Pedagogy of the Taboo as Feminist Pedagogy: Embracing an Invitational Rhetoric Orientation

    Get PDF
Within this essay, I highlight a pedagogy of the taboo (Orbe, 2018) as a productive framework to counter anti-DEIA attempts to silence diverse voices in our class rooms and across campus. As an extension of Paulo Freire’s (1990) pioneering work, this orientation to critical pedagogy promotes teaching←→learning that questions authoritative meaning-making as a means to empowerment, liberation, and social justice. Central to this framework is a belief that labeling particular topics (e.g., race and racism; sex, gender, sexuality, sexism) as off-limits constitutes a rhetorical device used by those in power to maintain the status quo which benefits them (Orbe, 2018)

Developing an Ethical Trauma-Informed Pilot Process for the Inclusion of Physical Violence in Visual Rhetoric Instruction

    Get PDF
Interpersonal, gun-related, and other types of physical violence are all too common experiences for students. This critical commentary centers on the introduction of an expansive view of visual rhetoric, including the visible signs of physical violence, in an undergraduate writing class. This serves as a way of exploring broad notions of communication and physical violence as suasive in some contexts. An examination of the visible symbols of physical force is provided with trauma-informed methods

Type Qualifiers as Catalysts for Language Evolution

    Get PDF
Mainstream programming languages continually evolve to make correct and perfor- mant programs authored in the language easier to write. Successful new languages often succeed by improving on these qualities over existing languages that have not evolved fast enough. Many improvements derive from research in Static Analysis, but there is often a significant lag between the research and features becoming available in mainstream languages. This thesis focuses on the theory of type qualifiers as a possible means of accelerating the adoption of research results into common usage. Type Qualifiers have a two-decade lineage of static analysis tools, with active research today, but are not yet available in a major programming language. This thesis discusses some of the adoption barriers novel language features face, with a particular focus on barriers stemming from how these tools integrate into a host language. We then explore type qualifiers, the tools built on top of them, and why they may not have seen greater adoption. Finally, we examine some modern attempts to transfer features from one language to another, and how these attempts could be facilitated by type qualifiers. We posit that this form of transference is a valuable pathway for feature adoption, and that type qualifiers could, paired with a set of other language features, unlock this potential. We hope this discussion might inspire work to finally make Type Qualifiers available to the masses as a high-value mechanism for language evolution

Literature Review: New Life K9s Informational Video

    Get PDF
New Life K9s is an organization that seeks to unite service dogs with veterans and first responders who are suffering from PTSD and other effects of their heroic work. The organization is seeking a concise informational video that highlights their work and explains their organization to potential donors and the general public. My senior project’s goal is to create this video in a way that accurately showcases the work of New Life K9s and conveys the value of their work. I will be using footage that the organization provides and will incorporate techniques of video editing, color correction, audio editing, sound design, motion graphics, and other visual media practices. In order to ensure that my project completes its objectives, my success criteria will include a finished, professional video that is under 20 minutes and correctly addresses each aspect of the New Life K9s organization that they have asked me to convey

    Opollo: Connect Through Sound

    Get PDF
Connect Through Sound: For my senior project, I created Opollo, an app that unites music creatives worldwide to share, create, learn, and collaborate. This project focuses on building a strong brand identity, an intuitive design system, and a fully interactive prototype. Opollo bridges the gap between music creation and social interaction, providing a space where musicians of all levels can connect and innovate through remixing, producing, and live jamming. The design process began with brainstorming key features, followed by low-fidelity wireframes to map out the app’s structure. These evolved into mid- and high-fidelity designs, refining visuals, interactions, and user flow. User testing played a crucial role in shaping the experience, ensuring seamless navigation and real-time collaboration. The final Figma prototype showcases an engaging and intuitive platform tailored for music creators. Opollo’s deliverables include a brand identity, an interactive app prototype, and a refined design system. By prioritizing accessibility and usability, this project shows the power of digital collaboration in music. Opollo is more than a tool, it’s a creative hub where musicians can connect, create, and inspire each other

From Digital to Print: Investigating Ink and Paper Combinations in Photographic Printing

    Get PDF
The significance of this project lies in its potential to deepen the understanding of how paper choice influences color reproduction in printed photographic works. As digital photography continues to advance, the demand for high-quality physical prints remains strong, requiring photographers and designers to carefully consider how materials impact the final image. This research provides valuable insights into how different paper substrates—specifically silk text stock and satin text stock—affect color accuracy, vibrancy, and tonal subtleties when printed using a standardized color management workflow. By highlighting the interaction between printer limitations and paper characteristics, this project helps photographers and print professionals make informed decisions when selecting materials for photo books, fine art prints, and other high-quality printed works. The findings underscore the importance of understanding how print media can enhance or alter an image’s intended look, reinforcing the need for strategic material choices in professional print production. As a photo minor, I have developed technical expertise in color theory, composition, and visual storytelling. This project allows me to apply these skills in a practical setting, bridging the gap between my knowledge of digital photography and the physical aspects of print production. By testing and documenting the impact of paper finishes on color reproduction, I am expanding my understanding of how different materials contribute to the final presentation of an image. This hands-on experience not only strengthens my ability to produce high-quality prints but also provides a valuable resource for other photographers and designers striving for true-to-life color fidelity in their work
