Representing Your Destination: A Comparative Analysis between the Destination Marketing Organizations Discover Los Angeles and I amsterdam
Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) are the backbone of tourism. There are many strategies to encourage this, especially in large cities such as Los Angeles and Amsterdam. The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast the marketing strategies used byDiscover Los Angeles and I amsterdam. The following marketing strategies were analyzed: video advertisements, websites, posts on social media, and events. I amsterdam accurately displays the culture of the city through their media and events. While Discover LA does this successfully in event marketing, they struggle to do this through their media. DMOs do not currently use their social media pages as a tool to engage with their followers, so they are recommended to create a more interactive space. In addition, DMOs would benefit from making their content light-hearted and informational. They also should represent themselves authentically, while considering and supporting the locals’ opinions and continuing to reinforce the events that support their mission
Removing Soluble Phosphorus from Tertiary Municipal Wastewater Using Phosphorus- Deprived, Filamentous Microalgae
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can be detrimental to ecosystems, human health, and economies. The low levels of phosphorus remaining in the effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plants can contribute to HAB formation. To achieve more complete phosphorus removal, an effluent treatment method has been proposed that uses phosphorus-deprived, filamentous microalgae to quickly assimilate soluble phosphorus to low concentrations. This study investigated two parameters that influence the feasibility of such a system: (1) the biomass growth productivity of algal cultures during the phosphorus deprivation period and (2) the correlation between the duration of this period and the phosphorus uptake rate by the biomass when contacted with the water to be treated. A single strain of filamentous algae, Tribonema minus, was used. Two experiments lasting 8-9 days compared the biomass productivity of cultures of T. minus grown in phosphorus-replete and -deplete media. While no significant difference in productivity was observed between treatments, further studies should be done to confirm this finding. In addition, 39 uptake contact experiments were conducted. The soluble phosphorus uptake rate was measured for algae deprived of phosphorus for 0 to 12 days of growth. The highest observed uptake rate was 3.83 mg P/g VSS-h, during the first three hours of contact, by biomass that had been phosphorus-deprived for 12 days. The correlation between phosphorus deprivation duration and 3-h uptake rate was 0.34 mg P/g VSS-h per day of deprivation (R2 = 0.81). Additional development efforts seem justified based on these results
An Integrated Approach for Controlling Verticillium Wilt of Strawberry
Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa, Duch.) is an important crop in California, with more than 35,000 acres planted in 2018 resulting in a farm gate value of $3.1 billion. In 2020, California strawberry production accounted for more than 85% of national strawberry production and faces serious threats to production due to various soil-borne diseases. One such disease, Verticillium wilt, is caused by the fungal pathogen Verticillium dahliae and is commonly found in temperate zones around the world where strawberries are grown. Due to the phase-out of efficacious fumigants like methyl bromide, alternative disease management methods have become necessary to alleviate threats to production. Alternative fumigation practices such as crop termination have recently been investigated, and the integration of crop termination with bed fumigation and host resistance can play an integral role in control of Verticillium wilt. A field trial was established at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo to examine the efficacy of integrative management solutions for control of Verticillium wilt of strawberry in a naturally infested field. The efficacy of sequential fumigation applications of crop termination and bed fumigation was examined. Further, the integration of a resistant cultivar was also implemented in hopes of further decreasing plant mortality and increasing yield. Different fumigant products such as metam potassium, metam sodium, and chloropicrin were used to assess their performance in different fumigation applications. Metam potassium and metam sodium were used for crop termination. When used for crop termination, both products delivered significant reduction in soil inoculum density and adequate crop injury. Metam potassium, metam sodium, and chloropicrin were used for bed fumigation. All products reduced soil inoculum density. Lower plant mortality and higher yield resulted from sequential applications of crop termination and bed fumigation, with average plant mortality for non-treated control plots and sequentially fumigated plots being 67.2% and 24.1%, respectively. There were no significant increases in yield for plots bed fumigated and sequentially crop terminated and bed fumigated, but significant increases in yield for all plots treated versus the non-treated plots were found. The integration of a moderately resistant cultivar Valiant after the fumigation series showed lower mortality and higher yield versus a susceptible cultivar Seascape. A two-year study was also conducted in order to evaluate host resistance to Verticillium wilt in 74 cultivars and elite breeding lines from five strawberry breeding programs. Genotypes were established in a field naturally infested with V. dahliae on the campus farm at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. All five breeding programs had a wide range of susceptibility to Verticillium wilt, ranging from 1.5% to 100% mortality for both years of the trial. Twenty-three cultivars and elite breeding lines were common to both years of the trial; of these, five cultivars showed vastly different results between the two years. For example, ‘Monterey’ showed 78.8% mortality in 2021 and 11.5% mortality in 2022. This demonstrates the importance of evaluating host resistance over multiple years under different environmental conditions and field locations
Modeling and Control of a Planar Bounding Quadrupedal Robot
Legged robots have the potential to be a valuable technology that provides agile and adaptive locomotion over complex terrain. To realize legged locomotion\u27s full abilities a control design must consider the nonlinear piecewise dynamics of the systems. This paper aims to develop a controller for the planar bounding of a quadrupedal robot.
The bounding of the quadruped robot is characterized by a simplified hybrid model that consists of two subsystems for stance and flight phases and the switching laws between the two states. An additional model, the Multibody model, with fewer simplifications, is used concurrently to best approximate real-world behavior. The bounding gait (periodic orbit) of the robot is predicted by an optimization method based on the numerical integration of the differential equations of subsystems. To stabilize the gait, a switching controller is applied which can be split into two separate phases: stance-phase and swing-phase control. The stance phase implements reaction force control utilizing a body state feedback controller and a gait stabilizer, while the swing phase deploys position control in conjunction with a trajectory planning algorithm to ensure proper footfall. Numerical simulations are carried out for the system with/without control. The control strategy is further validated by simulations of the Simscape multibody model. The overall simulated controller results are promising and demonstrate stable bounding for four system cycles
Technological Integration to Enhance Jobsite Safety
The content derived in this paper portrays the effect that technology has on safety and how it may be enhanced and altered in the built environment. Ensuring safety on the jobsite is the most important aspect of concluding a successful project. Alongside safety on the jobsite is technology, both of which work coherently together to ensure proper construction. Technology has advanced tremendously in the built environment and it is difficult for all aspects of the project to be up to date universally. Safety lacks the technological integration that is found in the design and preconstruction phases of a project. There are software’s such as Procore that enable a company to hold all safety construction documents together like JHA’s and TBT’s, however the efficiency of the safety components within these software’s can be improved upon. With new technology being implemented into the world today, I have explored new possibilities such as developing a safety software and implementing robotics, BIM coordination, and wearable technology that can adhere to all safety requirements on a jobsite while also preventing injury. Safety is the most important part of a job and should be held at the highest standard with the help of technology
