Creatures and Clans: The Symbolic Significance of Animal Imagery in Jacob\u27s Blessings and Beyond
This article delves into the symbolic significance of animals in the blessings of Jacob, particularly focusing on Genesis 49:1-28. It explores the nuanced portrayal of various animals and their characteristics, shedding light on the author’s keen observation of nature and its integration into the biblical narrative. Drawing on scholarly insights and biblical commentary, the article analyzes the use of animal metaphors to delineate the distinctive traits of each tribe as described in Jacob’s blessings. Through a comparative study of zoological characteristics and biblical symbolism, the article elucidates the deeper meanings embedded within these blessings and their relevance to understanding the socio-cultural context of ancient Israel. While the paper primarily centres on the Hebrew Bible, a comparative discussion will be briefly included to explore how similar imagery is utilized in other sacred texts such as the Book of Sirach and the Christian New Testament, thus providing a broader literary and theological context.[1] By examining the interactions between humans and animals within the biblical text, the article offers valuable insights into the rich tapestry of imagery employed by biblical authors to convey moral, social, and theological messages.
[1] While the primary focus of this paper is the use of animal imagery within Genesis 49, it is worth briefly exploring how this symbolism is echoed and reinterpreted in other sacred texts. For instance, in the Book of Sirach, which, while outside the Hebrew Bible canon, uses animal imagery to express wisdom and moral teachings. Similarly, the lion metaphor appears in the Christian New Testament, particularly in Revelation, where the “Lion of the tribe of Judah” is explicitly linked to the messianic figure of Jesus. These references, though situated within different religious traditions, reflect the enduring power of the lion symbol as a representation of divine authority and kingship. However, it is crucial to understand these interpretations as later developments that build upon, but are distinct from, the original context of Genesis 49
Representation Theory And Its Applications In Physics
Representation theory, which encodes the elements of a group as linear operators on a vector space, has far-reaching implications in physics. Fundamental results in quantum physics emerge directly from the representations describing physical symmetries. We first examine the connections between specific representations and the principles of quantum mechanics. Then, we shift our focus to the braid group, which describes the algebraic structure of braids. We apply representations of the braid group to physical systems in order to investigate quasiparticles known as anyons. Finally, we obtain governing equations of anyonic systems to highlight the differences between braiding statistics and conventional Bose-Einstein/Fermi-Dirac statistics
The Effect Of Atomic Oxygen On Additively Manufactured Materials
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a rapidly developing manufacturing method utilized in fields such as the aerospace industry. In-space AM is a technology of interest for the future of spaceflight, including on-orbit manufacturing. However, AM materials are subject to defects that may impact their performance in space-based applications. How these defects change the material’s reaction to the space environment, specifically atomic oxygen (AO), has only recently been explored. AO is a highly corrosive, dominant constituent in low Earth orbit that causes continuous erosion of spacecraft surfaces. The effect of AO on various AM materials is investigated in this thesis. Stainless steel, aluminum, ULTEM™, and titanium samples made using differing AM techniques were exposed to 24 hours of AO in order to calculate material susceptibility in the form of erosion yield. Additionally, reflectance spectra were collected to detect changes in material at the surface. Over 24 hours, samples were exposed to an average fluence of 9.10 × 1020 atoms cm−2, equating to about 200 times the naturally occurring AO flux at International Space Station altitudes. The statistical significance of effects from AO exposure were determined. Comparisons were drawn between the AM materials tested and conventionally manufactured materials. It was found that mass loss due to AO erosion was significant for ULTEM™, powder bed fusion titanium, and directed energy deposition titanium. The ULTEM™ tested in this thesis had significantly higher erosion yield when compared to ULTEM™ tested by NASA, while all other material comparisons had insufficient evidence to draw similar conclusions. Reflectance spectra did not reveal unexpected differences before and after exposure
Sequential Memory Generation For Cognitive Models
Understanding the process of memory formation in neural systems is of great interest in the field of neuroscience. Valiant’s Neuroidal Model poses a plausible theory for how memories are created within a computational context. Previously, the algorithm JOIN has been used to show how the brain could perform conjunctive and disjunctive coding to store memories. A limitation of JOIN is that it does not consider the coding of temporal information in a meaningful manner. We propose SeqMem, a similar algorithmic primitive that is designed to encode a series of items within a random graph model. We investigate the feasibility of SeqMem empirically by observing its stability and effects on capacity in our model. We intend to provide value in the use of SeqMem and similar procedures to further develop a neurobiologically plausible theory of mind. Our goal here is to inspire further work in scaling our methods to function at a human-level magnitude of computation

The project involved developing lessons to be taught in humanities courses. Determining the impact of teaching agricultural content in the courses was included as a part of the project
Exploring the Effect of Interactivity on Zoom Fatigue and Student Learning
The present study aims to address the immensely popular alternative to face-to-face classrooms in higher education that has emerged in videoconferencing, and the various challenges that it creates for students in comfort, enjoyment, and learning. While many cross-sectional studies have explored the evidence of and causes for this so-called “Zoom fatigue” (e.g., Aroaz et al., 2023; Castro & Tumibay, 2021; Fauville et al., 2021a; 2021b; Reidl, 2022), experiments testing potential alleviating factors to this fatigue are limited. The study used experimental design to evaluate the effect of interactivity in Zoom class sessions on the students’ perceived learning, Zoom fatigue, and material retention mediated by social presence and engagement. Surveys were developed by the researcher and sent to Communication Studies students participating in the study at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo both preceding and then following manipulated Zoom lessons. Significant results of the study include that students who reported higher levels of Zoom Features interactivity performed better on material retention quizzes, social presence mediated the relationship between interactivity and Zoom fatigue, and social presence significantly mediated the relationship between Zoom fatigue and perceived student learning. This study provided direction for future study of potential factors to mitigate Zoom fatigue and increase learning in online classrooms
Advancing Embedded IoT Architectures for Space and Terrestrial Applications
Radio transceivers play a pivotal role in establishing communication networks, particularly in regions where existing infrastructures are unstable or compromised due to natural disasters or conflicts. By utilizing LoRa (Long Range) communication technology, OWL Integrations develops radio transceivers to establish mesh networks to communicate with one another during disasters. This project team continues development of a second generation OWL board, classified as Quacker Advanced Development (QuAD), with a focus on transitioning to a new microcontroller and integrating GNSS libraries and drivers. An ulterior objective involved R&D for a space application of the board
Modifications For Improved Bandwidth For On-Chip Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy
ELECTROCHEMICAL IMPEDANCE SPECTROSCOPY (EIS) provides a method for collecting the electrical frequency dependent characteristics of biological materials. The Biomedical Microsystems Lab has developed a 16-channel cell culture with inte- grated electrode arrays for characterizing the electrical impedance of cells. Previous work has condensed the EIS technology to accompany the multichannel cell culture onto a Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) to replace a high-cost physical relay multiplexer (MUX) and impedance analyzer system with a low-cost solid-state analog MUX and Analog Discovery 2 (AD2). In this paper, the current PCBA and MUX are compared to system improvements, decreasing measurement error by 0.3-0.5% around 100Hz and 25-28% around 1MHz. The main change replaces the 16-channel MUX with four 4-channel MUX’s. The integrated circuit (IC) replacement decreases exces- sive gain contributed by the PCBA, extends the bandwidth of the original system, and flattens the frequency response around 1MHz. Each board revision is compared to justify variations made to the system accuracy. The resulting measurement data and EIS PCB gain characteristics can be applied in the future to improve cell growth quantification
Shuffled Faster Than Nyquist Signaling For Spectrally Efficient And Secure Wireless Communication
This thesis investigates the implementation and performance of Shuffled Faster than Nyquist (SFTN) signaling, a communication method that enhances spectral efficiency and provides physical layer security (PLS) in wireless communications. In Faster than Nyquist signaling, the Nyquist inter-symbol interference (ISI) criterion is exceeded, thereby increasing spectral efficiency. By varying the transmission rate of symbols above the Nyquist rate, SFTN signaling is able to obfuscate the timing of transmitted symbols with ISI. The work in this thesis evaluates the performance of SFTN in Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels and the MATLAB 802.11ax fading channels. Results show that while SFTN signaling offers the ability to introduce PLS, the sensitivity of the waveform is significantly influenced by the choice of symbol transmission rates and channel conditions
