“It was never enough”: Queer Collectives and Zine-Making in the Classroom
This original teaching activity outlines the use of zine-making in fostering student collectivity, creativity, and intellectual activism in and through absence and silence in feminist classrooms
Using Noninvasive Calibrated Cuff Plethysmography to Observe the Effects of Cold-Water Immersion on Arterial Compliance
As the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases continues to exponentially grow in populations across the globe, the necessity of determining underlying factors, effective methods of diagnoses, and universally available preventive measures also grows. Early detection of endothelial dysfunction, a proven precursor of cardiovascular diseases, can be extremely impactful in encouraging preventative measures and early intervention before medical conditions become chronic. In recent years, ice plunging, a form of cryotherapy involving full body immersion in cold water, has gained popularity within circles of fitness and health practitioners, gaining the interest of people of all backgrounds. Certain parallels observed between the human physiological response to cold exposure and endothelial function encourage further study of the effects of ice plunging on cardiovascular health. Calibrated cuff plethysmography is a promising method of reflecting on endothelial function by measuring arterial compliance of select blood vessels. In this study, a calibrated cuff plethysmography device was built and tested for efficiency as it was used to measure compliance and cross-sectional area of the brachial artery of 14 participants 30 minutes before, immediately after, and 30 minutes after a 5-minute cold plunge in a temperature of 10°C - 15°C. Results found some significant differences between baseline measurements recorded immediately after the ice plunge and measurements recorded during reactive hyperemia conditions at normal body temperature but did not conclude that 5-minute cold-water immersion intervention had a significant impact on arterial compliance or area overall since this was a short term experiment with only acute intervention methods. The device used was concluded to effectively measure arterial compliance and area
Smartphone Based Object Detection for Shark Spotting
Given concern over shark attacks in coastal regions, the recent use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, has increased to ensure the safety of beachgoers. However, much of city officials\u27 process remains manual, with drone operation and review of footage still playing a significant role. In pursuit of a more automated solution, researchers have turned to the usage of neural networks to perform detection of sharks and other marine life. For on-device solutions, this has historically required assembling individual hardware components to form an embedded system to utilize the machine learning model. This means that the camera, neural processing unit, and central processing unit are purchased and assembled separately, requiring specific drivers and involves a lengthy setup process. Addressing these issues, we look to the usage of smartphones as a novel integrated solution for shark detection. This paper looks at using an iPhone 14 Pro as the driving force for a YOLOv5 based model, and comparing our results to previous literature in shark-based object detection. We find that our system outperforms previous methods at both higher throughput and increased accuracy
Cutting Board Business Model
This paper covers a business model and investment proposal for a cutting board business. The cutting board industry is a lucrative sector where there is room to grow as a business while being profitable. There are alot of factors that go into starting a business and making it successful. The student has put this together to be able to give it to a potential investor to demonstrate what he has done and what he plans on doing upon an investment. The student enjoys woodworking and wants to be able to start his own business but has minimal knowledge of what goes into it. Using this opportunity, he was able to take some of the first steps. By laying out this business model and investment proposal the student has a clear understanding of what is needed to be able to start this business post graduation. It also can be used as a reference point for anyone wanting to start a business but does not know exactly where to start. By laying out a business model one can clearly see what is being done and what needs to be done, getting a better understanding on exactly how to run their business successfully
Tehachapi Mountain Trail Association – Trail Bridge Construction
The Tehachapi Mountain Trail Association is a nonprofit organization which operates 32 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails year-round. The 650-acre property is located in the foothills above Tehachapi, CA and offers local residents and enthusiasts from around the area an area to exercise and enjoy nature. TMTA is able to operate through yearly memberships that allow the association to hold insurance as well as continue to maintain and build new trails year-round. After completing a separate project for TMTA in Winter 2022 for CM 420 Construction Service Learning, the President, Brandon Griffiths approached me with the idea of building a new bridge on the property. The scope of this project included building a timber frame bridge to span over a perpendicular trail and cutting a new trail so that hikers and cyclists could also pass under the bridge. All materials were provided through donations from TK’s Pizza and Pasta and Build Group Inc. The approval process for the bridge took longer than expected and the project as a whole was almost cancelled. Once approval was granted, the construction phase took 3.5 days to complete, and the remaining funds were donated to TMTA for future projects
