    Researching the Impact of Cal Poly Classes on Computing Students Perceptions of Computer Ethics and Social Responsibility

    The importance and impact of socio-technical systems are playing an increasing role in the education of computing students. Discussion of ethics and social responsibility has always been a tenant of computer science education; however, research has shown engineering and computer science students lose focus on these values over their engineering education. Cal Poly computing departments have taken steps to emphasize social responsibility and ethics through required and suggested courses. This project focuses on examining the values and beliefs of Cal Poly computing students, who were surveyed over Winter and Spring Quarters in 2022. This project is inspired by Dr. Cech’s work around disengagement in engineering education and her methods were used in this work to determine if Cal Poly computing students are disengaging from beliefs relating to social welfare and responsibly. The results of the survey of 71 Cal Poly computing students showed that overall Cal Poly students view beliefs relating to ethical and social responsibility as more important than engineering students from past research. Students perceived that the department viewed ethical and social issues as important, as well as their own personal views. It was found that students’ public welfare beliefs were higher farther along in their degree and students who had taken relevant classes also demonstrated higher public welfare beliefs. Demographic analysis did not reveal any relationship when studying students’ more general values outside of the engineering profession. This project demonstrates that the efforts the Cal Poly computing departments took have had a positive impact on student values. This work highlights how an intentional curriculum can have positive effects as well as discussing future areas of improvement

    Examining Introductory Computer Science Student Cognition When Testing Software Under Different Test Adequacy Criteria

    The ability to test software is invaluable in all areas of computer science, but it is often neglected in computer science curricula. Test adequacy criteria (TAC), tools that measure the effectiveness of a test suite, have been used as aids to improve software testing teaching practices, but little is known about how students respond to them. Studies have examined the cognitive processes of students programming and professional developers writing tests, but none have investigated how student testers test with TAC. If we are to improve how they are used in the classroom, we must start by understanding the different ways that they affect students’ thought processes as they write tests. In this thesis, we take a grounded theory approach to reveal the underlying cognitive processes that students utilize as they test under no feedback, condition coverage, and mutation analysis. We recorded 12 students as they thought aloud while creating test suites under these feedback mechanisms, and then we analyzed these recordings to identify the thought processes they used. We present our findings in the form of the phenomena we identified, which can be further investigated to shed more light on how different TAC affect students as they write tests.

    Hiinga Hospital Project - Uganda, Africa

    This paper outlines the role of a construction management student in the interdisciplinary development of an urgent care clinic and hospital in Kampala, Uganda. This interdisciplinary team was composed of five students all belonging to the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The team was tasked by Hiinga Inc., a capital investment company, to provide a preliminary design and construction resources to aid with development of these facilities. Two construction management students worked on this project at different stages. The first student was tasked with constructability research and a preliminary estimate and schedule for both the urgent care clinic and hospital. The second student, whose role is highlighted in this paper, was responsible for providing a detailed quantity takeoff, cost estimate, and schedule for the urgent care clinic. This paper will outline the team\u27s development process in addition to these deliverables

    Comparison Between Shipping Container Homes and Regular Stick-built Homes in California

    The Research that was conducted was to examine the differences and similarities between shipping container construction and stick-built construction within residential homes in California. Shipping Container construction has grown in popularity and has continued to make its way into many different construction industries. I wanted to find the reasoning behind why this has continued to grow and if it could be a future way to construct Californian homes. This information could change how future homebuilders construct homes in California. This information could also provide a home that has a different cost, schedule, and features that could benefit the owner. After conducting my research I have found that shipping container homes do not have the potential at this point in time to replace stick built homes in California. Shipping container homes provide a simple design, affordability, a short construction schedule, and the ability to be relocated easily. While these benefits apply to smaller simple homes and ADUs when constructing mid-size to large custom homes the affordability, schedule, and flexibility of design are diminished when constructing with shipping containers. Shipping container construction has a niche for the future of construction although, it will not overcome stick-built construction in typical Californian home building

    Has the philosophical case for animal liberation been proved? A systematic and narrative review of the philosophical literature 1975-2020.

    I test the hypothesis proposed by Peter Singer that the philosophical case for animal liberation has been won, through a systematic review of papers published by philosophers between 1975 and 2020. There was a slight but statistically significant correlation between support for an animal liberation vegan position, with year of publication. Support for a better treatment of animals than currently sanctioned by society increased significantly among papers discussing general principals of animal ethics. Findings support a weaker version of Singer\u27s hypothesis. Among the philosophical community there is greater support for animal liberation, but the debate has not been ‘won’

    CVAF: Service Dog Kennel Construction

    The California Veterans Assistance Foundation Service Dog Kennel Construction project gave back to our country’s veterans by constructing new kennels for their service dogs. The previous kennel on the veteran residential site needed an upgrade due to the increased number of service dogs at the shelter. A team of two Cal Poly Construction Management students consisting of Spencer Allen and Luke Terrio worked to design, estimate, coordinate, and construct a new kennel structure for the site. The roles were divided in the project between the preconstruction and construction phases. During pre-construction Spencer’s role was to schedule the job and create the necessary drawings to complete the structure, while Luke’s role was to estimate the project and reach out to local businesses to fund and provide materials. The construction process was a joint effort between both students that consisted of grading the site, cutting and staking formwork, setting fence posts, mixing and pouring concrete, and installing the chain link fencing. The project was successful in overcoming challenges during each phase such as communicating an effective design, organizing material procurement, and working around conflicting schedules. The new kennel will provide a secure place for service dogs to live for years to come

    Gauging Student Interest in a LEED GA Exam Preparation Technical Elective Course

    Being a LEED Green Associate (LEED GA) demonstrates a fundamental understanding of sustainable building principles and practices. Since green building is at the forefront of construction, there is no better way for Construction Management students to enter the industry prepared in this area than by taking the LEED General Associate exam. This paper is a case study that obtains students’ perspectives on implementing a new Construction Management technical elective course that will prepare students to successfully take and pass the LEED GA exam. A survey was conducted to gauge student familiarity with sustainability, as well as their interest in earning their LEED GA accreditation. This paper presents and discusses the results of these student surveys. Results provided insight into students’ current knowledge of sustainability and their level of desire to learn more on this topic. Results also indicated students’ preferences regarding course format and test-taking strategies. This paper aims to provide information and guidance that will allow educators to improve student education and credibility in sustainability and the built environment. This paper serves as research that can be used in reference when potentially implementing this new technical elective course
