    Constructing a High-Performance IoT Pipeline for Smart Manufacturing Environments

    The Fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0, integrates a range of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, and Data Analytics to improve the efficiency, productivity, scalability, and security of modern manufacturing systems. Smart manufacturing leverages these technologies across various domains to enhance data-driven decision-making and quality control in production processes. In a smart manufacturing environment, heterogeneous IoT sensors interact with each other and control systems to automate real-time monitoring, analysis, and decision-making. This integration enables manufacturers to optimize production, quickly detect and address anomalies, reduce environmental impact, and adapt rapidly to changing conditions. Given the reliance on IoT sensors and the traffic they generate, smart manufacturing environments require a scalable and efficient IoT pipeline capable of ingesting, processing, and analyzing large volumes of sensor data in real time. This project aims to develop an automated IoT pipeline for modern smart manufacturing, ensuring low latency and strong fault tolerance when processing data from diverse sensors. The pipeline will utilize cutting-edge IoT technologies, including Apache Kafka and Apache Spark, to manage and process the sensor data effectively

    How Does User Control Reduce Irritation of Mid-Roll Ads

    Large video platforms like YouTube and Twitch rely extensively on advertising for revenue. Often, they deploy mid-roll advertising: ads that play in the middle of video content, interrupting it. Such interruptions can irritate consumers significantly. This project primarily involves conducting user testing of an already-developed YouTube browser extension that that gives users some control over when mid-roll ads play. We hope to ascertain how effectively the design mitigates user irritation from mid-roll ads. Tasks will involve recruiting people into a laboratory setting where they will use the browser extension, interviewing them about their experience, and manually extracting themes from the interview data. Good people and socialization skills required. As a stretch goal, the student will create a webpage with video player functionality that matches the web extension’s functionality, enabling larger-scale user evaluation

    Analyzing Wearable Sensor Data from Individuals undergoing Motor and Neurological Rehabilitation

    An ongoing study funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) is focused on developing computational models of rehabilitation for people post-stroke. Stroke affects around 800,000 people per year in the US, and often leaves people with limited motor (movement) and neurological (brain-based) capability. Wearable sensors may allow clinicians to better understand how these individuals recover, and to better design therapies and interventions. We are seeking students who can use existing software, and perhaps adapt the software to extract, analyze, and visualize detail from study participants. This project will involve with the Cal Poly PI, and collaborators from physical therapy. This project will involve coding, signal processing, machine learning, and human-subjects research methodologies

    Towards Automated and Explainable Insider Threat Response in Electronic Health Records: A Role-Aware Machine Learning Framework

    Healthcare remains a prime target for cyberattacks, with insider misuse and credential compromise posing major risks to Electronic Health Records (EHRs). This thesis introduces a role-aware, explainable anomaly detection and response framework integrated with OpenEMR to address post-authentication threats. Four models—Local Outlier Factor (LOF), Isolation Forest, Autoencoder, and Graph Neural Network (GNN)—detect behavioral deviations across temporal, device, and role-based features, with LOF serving as the primary runtime detector. A configurable policy engine maps anomaly severity to proportional actions, from email alerts to read-only restrictions or account suspension, all reversible and auditable. Evaluation on real EHR logs shows the system’s operational viability, balancing security automation with clinical continuity. The framework supports HIPAA, CCPA, and GDPR requirements while demonstrating that healthcare security can be both explainable and adaptive. It lays the groundwork for future multi-source anomaly detection and patient-safe cybersecurity automation in healthcare

    Flower Color Variation and its Maintenance: Experimental Ecology of Serpentine-Adapted Leptosiphon parviflorus Benth. (Polemoniaceae)

    Environmental heterogeneity can impose fluctuating selection pressures on species across space and time. If variations of a trait provide fitness benefits in certain environmental conditions but not others, these fitness tradeoffs under fluctuating selection could be a means of maintaining intraspecific variation. A common type of intraspecific variation is the production of anthocyanins, pigments responsible for red, pink, and blue colors in plants and that can also provide protection from abiotic stressors, such as water limitation and heavy metals. Leptosiphon parviflorus Benth. (Polemoniaceae, variable linanthus) is an annual wildflower whose individuals produce either pink or white flowers, and both flower color morphs often co-occur within populations. To assess potential fitness differences under a combination of abiotic stressors, pink- and white-flowered morphs from a population originating on serpentine soil were subjected to a 2 × 2 factorial greenhouse experiment of high and low magnesium and benign and limited watering conditions. Fitness was measured and modeled in terms of germination, survival to flowering, flower count, and lifetime fitness. Pink- and white-flowered morphs did not differ in probability of germinating nor in survival to flowering, regardless of magnesium conditions. White-flowered morphs had greater flower production than pink-flowered morphs overall. White-flowered morphs also had greater lifetime fitness under all treatments compared to pink-flowered morphs, suggesting a cost to floral anthocyanin production. The absence of observed fitness tradeoffs suggests that other stressors, such as nutrient limitation, heavy metal stress, or other combinations with water and magnesium stress, may be responsible for maintaining this flower color polymorphism

    Reviving Motion: Rebranding More Than Motion Dance Intensive

    For my senior project, I will lead a full rebranding initiative for More Than Motion Dance Intensive, an international dance convention that occurs annually across the US and other countries, connecting dancers and professional choreographers through a transformative weekend of dance. The main goal of this project is to turn the company’s outdated Wix website into an innovative site with a brand new visual identity. Additionally, the original site’s accessibility is lacking in terms of layout orientation and marketing strategy as it doesn’t convey the modern, dynamic feel the intensive is meant to embody. My goal is to complement the website redesign with an email outreach campaign using XMPie technology to create personalized graphics that include More Than Motion’s logo, professional photography, and target specific dance studios in various US regions. This form of outreach is intended to target new consumers, both dancers and dance studios, with the hope of gaining prospective attendees and participants for More Than Motion’s future event offerings

    Decolonizing Monopoly: Intersectionality, Abolition, and Fun

    “Abolitionist teaching is not sustainable without joy” (Love 2019: 120). We propose a joyful classroom activity that recreates the game “Monopoly” to bring to the forefront the lived experiences of people in late racial capitalism. This re-creation is an exercise in which undergraduate students rewrite both the characters to represent intersectional identities in the United States and the chance cards to represent the contemporary context. Students then play the game with these characters and end with a reflection on the lesson. In this way students are able to exercise prior course learning on identity, privilege, inequality, intersectionality, social stratification, organizing, solidarity, and political power

    Walking the Walk: Centering Praxis in Teaching Abolition

    Teaching abolition in the university setting from a theoretical standpoint often leaves students feeling disconnected from its real-world implications and does not connect or empower students to join this work. Bettina Love argues that “too often we think the work of fighting oppression is just intellectual. The real work is personal, emotional, spiritual, and communal.” As an assistant professor of African American Studies and an abolitionist feminist, who centers praxis in my pedagogy, my involvement in abolition organizing on campus is the real work that Love asks of educators. I organize with a small group of students and professors to advocate for defunding and demilitarizing university police and investing more in supportive services as a pathway to abolition. Patricia Hill Collins asserts that to know Black feminism requires personal accountability and responsibility (1989). Honoring Collins, I’m actively committed to fighting for change in real time. Aligned with Love and Collins, I share my commitment to praxis as a transformative way to teach abolition: providing students a hands-on, exploratory education that connects them to real abolition work on the ground and invites their engaged participation in such work. The late bell hooks widely advocated for educators to move beyond theory and radically embody their politics. As a professor who is actively engaged in abolition, teaching abolition in my classes goes beyond theory; its being role-modeled and is both a practice of freedom (hooks 1994), and a pedagogic process of learning to advocate for freedom. Crucially, in teaching from praxis, students learn not only why to get involved, but how to get involved in abolition work. In alignment with feminist teaching, overcoming oppression is a central purpose (Shrewsbury, 1987.) In this article, I detail my involvement in abolition organizing on campus and explain how I embed this work into my pedagogy and conclude with sharing an example of a former student, who as result of class, joined this movement and actively participates in this liberation work

    Be Like Water : Practicing Abolition on the Ground

    This Social Justice Strategy asks students to immerse themselves in abolitionist waters by learning abolitionist perspectives, strategies, and practices from a local abolitionist, transformative justice, or mutual aid organization while providing them a service or fulfilling one or more of their needs. This is a self-paced, term-long project scaffolded by abolitionist histories and best practices for working in community. The instructor uses a student survey as a basis for forming groups and matching them up with local organizations, then students create plans for working together, including how to address conflict restoratively. Groups research their organizations and collaborate with them to determine how best to serve their needs, documenting their work as they go and presenting it at the end of the course. Takeaways include the importance of adaptability and creativity, increased knowledge of the security state, hands-on experience with redistributing resources, and understanding that there are many ways to show up to the work including and beyond direct action. This SJS derives from a course co-created by a professor and an undergraduate to engage students in the everyday practices of abolition, transformative justice, and mutual aid
