Fire Protection and Life Safety Analysis of the Adult Education Facility
The objective of this report is to provide an analysis of an existing building’s prescriptive-based and performance-based design methods. The intention is to provide the building owner with a working assessment of the building’s current life safety situation, as well as providing recommendations to improve the overall life safety and property protection of the selected building. This report is developed following the writing style and structure to meet the requirement for the Master of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from California Polytechnic State University. The analysis includes an evaluation of the building owner’s fire and safety program for the selected building known throughout this report as the Adult Education Facility.
The purpose of the Adult Education Facility (AEF) is to serve as an education facility for domestic high school graduates as they matriculate into university placements abroad. The building was considered for analysis based on available site access and the unique occupancy of the region in which it is located. This building was selected due to the multi-function spaces, and the challenges that some unique building features would pose during a fire scenario. This report describes the building site in detail and provides context surrounding the location, use, and history for fire and life safety evaluation.
The Adult Education Facility is approximately 21,600 sq. ft. and its construction is most consistent with Type II-B Construction. The prescriptive-based analysis within this report includes a review of the applicable codes for building height and allowable area, occupancy classification, and fire resistance requirements. The fire sprinkler system and fire detection and alarm systems are analyzed, and egress capacity analysis is performed. The building meets the prescriptive requirements.
A performance-based analysis was performed to determine the performance of the building under the condition of a design fire to demonstrate the strain on the exiting fire protection system, taking into consideration the building’s hazards, population size, building configuration, and egress pathways. A design fire was placed in the east wing corridor that over time has begun to resemble a lounge space rather than the main egress pathway. The tenability criteria of maintaining the smoke layer interface on the Second Floor above 6 ft was analyzed to determine available safe egress time (ASET) using fluid dynamics simulator (FDS) Modeling. The design fire was developed from the energy transfer of the initial fuel package and determining the time for ignition of the second object that contributes to the fuel package. The ASET was determined to be 170 seconds.
The total building occupant load is 1,487 people. The time for total evacuation was calculated for the occupants taking 409 seconds to exit the building providing the required safe egress time (RSET) of 6.81 minutes.
The ASET (3.98 minutes) is less than the RSET (6.81 minutes) for the building and its occupants, meaning it takes longer for the occupants to safely egress from the building than what is available for the population based on the design fire.
Five recommendations were developed to help reduce this disparity. The recommendations include upgrading the notification devices, rating the corridor, enhance the egress capabilities by correcting door swing non-compliances, revising the function of one assembly space and the second floor west stairway egress capacity should be increased to 102 inches based on the occupant load egress distribution hand calculations. The corridor shall be maintained as a sterile space from fuel loads as well as obstructions

Graduate Assistant - Graduate Internship Report
The Graduate Assistant serves as an aid to the Department of Agricultural Education and Communication during the months of January through June. The Graduate Assistant traditionally co-teaches AGED 220: Agricultural Youth Conferences, leads the recruitment efforts to gather judges for the South Coast Region Speaking Finals in King City, co-advises the State FFA Judging Finals Leadership Team, and prepares the California Agricultural Teachers’ Association (CATA) Conference program, amongst many other smaller tasks. Historically, the Graduate Assistant has been an individual of the fall cohort of student teachers, allowing them to be present in this role in the spring; however, the dynamics of the credentialing program have changed and there is no longer a split cohort. Future Graduate Assistants may be students within the Masters of Agricultural Education Program but likely not on the credentialing route. The Graduate Assistant position is a rather rewarding and selfless experience, as you learn to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff within the Department of Agricultural Education and Communication and develop a passion for creating positive, successful events and experiences for FFA members and agriculture educators alike.
One of the tasks of the Graduate Assistant is to produce a Graduate Assistant Binder for succeeding Graduate Assistants to follow as a guide to be successful and stay informed of their duties and responsibilities of their role. I have not yet completed this binder, as my responsibilities conclude at the end of June. However, there are fragments of the binder that have been included in this document to elaborate on the details of various tasks of the Graduate Assistant
AGED 539 Internship Report - Sequoia High School, Merced
This internship report lays out Sequoia HS\u27s current Agriculture program and the direction I am taking it. Included are examples of projects, facility constructs, program goals and student work describing the programs potential and direction. SHS is an alternative education campus in Merced Union High School district and does not have a set FFA or CTSO for students to participate in. My goal is to establish these programs for students to have the same opportunities they would have at a normal High School
Understanding Rare Species in California: An Assessment of Camatta Canyon Amole (Hooveria Purpurea Var. Reducta) and a Meta-Analysis of California Rare Plants in Literature
California is currently in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. There are approximately 5,000 native species of plants in California, a quarter of which are considered rare. Determining threats to these rare plants is often times difficult. Despite California\u27s botanical resources, we still know very little about much of California’s rare plants. San Luis Obispo County is home to 2,000 of California’s native plant taxa, one- third of which are rare or endemic to the county. These species are of great local and environmental concern.
In Chapter 1, we attempted to assess the impact of non native species on a threatened species in eastern San Luis Obispo County. We conducted an invasive thatch removal experiment on 10 vegetation plots of Camatta Canyon Amole, Hooveria purpurea var. reducta. The Camatta Canyon Amole (CCA) is a federally listed “threatened” plant that is only known to occur on 21.15 ha of land on Los Padres National Forest (LPNF). In the 1980s, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established 10 plots to monitor the population of CCA. These biologists recorded a decrease in the CCA since the establishment of those plots in the 1980s. One hypothesis for the decline is the absence of cattle grazing from LPNF, which has resulted in the accumulation of a dense thatch layer. We experimentally removed this thatch layer in five of the 1980s vegetation plots to test this hypothesis. While our the experiment was designed to be a long term treatment, from the first 1.5 years, we found no relationship between thatch removal and the amount of CCA in each plot. The effect of our treatment may take many years to materialize.
In Chapter 2, we conducted extensive botanical surveys of the Camatta Ranch, a 32,000 acre cattle ranch in eastern San Luis Obispo County. The goal of these surveys was to estimate the distribution and population size of CCA on private property, which has never before been accessed or surveyed. We did this in two ways: 1) We created a density ratio estimate based off of plot sampling done on the ranch and 2) we created a species distribution model (SDM) to predict the likelihood of presence throughout the ranch. Our surveys of Camatta Ranch, coupled with our SDM suggest that a majority of CCA’s preferred habitat is on Camatta Ranch, making the ranch of paramount concern for CCA’s protection. Our estimates suggest that 90% of the total population of CCA occurs on Camatta Ranch.
In Chapter 3, we attempted to quantify biases in the literature about California’s flora. The California Floristic Province is one of the most biologically diverse floras in the world. Considerable legal and conservation attention is given to rare plants in California. However, there is no information as to the research effort given to rare species in California. Here we ask the question: Is there more research done on rare plants in California than on non-rare species? To answer this question, we quantified the amount of literature available on Google Scholar for California’s rare plants, weeds, and non-rare natives. To account for the differences in species geographic extent, we aggregated occurrence data for each species from GBIF to determine their ranges. We found that rare species were severely under-represented in the literature, even after accounting for the differences in species extent
