Kamp Krystal Killjoy: Doing Feminism/Making Media
In the current (2025) political climate, just as the United States and the world needs feminism, fewer and fewer people identify as feminists. This article suggests feminist making, as a means for revitalizing feminism for the 21st century. It presents the narrative fiction podcast Kamp Krystal Killjoy as a social justice strategy to meet the challenges of today
The Phoenix Takes Flight: The Importance of Trauma-Informed Positive Education
Since the pandemic, trauma has touched almost everyone. Pervasive illness, death, and isolation affected us in ways we have not paused to process. Many students were young and particularly affected by the pandemic. The rise in mental health concerns has made it more imperative to address mental health within our pedagogy. This article will outline strategies for helping to manage mental health within our pedagogy in order to better help everyone using an approach that aligns with trauma-informed and positive psychology pedagogical practices. Our future is one of compassionate, caring, trauma-informed work that bolsters the well-being of our students
Leaning Pine Arboretum Gazebo
The Leaning Pine Arboretum gazebo provides an aesthetic relaxation space for visitors to the arboretum as well as being a functional structure for faculty as a future event space. This gazebo replaces an existing one, revitalizing the space in conjunction with the arboretum’s planned growth over the coming years. There were many challenges throughout the construction process including permitting issues, design complexities, and coordination with architects and engineers. Persevering through these taught a great deal about project management, the construction industry, and the importance of teamwork. The structure is a total rejuvenation of the prior structure; it is now stronger, larger, and more visually appealing. During my time on the project between August and December of 2024, my team and I completed the pouring of new concrete post footings as well as the installation of the posts, beams, joists, and decking material. This project instilled in me the importance of planning and adhering to a strict schedule to complete projects on time and within budget. The work completed thus far has transformed the aesthetics of the arboretum lawn and the completion of the project will continue to amplify its surroundings
Design and Analysis of Double-Sided Linear Induction Motors using DSLIMs and Ansys Maxwell Computer Software Programs
Electric motors are increasingly used across a wide range of applications, from household appliances to large-scale industrial systems. For specific use cases, manufacturers have begun incorporating linear motors due to their ability to produce direct linear motion. This eliminates the need for mechnical conversion mechanisms such as gears, thereby enhancing overall efficiency and system responsiveness. Given that linear motors are a relatively emerging area within the realm of electric machine design, this served as the primary motivation to further investigation.
This thesis utilizes finite element method (FEM) software, Ansys Maxwell, to examine various characteristics of double-sided linear induction motors (DSLIMs). A materials analysis was conducted comparing different combinations of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials, revealing that a full ferromagnetic configuration offered superior performance. Additionally, multiple winding topologies were tested, with concentrated windings demonstrating the most favorable results among the tests performed. Finally, the study identified that mutual inductance between the two primaries of the DSLIM occurs under certain operating conditions
New TSG Processes: Improving Workflow Efficiency through Desktop UX/UI Design
This senior project is focused on improving the equipment handling processes for the Technical Service Group (TSG) in the Electrical Engineering Department at Cal Poly through the design and development of a user-friendly desktop application. The goal is to create an intuitive and efficient interface tailored to the needs of student staff and faculty, reducing the time and complexity associated with current manual and outdated systems. The design will prioritize usability, accessibility, and task efficiency, key pillars in User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design for desktop environments (Nielsen & Budiu, 2012). This user-centered approach emphasizes desktop-specific interaction patterns such as visual hierarchy and information density
Hidden Miles: Road Trips, Reimagined
Road trips can be described through their freedom and spontaneity, yet the actual planning process can be repetitive and overwhelming. Hidden Miles is a conceptual mobile app designed to reimagine this experience by offering personalized, surprise-filled routes that reduce planning fatigue. The app asks for minimal input with just basic information like a starting point, destination, and interests before dynamically revealing an itinerary with curated stops that reveal themselves as the traveler continues their journey. This approach is grounded in key graphic communication and UX principles, mainly being Design Thinking, Decision Making Theory, and Perception in Interface Design. These theories guide the app’s focus on emotional engagement, reduced cognitive load, and intuitive navigation that ultimately transform the road trip process from a chore into a simple, engaging activity
Bai: Recipes from a Cambodian-American Home Kitchen
Bai, meaning “rice” in Khmer, is a cookbook that highlights the cultural and personal significance of Cambodian comfort food. Created in response to the underrepresentation of Cambodian cuisine and the inaccessibility of traditional ingredients in towns like San Luis Obispo, this cookbook offers simple, beginner-friendly recipes that celebrate food as a bridge to heritage. Featuring original photography and thoughtful design, Bai explores how cookbooks function as both practical tools and cultural artifacts. This project contributes to the broader dialogue on inclusive, culturally responsive design and the role of graphic communication in preserving and sharing marginalized culinary traditions
