The Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS): A Parsec-scale Multi-phase Outflow in the Super-Eddington NLS1 Mrk 1044
Context. The interaction between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their host galaxies is scarcely resolved. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are believed to represent AGN at early stages of their evolution and to allow one to observe feeding and feedback processes at high black hole accretion rates.
Aims. We aim to constrain the properties of the ionised gas outflow in Mrk 1044, a nearby super-Eddington accreting NLS1. Based on the outflow energetics and the associated timescales, we estimate the outflow’s future impact on the ongoing host galaxy star formation on different spatial scales.
Methods. We applied a spectroastrometric analysis to observations of Mrk 1044’s nucleus obtained with the adaptive-optics-assisted narrow field mode of the VLT/MUSE instrument. This allowed us to map two ionised gas outflows traced by [O III], which have velocities of −560 ± 20 km s−1 and −144 ± 5 km s−1. Furthermore, we used an archival spectrum from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on HST to identify two Ly-α absorbing components that escape from the centre with approximately twice the velocity of the ionised gas components.
Results. Both [O III] outflows are spatially unresolved and located close to the AGN (\u3c 1 pc). They have gas densities higher than 105 cm−3, which implies that the BPT diagnostic cannot be used to constrain the underlying ionisation mechanism. We explore whether an expanding shell model can describe the velocity structure of Mrk 1044’s multi-phase outflow. In the ionised gas emission, an additional outflowing component, which is spatially resolved, is present. It has a velocity of −211 ± 22 km s−1 and a projected size of 4.6 ± 0.6 pc. Our kinematic analysis suggests that significant turbulence is present in the interstellar medium around the nucleus, which may lead to a condensation rain, potentially explaining the efficient feeding of Mrk 1044’s AGN. Within the innermost 0.5″ (160 pc), we detect modest star formation hidden by the beam-smeared emission from the outflow.
Conclusions. We estimate that the multi-phase outflow was launched \u3c 104 yr ago. Together with the star formation in the vicinity of the nucleus, this suggests that Mrk 1044’s AGN phase started only recently. The outflow carries enough mass and energy to impact the host galaxy star formation on different spatial scales, highlighting the complexity of the AGN feeding and feedback cycle in its early stages
Perturbation Based Decomposition for Motor Unit Number Estimation
Motor unit number estimation (MUNE) is of clinical significance because information associated with motor unit populations and the loss of motor units over time are crucial to the diagnosis and monitoring of neuromuscular disorders. The responses of individual motor units can be extracted through incremental stimulation of a muscle group of interest and further analyzed through various methods to compute the MUNE. In this work, the utility of the perturbation-based decomposition by Szlavik will be investigated for this application and compared to the original MUNE approach developed by McComas. Successful decomposition may suggest an alternative method for motor unit number estimation. The decomposition was applied to synthetic incremental twitch tension waveforms and yielded satisfactory approximations of the contributions of individual motor units towards the compound muscle response
The Biological, Physical And Chemical Response Of The Little Creek Watershed To The 2020 CZU Lighting Complex Fire
This post-fire study was conducted to characterize and observe fire induced changes in physical habitat parameters, water-quality conditions and macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Little Creek watershed, a tributary to Scotts Creek located in Cal Poly’s Swanton Pacific Ranch in Davenport, California. Pre-fire data was collected by a Cal Poly student, John Hardy, for his 2017 thesis. Post-burn bioassessment surveys for this study were repeated at four of the same study sites used by Hardy to provide comparisons to the California Stream Condition Index via a modified version of the State of California’s Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program protocol. Macroinvertebrates were taxonomically identified to the family level. Commonly used bioassessment indices were utilized in conjunction with Stepwise regression and Analysis of Variance on both pre- and post-fire datasets to illustrate how physical habitat and water quality parameters changed after the fire and to determine the significance of collected environmental variables (stream shading, cross sectional area, and median particle size) as predictors of macroinvertebrate community structure. Despite most of Little Creek having moderate and high burn severities, it was found that physical habitat, water quality and benthic macroinvertebrate populations were not greatly disturbed by the 2020 CZU lighting complex fire. Proportions of highly disturbance/pollution sensitive taxa and increased following the wildfire and there was a dramatic shift from collector-gatherer to predator organisms. Comparison of pre- and post-fire data in this study showed fire having a minimal effect on the studied watershed. Difference in study goals and associated protocols used in the pre- and post-fire studies and the low water year following the wildfire, complicates statistical comparisons and poses threat to the validity of results. However, there is opportunity for further investigation about the ability of an ecosystem to successfully recover from natural disasters and disturbances, specifically when there is little human impact (or influence) on the ecosystem
Vegetation and its Effectiveness in Replacing Traditional Cooling Systems
This project aimed to analyze if vegetation is effective in replacing traditional cooling systems, when utilized as green roofs and walls. It serves to provide information to the construction industry, designers, architects, and homeowners. Information gathered through a field experiment will be used to give quantitative data on if vegetation is effective and practical in replacing traditional cooling systems in buildings and homes. The basis for the idea of this project stems from two main courses in the Construction Management program, those courses being Principles of Environmental Design, and Sustainability and the Built Environment. The stated courses introduce the idea of utilizing vegetation in construction as well as the many benefits that come with it. This project offers valuable data that quantifies the pre existing claims that vegetation in the form of green roofs and walls can be effective in replacing traditional cooling systems. All data collection through the field experiment will be done as simply as possible to be easily replicated and repeatable for future references
Evaluation Of Facilitation On Translocation Outcomes For San Joaquin Antelope Squirrel In The Carrizo Plain, California
In arid and semi-arid environments, burrowing mammals play a key role in increasing landscape heterogeneity through facilitative species interactions. The loss of burrowing mammal populations can consequently lead to negative effects cascading through the ecosystem. It is critical to understand these facilitative interactions for conservation and management. Understanding facilitative interactions may improve wildlife management tools, like translocation, which is often not very successful. To investigate the importance of burrow facilitation on San Joaquin antelope squirrel (Ammospermophilus nelsoni; SJAS) translocation success, I designed a natural experiment with a burrowing facilitator, the giant kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ingens; GKR). I radio collared 97 SJAS and translocated 67 of those squirrels to uninhabited lands in their historical range, some to a site with GKR (n=33) and some without GKR (n=34). SJAS that were collared but not translocated served as a control for the study (n=30). SJAS translocated to the GKR-absent site had significantly lower duration of study survival than the control sites (15% vs. 47%). While completing my Masters in Agricultural Education, I held the position of Assistant Coach for Cal Poly Rodeo and served as head of media and marketing. The program’s social media rivals that of a professional sports media page. This year, I strived to take it to the next level. Throughout the year, I filmed, edited, and produced videos introducing our freshmen, highlighting our seniors and graduate students, and promoting our events such as the Break-A-Wave and Poly Royal. I also spent time in the arena and around our events shooting photos to be used for our media and website, and coordinated professional photographers and videographers for our events. In the last year, Cal Poly Rodeo has become the most followed rodeo page on the Internet, with over 10,000 followers on Instagram (2,000 of those being from the last 9 months) and over 9,000 followers on Facebook
