Predicting Rheology Of UV-Curable Nanoparticle Ink Components And Compositions For Inkjet Additive Manufacturing
Inkjet additive manufacturing is the next step toward ubiquitous manufacturing by enabling multi-material printing that can exhibit various mechanical, electronic, and thermal properties. These characteristics are realized in the careful formulation of the inks and their functional materials, but there are many constraints that need to be satisfied to allow optimal jetting performance and build quality when used in an inkjet 3-D printer. Previous research has addressed the desirable rheology characteristics to enable stable drop formation and how the metallic nanoparticles affect the viscosity of inks. The contending goals of increasing nanoparticle-loading to improve material deposition rates while trying to maintain optimal flow dynamics is the closely held trade secret in formulating these inkjet compositions. We use data from previous experiments and the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics to train machine learning regression models to predict the relevant factors of inkjet printability at a standardized temperature of 25ºC: viscosity, surface tension, and density. These models were used to predict the rheological factors of the main components of a UV-curable inkjet ink formulation: UV-curable monomers and oligomers, photoinitiators, dispersants, and humectants. The Challenges of Building a Mass Timber Single-Family Home: A Case Study
This case study explores the various challenges faced by those involved in the pre-construction and construction of a mass timber, single-family home in Central Texas. Using semi-structured interviews, a subcontractor, an owner, a manufacturer, and two construction managers were questioned about their specific challenges with the build. These challenges were solely related to the use of mass timber on the project. In recent years in the United States, mass timber has become an increasingly desired building material to use in a commercial and multi-family residential context. Due to limited information and builder inexperience using mass timber in a single-family homebuilding context, this study presents much needed information pertaining to this topic. The literature review focuses on recognized, existing challenges with mass timber. The mass timber product used in this case study home is mass plywood, or “mass-ply,” a unique and newer type of mass timber. This different and unconventional method of single-family home construction presented an array of challenges to the parties involved, including risk, lack of mass timber knowledge, and technical questions on-site. There was found to be overlap between the existing challenges with mass timber and the challenges identified in this case study
Skip the Grid: Solar Energy Concepts in Navajo Nation Schools
Skip the Grid is a non-profit initiative with a goal of providing solar power to homes with school-aged children in the Navajo Nation. California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) partners with SOLV energy, and Heart of America (HOA) to provide approximately 30 homes each year with Goal Zero solar panels, and educate students in the surrounding areas about how solar energy can help power communities. This year, a group of 20 students from departments including Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Management and Protection, Mechanical Engineering, and Graphic Communication joined the initiative and traveled to Shiprock, New Mexico for the installations. Additionally, the students participated in community outreach by teaching students in Kirtland, New Mexico about the benefits of solar energy. The team focused on families with students that attend the Central Consolidated School District, a district which spans 3,000 square miles, with most of its schools being within the Navajo Nation. This is the third consecutive year Cal Poly has participated in this initiative, and it will continue to evolve and improve for years to come
Skip the Grid: Delivering Solar Energy in the Navajo Nation
Skip the Grid is an interdisciplinary service-learning project to install solar energy systems on dwellings in the Navajo Nation. This project is a large collaboration between students from 7 different majors at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), SOLV Energy, the educational equity non-profit, Heart of America (HOA), and many industry and community sponsors. Through HOA, Skip the Grid targets homes of school age children that have limited or no access to electricity. On March 24, 2024, a group of 20 Cal Poly students traveled to Farmington, New Mexico to begin collaboration with the Consolidated School District. Over the following 4 days, students installed 24 Goal Zero solar energy systems on homes throughout the greater Shiprock area. This project enabled all Cal Poly students to learn about solar energy, the people and culture of the Navajo nation, the importance of group dynamics, and energy inequity. The Cal Poly students took to heart Cal Poly’s motto of “learn by doing”. This trip was the third consecutive year and will continue to grow to support the people of the Navajo Nation

Resolves that the Legislative Liaison will be a position appointed by the Executive Committee in the same way that they select committee membership, based on a statement of interest and experience and that the term be 2-years and that the term start October 15; and further resolves that the Academic Senate requests that President Armstrong fund travel for legislative advocacy efforts where appropriate and where advocacy aligns with the California State University and Cal Poly and approve at least 4 quarter or 3 semester WTUs of reassigned time to be provided to the Legislative Liaison and a Summer stipend should Summer advocacy work be needed
AGED 539 Graduate Internship Report - Clovis East High School
This internship/project report includes documentation required in meeting the quality criteria for secondary-level programs of instruction in agriculture. The documents are concurrently used for the Agriculture Incentive Grant review process at Clovis East High School conducted by representatives of the California Department of Education. The supporting material includes information to receive state and local funding, outline the goals and objectives of the program, along with an overview of Clovis East High School, the agriculture program and the community. The project includes the revision of the Agrisciene Pathway Capstone Course Curriculum and Pacing Guide. This pacing guide will allow educators to intentionally teach the Advanced Interdisciplinary Science For Sustainable Agriculture course
