    Grange Insurance Audubon Center-FIRE PROTECTION LIFE SAFETY REPORT

    This technical approach narrative presents the intent and methodology of the Fire Protection and Life Safety systems for the Grange Insurance Audubon Center located at 505 W Whittier St. Columbus OH 43215. The primary goal of the structure is to provide life and property protection in a fire scenario while taking into account the costs of implementing the criterion and risks associated with the facility. This will be achieved through the appropriate application of requirements listed in the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) and the International Fire Code (IFC) as adopted by the City of Columbus, Ohio, and any reference standards and guidelines. Prescriptive requirements analyzed in the body of this report include building construction, egressing, fire alarm systems, and fire suppression systems. The effectiveness of the fire protection systems will depend on a holistic view of the design, operation, and maintenance of these systems. In addition to a prescriptive analysis of the building, a performance-based analysis is performed. The intent of the performance analysis is to demonstrate the protection of occupants not intimate with the initial fire development, and the improvement of the survivability of occupants intimate with the initial fire development. The building is found to be fully compliant in accordance with the required codes, except for a single dead-end corridor which exceeds allowable length. A solution to this compliance issue is described in the body of the report. The performance-based analysis identifies three potential design fire scenarios: a multipurpose room table fire, a kitchen fire, and a lobby furniture fire. Fire modeling efforts finds that the existing building geometries provide adequate pooling of smoke such that occupants are not exposed to untenable conditions for at least 20 minutes after ignition, at which point they are able to escape the building

    Distribution and Ecological Function of Pacific Lamprey in the San Luis Obispo Creek Watershed

    Pacific lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) is an endemic species to coastal watersheds along the Pacific Rim in North America and Asia. The species\u27 geographic distribution is retracting and has not been mapped precisely, and the ability for the species to provide ecosystem services, such as water filtration, for supporting watershed management has not been tested. The San Luis Obispo Creek watershed, California, USA is at the southern end of Pacific lamprey’s retracting distribution, and the San Luis Obispo watershed is impacted by degraded water quality, making investigation of Pacific lamprey in the San Luis Obispo Creek watershed of direct local conservation importance. This thesis is presented as two manuscripts formatted for submission to scientific journals. The first manuscript features a study that estimates Pacific lamprey presence/absence throughout the San Luis Obispo Creek watershed using Environmental DNA. We compare our estimate to previous estimates of Pacific lamprey population distribution using established eFishing and redd survey methods. We found our estimate of distribution based on Environmental DNA to match the previous estimates throughout San Luis Obispo Creek, as well as indicate a location with Pacific lamprey presence that was previously unsurveyed. In this manuscript, we also discuss advantages and disadvantages to using Environmental DNA as a cost-effective and non-invasive method to survey Pacific lamprey in the wild. The second manuscript is a laboratory study focused on the larval (ammocoete) stage of Pacific lamprey. We tested the ability for an ammocoete population to reduce the concentration of harmful bacteria in water through filter-feeding. We found an increased decline of bacteria in experimental aquaria treated with ammocoetes than in control tanks or tanks containing non-filter feeding Pacific lamprey, indicating that ammocoetes can indeed significantly reduce bacterial loads in a contained environment. The laboratory study was conducted using water from San Luis Obispo Creek that was naturally inoculated with bacteria, generating broader applicability of the study in suggesting that Pacific lamprey have the potential to provide a water filtration ecosystem service in the wild for supporting high water quality watershed management objectives. These two studies contribute to knowledge on how to efficiently survey Pacific lamprey distribution in the wild and benefits the species may provide to ecosystems and human welfare. Collectively, they help us better understand the status and value of this often-forsaken anadromous species

    Girls Build Summer Academy Leadership Summit

    This paper highlights the activities and presentations that will take place during the women in construction leadership summit prior to the Girls Build Summer Academy for high school girls. The leadership summit is a two-day event that will consist of presentations on important leadership and construction topics. The presentations will cover topics such as confidence, safety, leadership assessment activity, tool shop training, emerging trends, career paths, jobsite visit, and a women’s panel. This leadership summit will be implemented in the summer of 2023 and will take place at Cal Poly’s campus in the Construction Innovations Center. The scope of this paper will explain why the presentation topics were chosen and the content that they should include based on an extensive literature review. This leadership summit will follow a similar structure to the Women in Kiewit leadership conference. The goal is to provide leadership guidance to young women who want to work in the construction industry and to implement resources to help the summer camp grow

    Same Polytechnic College Tanzania Build 2022

    In collaboration with The Mbesese Initiative for Sustainable Design, the Cal Poly senior project team has designed, engineered, and prepared construction documents for a new vocational training college in Same, Tanzania, a rural area in the Mt. Kilimanjaro region. Upon its completion, the college will offer quality and practical educational opportunities for up to 1,200 students; in the interim, individual structures will be occupied immediately, adding value to the community throughout the construction process. The campus will house continuing educational programs, sports and agriculture fields, as well as hotels and other community-facing structures

    Novel Hitch Cargo Cart

    This document presents the engineering design process used to develop, manufacture, and test a new and improved iteration of a hitch cart prototype. This process was performed by a team of four mechanical engineering seniors as part of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo’s senior design pathway. The goal of this project was to develop a sturdy and reliable iteration of our sponsor’s hitch cart prototype, that integrated the functionality of a vehicle hitch cargo platform and that of a height adjustable cargo cart into a single streamlined and easy to use product. This design could be used by tradesmen, and outdoor enthusiast to not only transport heavy equipment and cargo to where they’re going, but also offer a form of easily maneuverable cargo transportation once they get there. While similar designs currently exist, none incorporate an adjustable height platform and are either difficult to attach and remove from the vehicle, have a low loading capacity and small storage footprint, or are designed for small vehicle applications. Based on preliminary testing, our design appears to be a promising product that is robust and addresses many of the limitations of competing designs. Future refinement of the design can be done to further improve user experience and increase the potential for use on a wider range of vehicle sizes and hitch classes

    Creation and Testing of a Social Robot Guideline

    For this thesis, I created a guideline for socially assistive robots (SARs), and used it to evaluate a reading comprehension based social robot. To create the guideline I extracted relevant details from published standards about toy safety, radio equipment, electromagnetic compatibility, internet of things security, ethical considerations for human-computer interaction, and data privacy. I then sent a summarized version to experts in the field for feedback. I received seven responses, five of whom were from researchers in academia. The sample size was too small for statistical analysis. Survey responses identified additional areas, such as interactivity and aesthetics, for the guideline. I evaluated a reading comprehension based social robot called HAPI the Librarian with my newly created guidelines. Using HAPI, I found that the guidelines worked, but needed improvement. Improvements suggested for the next iteration of the guide- line are to provide better directives for intangible concepts such as ethics and data privacy. Additionally, the guidelines should help to identify characteristics that raise ethical or data privacy concerns. Overall, these guidelines can be applied to socially assistive robots designed from scratch or purchased off-the-shelf

    Animal-Rights Primitivism: A Vital Needs Argument Against Modern Technology

    In this essay, I argue that those who embrace animal rights should also embrace primitivism—the view that humans should abandon modern technology and take up something like hunter-gatherer technology instead. I call my view “animal-rights primitivism” to distinguish it from human-centered arguments for primitivism. In particular, I employ a vital-needs framework to make my argument. I argue that hunter-gatherer technology is the least harmful kind of technology, it is sufficient to meet human vital needs, and it is possible for humans to make the transition to hunter-gatherer technology while still meeting their vital needs. Alternatively, I argue that even if humans cannot make the transition while still meeting their vital needs, they are responsible for putting themselves in that situation and therefore forfeit the right to aggress against other sentient species to do so

    The purpose of this document is to hypothesize a successful and innovative plan for the redevelopment of the Santa Rosa Plaza Mall (Downtown Mall) in Santa Rosa, California. This project proposal seeks to address the Plaza Mall’s challenges and provide an alternative solution to develop a unique character that promotes a sense of place, foster vibrant civic spaces, and meets the City’s housing and job needs. Shopping malls in the United States are dying and are becoming less popular among the new generation, which means malls must adapt to fulfill the role of “third place” that many people need. This issue needs to be dealt with firstly by revising the existing land use policies and zoning regulations, adapting them to allow a mix of complementary uses such as residential, offices, civic spaces, entertainment, and amenities that offer residents, employees, and visitors, a wider range of opportunities that will enhance the quality of life in the area
