Balance Assessment Using a Smartwatch Inertial Measurement Unit with Principal Component Analysis for Anatomical Calibration
Balance assessment, or posturography, tracks and prevents health complications for a variety of groups with balance impairment, including the elderly population and patients with traumatic brain injury. Wearables can revolutionize state-of-the-art posturography methods, which have recently shifted focus to clinical validation of strictly positioned inertial measurement units (IMUs) as replacements for force-plate systems. Yet, modern anatomical calibration (i.e., sensor-to-segment alignment) methods have not been utilized in inertial-based posturography studies. Functional calibration methods can replace the need for strict placement of inertial measurement units, which may be tedious or confusing for certain users. In this study, balance-related metrics from a smartwatch IMU were tested against a strictly placed IMU after using a functional calibration method. The smartwatch and strictly placed IMUs were strongly correlated in clinically relevant posturography scores (r = 0.861–0.970, p \u3c 0.001). Additionally, the smartwatch was able to detect significant variance (p \u3c 0.001) between pose-type scores from the mediolateral (ML) acceleration data and anterior-posterior (AP) rotation data. With this calibration method, a large problem with inertial-based posturography has been addressed, and wearable, “at-home” balance-assessment technology is within possibility

Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist (2022) revisits the complicated fame and misfortune of former college football player Manti Te’o. The documentary traces the arc of Te’o’s athletic career at the University of Notre Dame alongside his relationship with his girlfriend that resulted in intense public scrutiny and gendered ridicule in 2013. Untold offers feminist pedagogues a catalyst for engaging students in critical discourse around the relationships between collegiate sport and race, gender, and sexuality. In this review, I provide a summary of the documentary’s main points and framing, and then discuss at least two ways in which this media can be of service to feminist educators. Specifically, instructors of gender and sexuality studies might consider using Untold first, to analyze the racialized relationship between student athletes and universities and second, to explore how contemporary discourses interrogating athletic performance fortify and further compel heteronormative performances of gender
College Teaching as Care Work
Sociology and higher education pedagogy scholars argue that college teaching is care work. I analyze reader comments generated by two essays published in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Ed about academic care work and find that many commentators think women should care less. Commenters argued that care work was detrimental to student development and faculty performance. In contrast, I argue that care work promotes learning. What is needed are institutions that make it clear that care work is an expectation for all professors, that provide training to enhance care in the classroom, office, lab, and the field, and that reward professors that excel at using care to help student reach their full potential
Power Thyristor Controller for Speed Control of DC Motor
In this work, a Power Thyristor Controller for Speed Control of DC Motor has been developed with the purpose of replacing an existing simulation experiment, aiming to effectively implement the principle of learning by doing. The primary objective of the experiment setup is to illustrate the fundamental principles and operational mechanisms underlying the firing angle and controlled bridge rectifier. The new experiment is taking advantage of the existing FCRO4100 Single Phase Firing Board that was donated to the University by ENERPRO. The pre-programmed microcontroller is connected to the thyristor bridge rectifier that’s powered by 24VAC. Additionally, a DC motor will be connected to the output, which will give an engaging, tangible way of visualizing the output characteristics. The Firing Board is interfaced with a potentiometer that will allow students to adjust the firing angle and observe its effect on the output voltage and the motor. Although the setup is protected by plexiglass to ensure the safety of the students, there are still safety concerns regarding the high RPM motor. To restrict the motor to a safe speed, 6000 RPM, the internal potentiometer Span is adjusted to 35%, while Bias remains set at 100%. The motor speed restriction resulted in a 70% loss of resolution for the external potentiometer, limiting the firing angle swing to 20 degrees. Collecting experimental data becomes challenging as students need to rotate the knob by less than 1 degree for each data set. Despite multiple unsuccessful attempts to resolve the issue by replacing the motor or the external potentiometer, there is still optimism regarding understanding the setup\u27s behavior and successfully implementing this lab experiment in EE 410 Introduction to Power Electronics at Cal Poly
Smart Bottle Firmware and Wireless Charging Integration
In the past 3 decades, there has been a 60% increase of infants under the age of 2 who are considered obese [1]. The California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Child Development Department wants to research parents feeding habits and the Smart Bottle tool was built to aid this effort in finding the relationship between infant obesity and parent feeding habits. The Smart Bottle is a baby bottle meter attached to the bottom of the bottle. The goal of this device is to analyze the state of the feeding the parent is currently at and measure the amount of food the baby has consumed. The most recent iteration of the Smart Bottle (V5) is fully functional and attachable to infant feeding bottles to collect feeding data stored via SD card. V5 also implements a Bluetooth module for wireless data transfer, however, it does not have a User Interface.
This project looks to build Smart Bottle (V6) which implements a wireless charging module integrated alongside a User Interface (UI). The wireless charging allows for a fully sealed enclosure reducing the risk of any electrical hazards whereas the UI allows for faster duplex communication. Wireless charging will be implemented through inductive charging, a wireless energy transfer that uses electromagnetic induction to generate power. This project allows for the Child Development researchers to have a convenient method of data extraction while also protecting the consumers
Learning The Game: Implementations Of Convolutional Networks In Automated Strategy Identification
Games can be used to represent a wide variety of real world problems, giving rise to many applications of game theory. Various computational methods have been proposed for identifying game strategies, including optimized tree search algorithms, game-specific heuristics, and artificial intelligence. In the last decade, systems like AlphaGo and AlphaZero have significantly exceeded the performance of the best human players in Chess, Go, and other games. The most effective game engines to date employ convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to evaluate game boards, extract features, and predict the optimal next move. These engines are trained on billions of simulated games, wherein the strategies become increasingly refined as more games are played. To explore the trade-offs inherent in developing CNNs, we will train them to play the game Connect-4, which is relatively small and has known optimal strategies. In this setting, we experiment with a variety of neural structures and other related factors with only a few hundred thousand simulated games. The results will allow us to compare how different aspects of the neural network impact performance. We propose a framework for this training process which generalizes to any two-player board games meeting some necessary criteria

This project is a collective piece of tangible material that is a product of my years of learning, listening, and witnessing the overlap between the depth of different Spanish-speaking and Latinx cultures, and the various identities within the LGBTQ+ community. Taking a critical lens on what I have learned as an anglo student at Cal Poly through the words of a language that is not mine, this project speaks to the many layers to which my love, fascination and dedication with the Spanish language and cultures have impacted my life. Essentially, this project is a love letter and encapsulation of the complexities of different diverse Latinx communities and an attempt to provide a space for those communities to continue being built and to unite.
With a focus on specific queer issues, art and news in Latinx groups, this website aims to provide a wide scope of interesting resources for those seeking help in school, life, love, culture, and with identity, all provided in Spanish. Oftentimes individuals holding intersectional identities (for instance, perhaps being a trans, Spanish-speaking, Afro-Latinx individual) may not have just one place to go to for all of their needs; whether that be for enjoyment, social support, or language familiarity, having a diverse place to enjoy and celebrate oneself is invaluable and deserves its own home. El Mundo del Amor is my best version of a contribution to these identities and communities that have filled the world with color and riches by remaining authentic
From Greens to General Plans: Reinventing Abandoned Golf Courses
This paper examines three case studies from different areas of the western United States to analyze the challenges and opportunities associated with redeveloping underutilized or abandoned golf courses. By examining how different communities from across the region have approached this process, this study aims to inform city planners, developers, policymakers, and other stakeholders about the intricacies and potential pitfalls of this process. It concludes with a list of necessary considerations for the redevelopment of any golf course and recommends best practices to follow throughout the process of redevelopment
