    The Effect of Dietary Strawberry Supplementation on Glycemic Control Factors in Overweight and Obese Postmenopausal Women with At-Risk Diabetes Mellitus Pathogenesis

    Glycemic control is directly related to type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). As of 2023, 30.5 million Americans have T2DM, and this number only continues to increase exponentially across the world (“Facts & Figures,” n.d.). T2DM is only a precursor to fatal conditions including cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death in the United States. Extensive research has revealed that strawberries, a high polyphenolic food, may pose positive effects on glycemic control biomarkers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of three servings of strawberries in the form of 39-g of freeze-dried strawberry powder (FDSP) for six weeks on glycemic biomarkers in overweight or obese postmenopausal women. The study analyzed the following biomarkers, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, fasting insulin, fasting glucose, adiponectin, TNF-a, IL-1b, and IL-6. Additionally, dietary intake and physical activity were analyzed for interactions with the outcome. The present study was a 16-18 week free-living, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover trial that began in February 2019 and ended in January 2023. Participants were assigned to one of two dietary patterns, FDSP–Placebo or Placebo–FDSP, where they underwent two dietary interventions for six weeks each with a washout period of 2-3 weeks, before and after the first intervention. To limit confounding factors participants were instructed to high polyphenolic foods outline in a handout. A statistical analysis revealed no significant improvements in analyzed biomarkers although insignificant improvements were found in HbA1c, HOMA-IR, fasting glucose, and fasting insulin. No significant changes were revealed for inflammatory glycemic control biomarkers. The present study provides valuable information on the effect of strawberries on glycemic control on postmenopausal women although further research is necessary to find significance and make accurate claims

    We discuss how we put feminist pedagogies into action while developing a collaborative research and writing project about Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879-1961). We also explore how our collaborative research project influenced the development of a happy, fruitful, and long-lasting research partnership that broadens the conversation about incorporating feminist teaching practices into higher education. Burroughs set students on ways to find their own pathways, affecting change in ways they found most important. We engaged in our project with similar commitments

    Skip the Grid: An Impactful Solar Installation Project in the Navajo Nation

    Over the past four years, a team of interdisciplinary students and faculty from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), Heart of America, and generous industry sponsors (SOLV, Goal Zero, NextTracker, Elite, and TCB Builders) have brought their time, effort, and resources together to complete a service trip, called Skip the Grid. The trip’s primary goal is to provide a reliable source of power, light, and refrigeration to families with school age children in the Navajo Nation where these resources are absent or unreliable otherwise. This year’s trip took place over Cal Poly’s academic break from March 23rd to 27th, 2025 throughout the greater Chinle, Arizona location. The project team, consisting of 20 Cal Poly students, faculty, industry sponsors, and HOA trip directors, gathered in Northwest Arizona from various fields, backgrounds, and locations for a week of solar installations. By the end of three installation days and a handful of community engagement events, the team brought power to a total of 40 homes, interacted with a great number of Navajo families, taught hundreds of elementary school students the impact of solar, and collectively learned a great deal from Navajo life and culture

    Students\u27 Evaluations of Construction Management Curriculum Through a Senior Exit Interview

    This project explored student perspectives on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Construction Management program through a two-phase approach: individual interviews and a large group review session. Ten students with varied career goals and levels of involvement in the program were interviewed to understand their views on curriculum quality, industry engagement, extracurricular opportunities, and departmental support. The goal was to identify patterns in feedback across diverse student experiences. Following the interviews, a refined set of questions was developed and presented to a larger group of students in a structured discussion forum. This session provided further insights into both strengths and areas for improvement within the program. Key findings revealed that while students generally praised industry involvement, internships, and extracurricular offerings, there were mixed reviews on the effectiveness of specific courses and their delivery formats. The results highlight the importance of course sequencing, instructional quality, and the value of hands-on learning experiences. The project ultimately aims to inform departmental efforts to better align curriculum and programming with student needs and expectations, ensuring continued relevance and effectiveness in preparing students for the construction industry

    California Polytechnic Design-Build Lab Course

    This paper explores the development and execution of a project-based Design-Build (DB) course implemented at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The course aimed to replicate real-world DB processes in a controlled academic setting, engaging Construction Management and Architecture students in simulated but immersive industry experience. From Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to Final Presentation and Closeout, the course mirrors a typical DB project lifecycle. Through collaborative exercises, students gained exposure to roles and responsibilities, submittals, cost estimating, procurement strategies, risk analysis, virtual coordination, stakeholder communication, and more. This paper describes how a sequence of weekly assignments was structured to teach essential concepts of DB delivery, and how students managed evolving responsibilities while facing simulated field challenges. Ultimately, this course reinforced practical construction and design skills, while fostering interdisciplinary teamwork and preparing students for real-world DB project delivery

    Building a Sustainable Home on the Central Coast: An Owner’s Perspective

    As awareness and technology increase, sustainability as a focus in home construction is also increasing. This case study based research project seeks to understand the process of building a home on California’s Central Coast with sustainability in mind. An interview was conducted with an owner who built their home in Templeton in 2019. The interview was in a semi-structured format which included specific qualitative questions but mostly focused on an open-ended discussion which allowed the owner to share their own experience. The key challenges learned from this interview were that the owner believed price to be the main factor that limited further sustainability goals and that lack of construction knowledge created frustration. However, passive solar techniques and a high-performance building envelope allowed them to minimize heating and cooling costs. The effort by the builder to nurture a relationship with the owner was also stated as a major driver to success and satisfaction with the process. This project can serve as a reference for both owners looking to build their own home someday, and builders looking to improve their understanding of what their clients are looking for in the homebuilding experience
