Signatures of Feedback in the Spectacular Extended Emission Region of NGC 5972

    Get PDF
We present Chandra X-ray Observatory observations and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph spectra of NGC 5972, one of the 19 ‘Voorwerpjes’ galaxies. This galaxy contains an extended emission-line region (EELR) and an arcsecond scale nuclear bubble. NGC 5972 is a faded active galactic nucleus (AGN), with EELR luminosity suggesting a 2.1 dex decrease in Lbol in the last ∼5 ×104 yr. We investigate the role of AGN feedback in exciting the EELR and bubble given the long-term variability and potential accretion state changes. We detect broad-band (0.3–8 keV) X-ray emission in the near-nuclear regions, coincident with the [O III ] bubble, as well as diffuse soft X-ray emission coincident with the EELR. The soft nuclear (0.5–1.5 keV) emission is spatially extended and the spectra are consistent with two APEC thermal populations ( ∼0.80 and ∼0.10 keV). We find a bubble age \u3e 2.2 Myr, suggesting formation before the current variability. We find evidence for efficient feedback with Pkin /Lbol ∼0.8 per cent, which may be overestimated given the recent Lbol variation. [O III] kinematics show a 300 km s−1 high-ionization velocity consistent with disturbed rotation or potentially the line-of-sight component of a ∼780 km s−1 thermal X-ray outflow capable of driving strong shocks to photoionize the precursor material. We explore possibilities to explain the overall jet, radio lobe and EELR misalignment including evidence for a double supermassive black hole which could support a complex misaligned system

Examining the Use of a Network Bypass to Circumvent Data Diodes Within Industrial Control Systems

    Get PDF
Our modern world relies upon large scale industrial plants, that are manged by Industrial Control Systems (ICS), to provide critical services such as electricity, water, or waste processing. Over time, these systems have been increasingly connecting outdated systems to modern internet technology to provide additional functionality such as real-time monitoring while also enabling operators to conduct modern business analytics. Thus, these plants offer a potential target for attackers. Recently, such attacks on Industrial Control Systems have increased in number with well publicized attacks such as Stuxnet and TRISIS. To protect against such attacks while also modernizing their networks, Industrial Control Systems have adopted new technologies. One such technology is the data diode. Replacing the protection formally offered by air gaps, data didoes allow data, often in the form of metrics, to flow outwards while also physically preventing malicious data from flowing into the critical section of an ICS. This thesis presents a series of escalating attacks and defenses corresponding to different threat models based upon the attacker\u27s level of resources and sophistication. These attacks and defenses take the form of three case studies. In case study one, this thesis identifies the naive scenario in which an attacker inserts a bypass. Secondly, in case study two, this thesis discusses how this can be expanded by taking advantage of the existing network design. Finally, in case study three, this thesis demonstrates an invasive scenario in which an attacker executes a man-in-the-middle attack with a network bypass. For each attack, this thesis also offers some possible methods of defense which may not be present in typical Industrial Control Systems due to the assumptions made about the inherent physical defense of industrial networks

Groups of Non Positive Curvature and The Word Problem

    Get PDF
Given a group Γ\Gamma with presentation \relgroup{\scr{\scr{A}}}{\scr{R}}, a natural question, known as the word problem, is how does one decide whether or not two words in the free group, F(\scr{\scr{A}}), represent the same element in Γ\Gamma. In this thesis, we study certain aspects of geometric group theory, especially ideas published by Gromov in the late 1980\u27s. We show there exists a quasi-isometry between the group equipped with the word metric, and the space it acts on. Then, we develop the notion of a CAT(0) space and study groups which act properly and cocompactly by isometries on these spaces, such groups are known as CAT(0) groups. Furthermore, we show CAT(0) groups have a solvable word problem

Translations of the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum

    Get PDF
This project is my personal translation of the informational signs found inside the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum. The inspiration and intention for this project comes directly from my experience as a WLC student; Some of my previous assignments had emphasized engagement with our local Hispanic community in real-world contexts, which eventually became my primary motivation when deciding on the topic of my senior project. My goal is twofold: ensure that all San Luis Obispo residents can learn about the history of their home, not just English speakers; and generate more awareness, appreciation and patronage of this valuable but largely unknown resource. Through these translations, I hope to make the museum more accessible to the important part of my community that uses Spanish as their preferred (or only) language
