Transitivity Analysis of the Short Story “The Happy Prince” Written by Oscar Wilde
The present study investigates how the writer has established different characters in the story with the choice of linguistic features. For this purpose the data were taken from the famous short story titled “The Happy Prince” written by an Irish writer Oscar Wilde. The researcher applied the systemic functional linguistic theory presented by Halliday for transitivity analysis of the text. The text was manually analysed by the researcher. All the processes, participants and circumstances were recognized from the whole text. They were arranged in the form of tables and charts. The results were discussed in the qualitative method of research. The results show that three types of process i.e. material (43.41%), relational (20.26%) and verbal (17.04%) were predominant in the whole text. The highest dominance of the material process shows that the writer has created dynamic and tangible actions in the text. Similarly circumstances of location i.e. place (52%) and time (20%) were dominant in the whole text. The significance of the study was also discussed in the educational perspective

Prompted by the problem the effects of washback, this study was mainly intended to evaluate the washback effect of EFL teacher-made tests/examination on teaching-learning process of Communicative English Skills at Ambo University. Specifically, it examined the influence of the examination on the domains of teaching and learning. It further explored mediating factors of wash back on teachers and students’ practices. To this end, the data were collected from three years (2008, 2009, 2010 E.C.) communicative English skills course teachers’ made examinations through document analysis method. Supplemental data were also collected from EFL teachers and English major students respectively using interview and questionnaire. Both teachers and the students were selected on the bases of randomly sapling techniques. The study employed mixed methods to analyze and interpret the results of the study. The findingsof the study reveal that teacher-made examinationaffected the domains of teaching-learning process negatively. This means it affects students’ learning attitudes, motivations, and readiness in leaning some components of the materials, and experience in taking examination, practice in using the learning materials and methods in general. Some components of the course, such as writing and listening, were not included in the final examination of the course. As a result, students were influenced to give more time for the work of previous examination questions rather than studying the materials. Based on the findings of the study, teachers are recommended to set examination questions from the contents of the materials they used to teach the components of the course and give equal emphasis for all the components of the language during teaching-learning process and assessment. As the committee members usually set the examinations, the teaching material choice should be amended to align the contents of the examination questions with the contents in the teaching materials

Literature of the New Year: Literary Variations on the Celebration of the New Year
Is the New Year really new or old? Happy or sad? Is it only part of the process and the cycle of seasons making one look back and think of death? Is it a time to wish to stay where one is or hope for opportunities and possibilities? Like a point in a circle, is every day a New Year’s day? Is it a time for nostalgia and reminiscence or promises and resolutions for the future? With the (Gregorian and the British Government) changes in the Western calendar at different times in history and with different countries/cultures celebrating the New Year at different times of the year and with the fiscal year, political (election) year, and academic year being different from the traditional New Year of January 1st, does the New Year mark the beginning and the ending in just an arbitrary way? Centuries ago Britain’s earliest Poets Laureate introduced the tradition of writing a New Year poem. Since then there have been many authors writing New Year essays and poems. They include Robert Herrick, Charles Cotton, Johann Von Goethe, S. T. Coleridge, Charles Lamb, Lord Alfred Tennyson, William Cullen Bryant, Helen Hunt Jackson, Emily Dickinson, George Curtis, Thomas Hardy, Fiona Macleod (William Sharp), D. H. Lawrence, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sylvia Plath, among others
Godan, The Film: What it Replicates and What it Hides
The present research paper compares the novel Godan by Munshi Premchand written in 1936 in pre independence era and the film directed by Trilok Jetly in 1962 in post independence era. It simply underlines the scene, plot, persons and events etc. the cinema replicates or hides.
Literature and cinema seems to have one similar motif or seems to work on the similar ground that is to reflect society. Literature doesn’t lie but “not mentioning something” or “saying it in different way” also ruins history. Generally we consider literature as a piece of history and what is written in it, we take it as a reality or truth. And if this literature dosent mentions anything we don’t think it ever exit or nothing worthy of considering. But is this the only truth? isn’t there not a world beyond literature? There is a very big scenario outside the frame of literature, which the so called literary persons forget to mention. About the cinema also we have the same formation, we think that what it shows reflects reality or is strongly influenced by the reality. And cinema has one big advantage of reaching out to the largest amount of people. It has the tremendous amount of audience compared to literature. It can influence people in a great amount
