Peer Reference and the Out-of-the-Building Experience
Purpose – This article conceptualizes essential keys to the future of peer reference in academic libraries as extrapolated through the dual lenses of academic library history in the United States of America and recent experiences of a peer program with prospective and actual out-of-the-building experiences.
Design/methodology/approach – A 30,000-foot historical view of the dispositions of space in academic library buildings, collections, spaces, technology and reference provision is integrated with a description of the responses and insights of a peer reference program during the program’s prospective and actual out-of-the-building experiences. These components are then analyzed to extrapolate keys to peer reference provision in any learning environment.
Findings – Peer reference is a natural extension of the Learning Commons model as developed in many academic libraries. To find optimal success in leveraging the benefits of peer-to-peer learning, program coordinators should keep in mind the social aspects of peer learning and intentionally articulate a framework for service delivery that best matches the modalities of providers, patrons and the information environment. In reviewing training and service practices, coordinators should be particularly on guard for any bias due to traditional reliance on the affordances of a library building and/or physical service point.
Originality/value – This article founds its conclusions in regard to the future of peer reference by contextualizing the evolution and future of such programs in the wider historical context of academic library dispositions of space in support of learning. It proposes a conceptual framework for intentionally matching the modalities of providers, patrons and the information environment

Evaluating and Improving Domain-Specific Programming Education: A Case Study with Cal Poly Chemistry Courses
Programming is a key skill in many domains outside computer science. When used judiciously, programming can empower people to accomplish what might be impossible or difficult with traditional methods. Unfortunately, students, especially non-CS majors, frequently have trouble while learning to program. This work reports on the challenges and opportunities faced by Physical Chemistry (PChem) students at Cal Poly, SLO as they learn to program in MATLAB. We assessed the PChem students through a multiple-choice concept inventory, as well as through “think-aloud” interviews. Additionally, we examined the students’ perceptions of and attitudes towards programming. We found that PChem students are adept at applying programming to a subset of problems, but their knowledge is fragile; like many intro CS students, they struggle to transfer their knowledge to different contexts and often express misconceptions about programming. However, they differ in that the PChem students are first and foremost Chemistry students, and so struggle to recognize appropriate applications of programming without scaffolding. Further, many students do not perceive themselves as competent general- purpose programmers. These factors combine to discourage students from applying programming to novel problems, even though it may be greatly beneficial to them. We leveraged this data to create a workshop with the goal of helping PChem students recognize their programming knowledge as a tool that they can apply to various contexts. This thesis presents a framework for addressing challenges and providing opportunities in domain-specific CS education

Universal Tread for Power Wheelchairs
This project was centered around developing a fully independently driven powered wheelchair attachment that would allow users to traverse non-wheelchair accessible terrain. The initial goal was to create a full-scale model that would allow our user to use and test as a prototype to get over curbs and some light dirt off-roading. However, as the project progressed and limitations of time and money came up, this project was rescoped to a quarter-scale proof of concept model. The goal of this new project was to create a prototype that would carry a scaled-down load and traverse a scaled-down curb. This was to prove if this concept was possible with the proper specifications and loads that would be scaled up to simulate a full-scale model. In changing the scope to a quarter-scale model, the design of the verification prototype was centered around some critical components and dimensions that would be important when scaled up. Some of these specifications included ground clearance, angle of tilt, and some electronics components. We designed and built this verification prototype with parts that we found would best be adapted if they were to be scaled up. These components included things like axles and fasteners that could be easily changed to a different size. Also, all of the electronics were chosen so they could be reused with different specifications. When doing all of the design verification testing, we found that this prototype met most of the specifications we set to meet. The main problem we had was our lack of a reliable tread system, and its trouble with durability and ability to grab onto and climb steps. Our testing shows that this concept is possible at a full-scale model with some slight changes. At full-scale, this prototype would have much more durable treads and space to add additional systems for safety and comfort, like a suspension system
