    Photop App Design and Prototype

    Get PDF
Even with social media, it can be difficult for people to find photographers and videographers for special events. I am a photographer myself, and I find it challenging to find work and connect with people besides friends and family to shoot for and collaborate with. LinkedIn and Handshake aren’t cutting it, nor are the platforms very portfolio friendly. I also noticed many ads for personal portfolio websites on google when you search for photographers, telling me many other photographers are having the same issue. My app Photop will directly solve this problem, providing a platform for artists to be easily discovered, manage their bookings and payments with clients and overall calendar, and help them display their portfolio in a simple way that captures the eye of a visitor. Photop is an app that enables anyone to quickly locate and connect with photographers and videographers near you or where you want to shoot. You can search for the kind of photography/videography you need, the dates you require them, or if you’re hiring for your company. Photographers and videographers who sign up can showcase their portfolios, have a headline and summary about themselves and their work, speak on their experience, and connect with each other. A few seconds is all it takes to capture a client\u27s attention when they view your portfolio/profile. An appealing presentation is crucial to keep them interested and seeking more information (Ragaine, 2022), and Photop does the display work for you. The app also organizes your business, from client messages to bookings, calendars, rates, and payments. A freelance artist’s ability to be well organized and keep on top of those dreary administrative duties will be paramount to their success (Burke, 2008), and this app will greatly help organize and do those dreary administrative duties for you. Lastly, anyone can sign up as a creative on this app, and anyone can utilize its social media aspects of being able to I’m passionate about creating an app that simplifies the process of connecting photographers and videographers with clients for any event. By offering a one-stop shop for communication, booking, financial management, and photo sharing, we can help both parties connect and collaborate with ease. This app will also help artists showcase their skills and personalities to further their careers while providing clients with a user-friendly platform to find the perfect artist for their needs. I believe this project will bring immense value to the camera community and beyond

    Poked Zine

It is well-known that a stigma exists toward tattooed individuals. In the corporate world, many employers have asked their employees to cover any skin ink to preserve the image the company may have. Even in the U.S. Army, recruits are restricted in the placement of their tattoos, not being able to have designs on their face or certain sizes on their neck and hands (Lacdan, 2022). Studies show that “people view tattooed individuals as possessing a number of negative character attributes\u27\u27 (Broussard & Harton, 2018). The question we must ask ourselves is why these stigmas exist. Not only are the number of people getting tattooed rising, but the practice of hand-poked tattoos is something that has been persistent for thousands of years. The first tattoos found with carbon-dated testing identified a body that was 5,200 years old (Lineberry, 2007). Hand poked designs have held cultural and religious significance for many across the globe for generations. In more recent years, tattooing has become a large outlet of self-expression for many. Tattooing is an art form and one that has been discouraged by society for decades. This project aims to explore some of the cultural significance of hand-poked tattoos, insight from contemporary artists, and the expression that surrounds the art form. All of this is to try and create a better understanding and fight the stigma that surrounds permanent body art

Future of Augmented and Virtual Reality in Construction

    Get PDF
A series of virtual design contractors were interviewed regarding the future involvement of augmented and virtual reality software integration with construction processes. Within the construction industry, VDC specialists rely on Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) to create digital models that can be used to analyze the design of a building from all points of view. The interviewees responded to questions about software implementation advantages, and related user experiences. Six interviews were conducted, amongst three industry leading companies. Their assumptions of future AR and VR usage in construction were based on learned knowledge and prior field exploration. Interviewees determined that construction companies can gain more security in their day-to-day tasks through rigorous software implementation. Software adoption within a company carries minor costs, while paying off tenfold in years to come. More precision and efficiency will translate to increased cost savings. An interviewee mentioned, “VR visualization allows us to gain a comprehensive view of how the project will appear when complete, and how to handle it successfully”

Las Vegas Commercial Contractors\u27 Mitigation Techniques for Inflationary Impacts

    Get PDF
Recent rises in inflation have impacted global business. The construction industry in particular has experienced a decrease in already slim margins due to a plethora of factors. Employers have had difficulty affording increased labor rates to accommodate higher costs of living, ultimately leading to a labor shortage in many areas. Supply chain issues are a product of this labor shortage, but also a myriad of other inflation related issues like the price of gas and global trade agreements. This has led to dramatically increased lead times and has posed major supply chain management issues for project management teams. Construction professionals, whether they are general or subcontractors, must address these issues if their company is to remain profitable. In this study, three commercial general contractors and three commercial subcontractors from Las Vegas have been interviewed to examine how their target markets have been impacted by inflation and their implemented techniques to mitigate those challenges. Each interview was conducted in semi-structured fashion with each question addressed throughout the session. The results (degree of depth in technique) from each interview demonstrate an overall objective success as each company has maintained profitable margins and balanced employee retainment

    Modeling Daily Fantasy Basketball

    Get PDF
Daily fantasy basketball presents interesting problems to researchers due to the extensive amounts of data that needs to be explored when trying to predict player performance. A large amount of this data can be noisy due to the variance within the sport of basketball. Because of this, a high degree of skill is required to consistently win in daily fantasy basketball contests. On any given day, users are challenged to predict how players will perform and create a lineup of the eight best players under fixed salary and positional requirements. In this thesis, we present a tool to assist daily fantasy basketball players with these tasks. We explore the use of several machine learning techniques to predict player performance and develop multiple approaches to approximate optimal lineups. We then compare each different heuristic and lineup creation combination, and show that our best combinations perform much better than random lineups. Although creating provably optimal lineups is computationally infeasible, by focusing on players in the Pareto front between performance and cost we can reduce the search space and compute near optimal lineups. Additionally, our greedy and evolutionary lineup search methods offer similar performance at a much smaller computational cost. Our analysis indicates that due to how player salaries are structured, it is generally preferred to construct a lineup consisting of a few stars and filling out the rest of the roster with average to mediocre players than to construct a lineup where all players are expected to perform about the same. Through these findings we hope that our research can serve as a future baseline towards developing an automated or semi-automated tool to optimize daily fantasy basketball

This paper describes the project logistics and pre-construction planning of the 2022 Cal Poly Construction Management Summer Bootcamp service-learning project, including a plan, schedule, and estimate of materials. The service-learning project will be a wooden park bench for the San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens. Four teams of six students each will be provided drawings and, throughout the week-long summer camp, each team will have nine hours and thirty minutes to interpret the plans, cut the materials, and build one bench. The first day will consist of a one-hour project introduction that focuses on the fundamentals of plan reading and preparation of a project execution plan. Construction will begin on day two, where students will begin executing their plan prepared the previous day. Teams will continue to make progress on days three and four. The fifth and final day student will finish the benches before the camp graduation. The purpose of the service-learning project is to develop plan reading skills, understand and implement construction execution process and procedures, and create a fun and collaborative environment for students while allowing them to complete a community-based project for a local non-profit organization

Interlaminar Tensile Properties of Unidirectional and Woven Carbon Fiber Reinforced Toughened Epoxy Laminates

    Get PDF
This project aims to develop a dataset on interlaminar tensile strength comparing unidirectional and woven thermoset matrix carbon fiber composites keeping ply count, matrix material, and fiber diameter constant. The interlaminar tensile strength is an important property relating to the delamination failure mode. Interlaminar tensile strength is determined using the ASTM D6415 testing standard. This test is a modified four-point bend test using a 90° curved beam test specimen. Laminates were produced by laying up pre-impregnated carbon fiber sheets onto a curved beam tooling. The unidirectional laminate was produced with 20 plies in a [0,0,90,0,0]4 layup pattern. The woven fiber laminate was produced with 20 plies of a 2x2 twill weave fabric in the 0° orientation. Both laminates were cured in an autoclave. The laminate panels were machined into the test specimens with a width of 1 inch. The ASTM D6415 tests were performed with a crosshead displacement rate of 2.0 mm/min until there was a drop in load indicating initial delamination. The unidirectional specimens had an average interlaminar tensile strength of 8.72 Ksi. The woven fabric specimens had an average interlaminar tensile strength of 9.52 Ksi. After testing, the specimens were sectioned and imaged using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The specimens for SEM were gold sputter coated and imaged under high vacuum mode. Imaging indicated that for unidirectional specimens, delamination started in the matrix then propagated along the ply boundary. Woven specimens appeared to fail in regions of excess matrix material at intersections of fiber orientations. It is recommended for continuing work to use a test fixture that does not need to be offset. It would also be beneficial to have adjustable span lengths for the top and bottom jaws to increase specimen compatibility. Lastly, increasing matrix toughness would increase failure loads where stress concentrations are common in components
