Exploiting Non-Western Women in Media Representations
Media representations and advertisements serve as visual mediums through which cultural values are projected and reinforced. Western capitalism relies on Eurocentric media representations that exploit perceived differences of non-white and non-western cultures to sell western products. This paper analyzes recent advertisements from Kellogg’s and Suit Supply as examples of media representations that employ Eurocentric perspectives of non-western cultures to uphold white masculinist and colonial power structures. Therefore, I suggest that the non- western cultures in the Kellogg’s and Suit Supply advertisements exist within a western capitalist vacuum. This way of consuming and representing serves to reinforce western ways of knowing as superior and natural

A Study On API Security Pentesting
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are essential in the digital realm as the bridge enabling seamless communication and collaboration between diverse software applications. Their significance lies in simplifying the integration of different systems, allowing them to work together effortlessly and share data. APIs are used in various applications, for example, healthcare, banks, authentication, etc. Ensuring the security of APIs is critical to ensure data security, privacy, and more. Therefore, the security of APIs is not only urgent but mandatory for pentesting APIs at every stage of development and to catch vulnerabilities early. The primary purpose of this research is to provide guidelines to help apply existing tools for reconnaissance and authentication pentesting. To achieve this goal, we first introduce the basics of API and OWASP\u27s Top 10 API security vulnerabilities. Secondly, we propose deployable scripts developed for Ubuntu Debian Systems to install pentesting tools automatically. These scripts allow future students to participate in API security courses and conduct API security pentesting. API security pentesting, regarding reconnaissance and authentication, is discussed based on the configured system. For reconnaissance, passive and active approaches are introduced with different tools for authentication, including password-based authentication brute-forcing, one-time password (OTP) brute-forcing, and JSON web token brute force
How I Learned to Love Teaching: bell hooks and the Possibilities of the Feminist Classroom
In this critical commentary, I describe the influence bell hooks has had on my pedagogy since first reading her book, Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom, when I was a graduate student in Women’s and Gender Studies in the 1990s. The profound influence hooks’ work had on me, as a first generation, woman of color scholar from a working-class background, cannot be overstated. Her words helped me name and begin to critique and resist the isolation, alienation, and oppressive systems that had, up to that point, shaped my experience and the experience of many women of color in the academy. Her writings inspired me to teach in ways that would engage my students as collaborators and co-creators of feminist knowledge production, to dismantle multiple interlocking systems of oppression
Academic Spaces of Possibility? A Proleptic Dialogue with BlackFeminism at the Center
This critical commentary engages our experiences as co-educators in a “Black Feminist Thought and Expression” (BFTE) course, first-of-its-kind at our predominantly white institution in the U.S.. We imagine and provoke redefinitions of “classrooms” and “students” toward the liberatory dialogic learning bell hooks continues to inspire. We reflect on the potentials and perils of BFTE as pedagogical moves toward 1) becoming learners over and over again and 2) creating multiple different learning spaces, not confined to the physical classroom or to texts-as-usual. By bringing our beings together in both this essay and in BFTE, we re-member the dialogic pedagogy of love-as-action hooks advocated for: involving the complexities of our unique positionalities, their impacts, and our shared commitments to each other and to learning rooted in both the intimate wisdom of the personal and in critical analysis of the social. As co-authors, we identify with divergent academic fields, genders, races, ages, nationalities, and institutional roles. Cal Poly Rodeo | Improving Speed and Consistency of Student Athletes: Goat Tying
Cal Poly Rodeo is an amazing program for student athletes competing in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA). These athletes are expected to obtain a 2.0 GPA in 12 or more units, while being active in practices, and rodeo activities. Mandatory goat tying practice is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 AM. During this time athlete performance is observed and recorded on Tuesdays, and broken down on Thursdays to implement areas where they can improve. The purpose of these practices is to give the athletes feedback from another point of view, and take those points into their own practices throughout the rest of the week. The goal in mind is to improve overall time, by breaking down the steps and taking measurements of them

El Mejor Método de Lectoescritura para Ayuda Adicional en las Aulas
Literacy is important for the student to develop the skills that allow them to see beyond the pronunciation of words and their meaning. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate a better method of teaching literacy to teachers. That way students can improve, learn to speak, read, and write the Spanish language effectively in a simple way.
Additionally, the text explores through the diagnostic evaluation called Basic Phonetic Service in Spanish - Registration, offered by the Santa Maria School District. I evaluated two classrooms with a total of 20 students and determined which groups have been effective in deciding which method is best for each student. These methods are phonetic, syllabic, global, and twenty-days. As a result of this assessment, 13 of the students learned faster, and 7 made some progress but still struggled. It can be concluded that I discovered that the method that works best is the phonetic method because it is an explicit and systematic form of teaching.
As a result, it had a positive impact especially on those students who need more help in reading. It became easier for students to recognize, understand, and learn the alphabet in order to improve and develop their fundamental literacy skills
Polluting The Senses: The Impact Of Noise And Light Pollution On Fledgling Movement And Evolution Within The Avian Eye
There is more human-generated noise and light today than ever before, a trend tied to ongoing urbanization and with reverberating impacts on a wide range of organisms. While research on these impacts is mounting and particularly plentiful when it comes to birds, there is still much to explore within its effects on avian behavior, fitness, and evolution. In chapter 1, we investigated how fledgling movement is influenced by noise and light pollution. While adult birds have well-documented species-specific responses to these stimuli, fledglings are sorely understudied in this context. We experimentally manipulated light levels and took advantage of an existing landscape of artificial noise in the gas fields of northwestern New Mexico to radio track fledglings through gradients of noise and light from four species: Western bluebirds (Sialia mexicana), mountain bluebirds (Sialia currucoides), ash-throated flycatchers (Myiarchus cinerascens), and gray flycatchers (Empidonax wrightii). Step-selection functions assessing resource selection and generalized additive models assessing step length, step velocity, and distance from nest showed no influence of noise and light pollution on fledgling movement, but did show that ash-throated flycatchers moved further each day and further from the nest than gray flycatchers. Our results also revealed the novel pattern of fledglings moving away from the nest through day 10 of the radio tracking period, but moving back towards it after day 20. While we did not find positive results for our primary question, these observations of fledgling movement are valuable given how little we know about this vulnerable life stage.
In chapter 2, we investigated whether dim light vision and its corresponding bony structures within the eye could be under selection with the proliferation of artificial light, given that variation in avian responses to light pollution was recently linked to the quality of a bird\u27s dim light vision. We used museum specimens of six urban adapted species collected across 100+ years and light pollution proxies in the form of collection year and urban density to test two alternative hypotheses. Under the protection hypothesis, selection should drive evolution of poorer dim light vision with higher light pollution exposure, decreasing fitness cost borne via the hormone and circadian rhythm dysregulation associated with retinal-received light pollution. Under the temporal niche shift hypothesis, prolonged foraging opportunities made accessible to birds that can better detect light in artificially lit conditions should drive evolution of improved dim light vision with light pollution exposure. We found that dim light vision improved with collection year for great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) while the opposite was true for red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis); surprisingly, house sparrows (Passer domesticus) and American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) showed support for both hypotheses within single species, exhibiting different directionality in dim light vision patterns for different light pollution proxies. Our results suggest that light pollution may represent a contemporary selective agent for avian vision, but that the directionality may depend on ecological context. More broadly, our findings suggest that quantifying animal perceptual abilities may be important for understanding inter-specific responses to an increasingly bright world
The Evaluation Of Calsporin and IMW50 On Production Performance, Microbial Population, And Immune Function Of The Laying Hen
The use of antibiotics as growth promotors in the food animal industry has led to the generation of antibiotic resistant microorganisms, which are a major health risk to humans. Therefore, bans and limitations, including the FDA’s veterinary feed directive, have been placed on the use of antibiotics as growth promotors, and there has been a push to find an adequate alternative. In the laying hen, probiotics and/or prebiotics have shown promise as they help promote the colonization of beneficial bacteria in the GI tract of the host, increase feed efficiency, increase egg production, and provide protection against pathogenic bacteria.
In this feeding trial, Leghorn HyLine W36 hens were fed diets supplemented with either 0.05% IMW50(prebiotic), 0.05% CALSPORIN (probiotic), 0.05% IMW50 and 0.05% CALSPORIN, or a control diet with no prebiotic or probiotic additive. The birds were maintained on this diet from 1 day to 66 weeks of age, over which time feed intake and egg production was measured. From 37 to 65 weeks of age, every 3-5 weeks, egg quality was evaluated through specific gravity, egg weight, albumen height, and eggshell breaking force measurements. At 6, 16, 32, and 64 weeks of age, the microbiota population in the ileal digesta was evaluated using T-RFLP analysis methods. Then at 64 weeks of age, splenic IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-12 expression was measured by RT-qPCR.
Unexpectedly, fluctuations in feed disappearance were observed, potentially linked to factors such as changes in diet type, temperature variations, feed wastage, or a technical error. Birds on CALSPORIN-containing diets showed resilience and maintained egg production during a decline in feed disappearance, suggesting enhanced capabilities in digesting larger particle sizes. However, there were trade-offs, as egg quality parameters slightly decreased in supplemented diets. CALSPORIN alone showed a promising effect on survival probability. Microbial diversity in the ileum increased with CALSPORIN, but the IMW50 alone led dysbiosis, possibly impacting infection resistance. Additionally, the combined supplementation of IMW50 and CALSPORIN may have introduced a disruption in immunological homeostasis
