    Directional Speaker

    Get PDF
Parametric Acoustic Arrays (PAA) are highly directional soundwaves whose attenuation and spread are much less affected by distance from the source as compared to traditional speakers. A well-known application for PAA is the directional speaker. Studies show that noise directly affects health and decreasing noise pollution can help improve the quality of life for millions of people. Directional speakers can revolutionize society by coupling space with sound. This project encodes audio into two RF-Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) waves to drive a transducer array. Each RF-PWM wave interferes with the other in air to generate a Single Sideband (SSB) frequency spectrum that is audible with an inherent directionality. The speaker was made to be cheaper than contemporary alternatives on the market, costing less than $200 and allowing customers with lower budgets to access this modern technology. This cheaper approach using RF-PWM has proven to be viable, producing clear, audible, and extremely directional sound over three feet away from the source

Analyzing Tortuosity In Patterns Formed By Colonies Of Embryonic Stem Cells Using Topological Data Analysis

    Get PDF
Pluripotent stem cells have been observed to segregate into Turing-like patterns during the early stages of Dox-inducible hiPSC differentiation. In this thesis, we de- velop a tool to quantify the tortuosity in the patterns formed by colonies of pluripo- tent stem cells using methods from topological data analysis. We use clustering techniques and the mapper algorithm to create simplicial complexes representing samples of cells and detail a method of evaluating the tortuosity of these complexes. We use the resulting persistence landscapes and their associated norms to evaluate experimental data and simulated data from an agent based model. This thesis finds evidence that tortuosity can be used to detect differentiation in stem cell colonies over time and discusses the accuracy of computer simulations of such colonies

Development Of Load Measurement Technique For Arbitrary Shapes

    Get PDF
Obtaining aerodynamic forces and moments about all three orthogonal axes for arbitrary shapes at arbitrary orientations in a fast manner via a measurement technique specific to Cal Poly’s low-speed wind tunnel to continually obtain the forces and moments under quasi-steady conditions is explored. A Continuous Rotation Technique (CR) uses a 6-DOF load cell and stepper motor to rotate an object about an axis for a complete rotation. The forces and moments acting upon the object pass through the stepper motor and interface plates and recorded by the load cell as the object is rotated continuously a finite number of rotations. An optical encoder installation tracks the progress of a rotation serving indicator between the subsequent rotations to determine starting angles and body slippage. Average loading of measurements at each timestep along the average time for rotation is found. This dataset along the average time is placed in 1-degree bins and averaged to a final dataset of load measurements at 0.5-degree intervals for a complete 360-degree load map. Testing of this technique is performed on aspect ratio 1 circular cylinder and for a sphere. These test cases are representative of the 3D flow features that are prevalent for bodies of finite aspect ratios. The airloads on these canonical shapes were used to calibrate the measurement technique deriving similarity with prior work performed at Georgia Tech\u27s wind tunnel. This thesis showcases the repeatability of the results in a different and smaller wind tunnel with improved certainty on angle measurements. The scope of the thesis tackles the showcase of an initial proof of concept for the incorporation of such a novel measurement technique using Cal Poly resources

Creating a Reusable Bag Service for Instacart

    Get PDF
This senior project is focused on sustainability, specifically in the sector of plastic waste. It looks into an existing brand and program, Instacart, and explores ways to increase Instacart\u27s sustainable efforts which can, in turn, change how grocery stores and other delivery services run their operations. For this project, a new service for Instacart is created where they can reduce, and hopefully eliminate, their contribution to excess plastic waste within the grocery industry and in our planet

BRUNET: Disruption-Tolerant TCP And Decentralized Wi-Fi For Small Systems Of Vehicles

    Get PDF
Reliable wireless communication is essential for small systems of vehicles. However, for small-scale robotics projects where communication is not the primary goal, programmers frequently choose to use TCP with Wi-Fi because of their familiarity with the sockets API and the widespread availability of Wi-Fi hardware. However, neither of these technologies are suitable in their default configurations for highly mobile vehicles that experience frequent, extended disruptions. BRUNET (BRUNET Really Useful NETwork) provides a two-tier software solution that enhances the communication capabilities for Linux-based systems. An ad-hoc Wi-Fi network permits decentralized peer-to-peer and multi-hop connectivity without the need for dedicated network infrastructure. A background process adds disruption tolerance to specified TCP endpoints without any changes to existing software. This allows TCP connections to persist indefinitely over possibly multiple long network outages. Data sent by applications is automatically buffered and transmitted when network connectivity resumes

Cardiac Arrhythmia Detection In Electrocardiogram Signals Using Computationally Intelligent Methods

    No full text
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Deaths from cardiovascular disease jumped globally from 12.1 million in 1990 to 20.5 million in 2021, according to a new report from the World Heart Federation. The Electrocardiogram (ECG, or EKG) is a non-invasive and efficient test that records the electrical activities of a human heart. In recent years, various approaches based on computational intelligence have been developed and successfully applied to automatic detection of cardiac arrhythmia on ECG signals. In this thesis, we study the application of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for identification of cardiac irregularities. The two methods are tested on ECG signals with six different heartbeat conditions in the MIT- BIH Arrhythmia database. Computer simulation results show both methods are highly effective with detection rates of close to 98% and 99%, respectively

2nd Annual Girls Build Summer Academy: Apprentice II Service Project

    Get PDF
Cal Poly’s construction management department hosted the second annual Girls Build Summer Academy in July 2023. This paper highlights the service work project that the three returning academy participants completed during the week-long day camp. The academy’s goal was to provide high school-aged girls the opportunity to learn about the various career paths in the construction industry while emphasizing skilled trade opportunities including concrete, framing, drywall, electrical, and equipment operators. The girls worked to enrich their construction knowledge and grow their skills with hands-on building activities. By the end of the week, each girl had gained the skills and confidence to complete a service learning project for the Turtle and Tortoise Sanctuary of Arroyo Grande - five planter boxes with poles that held string lights. Throughout the process of constructing the planter boxes, the team faced and overcame various challenges with design, materials, and time. This paper highlights the impact of challenges, newfound skills, teamwork, and career advice the campers received throughout the process of planning, building, and completing the service project

ANALYSIS AND INSTALLATION OF A DEMONSTRATION AGROFORESTRY ORCHARD FOR CALIFORNIAN MEDITERRANEAN PLANT COMMUNITIES

    Get PDF
Climate-appropriate agroforestry can provide low-input food security and ecosystem services for local Californian Mediterranean climates, while conserving natural resources (e.g., water, nitrogen, etc.). This project showcases a variety of agroforestry methods for five common plant communities of California and other analogous Mediterranean climates at the CAFES Experimental Farm on the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Plant community species and their ethnobotanical uses were analyzed to mimic and incorporate aspects of native flora. Agricultural plants were also characterized to represent each of the five selected plant communities. GIS was used to assess the project site for soil, slope, and other variables to inform the Agroforestry orchard design. A management plan was lastly developed for continued maintenance and data collection propositions. The core result of this project is the actual “Demonstration Agroforestry Orchard” as a living example of the integration of agriculture with five of our local plant communities around the Mediterranean climates of California, noting the initial responses and changes during and after planting. The agroforestry system is available now for use as an educational hub to support students and faculty in experiential field research. The ultimate goal is to provide a teaching space for education and outreach to support farmers and land restoration efforts as we transition to a more integrated and sustainable agricultural and ecological industry. Let\u27s Talk Body: An Applied Senior Project on Social Media Body Image

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the overwhelming presence of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok in the recent generation\u27s (Gen-Z) daily lives. Influencers have become the new celebrities by creating a “relatable and desirable” lifestyle that users aspire to gain. However, the pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards and buy promoted products can lead to negative effects on users\u27 mental health and self-esteem. The authors of this paper (Tonges and Dwyer) have created a podcast and Instagram account to encourage an honest conversation about the impact of social media on one’s actions, emotions, and brain chemistry. By analyzing social media through communication theories such as Social Cognitive Theory, Users and Gratification Theory, and Cultivation Theory, the authors hope to shed light on the problems associated with the use of social media
