by these creditors. It is argued that the South African legal system, including legislation in this regard, lends insufficient protection and recourse to indigent legal aid clients faced with this situation

The argument ranges from the motif of a single eye, via its cypiconic augmentation by pathos formulae of human actions and settings, to the field of visual narration by means of scenic description. In conclusion, examples of South African pictures are analysed in terms of key notions such as aposcopic vision in the scenic mode as a pathos formula or the theme of the social sublime

Exposure to violence and post-traumatic stress disorder in a rural adult population in South Africa
Get PDFThe purpose of the study is to identify exposure to violence and its consequences for health in an adult community in rural South African. The instruments used for the interviews included a 24-item Exposure-to-Violence checklist, a pose-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) interview schedule, and the Self-Reporting questionnaire (SRQ-20). The sample included 132 adults: 48 (35%)malesand 84(65%)females in cheage range of 19-74 (mean age 33, SD= 14,3). Fifty-seven (41 %) reported that they had nndergone a traumatic experience during their lifetime. Eleven (8%) adults were classified as having a PTSD. With increased exposure co violence, the PTSD score increased but the SRQ score (indicative of minor psychiatric morbidity) did not
Media framing of ‘Black tax’ in South Africa
Get PDFThe study examines the media framing of \u27Black Tax\u27, a colloquial concept that describes the financial responsibility young Black South Africans bear in supporting their extended families. Drawing theoretically from the discourses of African communalism and media framing, the study analyses narratives about Black Tax in media texts. Within the intersection and contesting contexts of socio-economic dynamics in South Africa, capitalism and African collectivist culture, the study reveals how the media frame ‘Black Tax’ in selected media texts. There is a dominant frame of ‘Black Tax’ as a financial burden and exploitation for young Black professionals, disregarding African communalism ethos and the generational legacies of poverty and inequality in South Africa
Advertising recall and perceptions of Cartagena as tourist destination: A relational study
Get PDFThe city of Cartagena in Colombia is recognised worldwide as a tourist destination with great wealth in terms of historical and cultural heritage. Tourists from all over the world visit the city, and have diverse experiences and opinions about the city. Advertising communication and the media contribute to the positioning of the city-brand with members of the tourist communities, understanding that each of them has different places of origin, varied ages and a different consumption of media. The objective of this study was to investigate the perception that a selected tourist community has about Cartagena as a tourist destination, considering demographic factors and the recall of advertising communication about the city in different media. After analysing the results from a survey of more than 400 tourists during a three-month period in 2023, it is concluded that their perception of the city is structured by a combination of positive and negative opinions. The place of origin, the age range and the various media have different relations with regard to the recall of advertising messages about the city, which encourages the development of tourism promotional strategies based on demographic and psychographic factors
