Generating a Novel Legislator Organization Score

    Get PDF
Ever since the 2010 Citizens United v. FEC, corporations and organizations have been able to contribute expenditures and resources into political legislators and campaigns. It has become apparent over the years that organizations can excise significant influence in direct ways to influence campaigns across the United States. During this period, Digital Democracy has collected large amounts of data pertaining to legislative bill information, voting patterns, and donations on behalf of the California public to raise awareness. Digital Democracy has also released its own scoring system that compares the amount of aligning votes between a legislator and an organization. However, this may not capture the full details on how a legislator\u27s behavior aligns with an organization. This thesis presents a novel legislator organization score using the data from Digital Democracy in order to build a comprehensive scoring system that takes into account multiple ways organizations can influence how a legislator can vote, including scores pertaining to vote alignment, donations, party alignment, party deviation, and party leaders. Utilizing surveys and interviews with multiple experts in the field, we found that our scoring system is a viable alternative to just using vote alignment while capturing more information than the previous score. This score is more useful in calculating the full extent of how a legislator\u27s behavior may align with an organization\u27s interests

Cultivating AgriCulture - Cultivando AgriCultura: Content Creator

    No full text
Agriculture is rooted in culture, yet we rarely discuss the people who drive the industry today. Many voices have yet to share their stories of influencing or making a difference in the agriculture industry. As a result, the idea of a podcast arose as a free, convenient, and accessible way for everyone to hear and communicate stories. During the project, my co-host, Daniela Ramos, and I will work together to address this issue. To diversify and separate the workload, we will each host three episodes individually. As part of my role, I will also be responsible for marketing, including creating websites and social media platforms. This podcast aims to spotlight the stories of people of color within the agriculture industry, delving into their backgrounds, journeys in agriculture, and the challenges they face. This podcast can inspire students, young adults, and others to pursue careers in agriculture despite the obstacles many of these individuals have overcome on their paths to success

Cultivating AgriCulture - Cultivando AgriCultura Communications Specialist

    No full text
The goal of this project is to provide a space for industry professionals of minority backgrounds to share their story on how they reached their current position in agriculture. I anticipate for this podcast to inspire students and our society on the resiliency these speakers faced and overcame in an industry that was not built for them to succeed in. To fulfill my Masters of Agriculture Education Program, this project entails being a Co-Host, Director, and Communications Specialist of an agricultural podcast focused on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in agriculture. I will be collaborating with my colleague, Sophia Garcia, to plan, execute, and complete this podcast project. Although both of us will be working on this podcast together, we will each be focusing on different parts of executing this podcast. I will be focusing on all the communication forums with guests, needed equipment/scheduling, and developing discussion and outreach templates. In addition, as I completed my undergraduate degree in agricultural communications, I will also be the head of the production aspect of the podcast, which entails the camera, audio, and software equipment

Next Generation Science Standards; Plant Science Education Stimulators

    No full text
What is an Education Stimulator? The idea behind Education Stimulators is to help (in this case) high school aged students get familiar with the science material they are about to be learning from their teacher(s) from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) curricular code. Whether it’s a student’s first time learning the material or it’s familiar to them, it allows for them to gear their brains towards what is to come without too many surprises that could uninterest them. There are three different types of Education Stimulators included with KEYs given also

Jorge Ricardo Masetti: Journalist, Guerrilla, Cold Warrior

The following thesis describes the life and activities of Jorge Ricardo Masetti, an Argentinian journalist who was assigned to interview Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution against dictator Fulgencio Batista. Masetti was responsible for broadcasting interviews with Fidel Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara to the rest of Latin America for the first time, allowing people to understand what was happening in Cuba through the words of the Revolution’s leaders. Masetti returned to Cuba to found the first international Latin American news agency, Prensa Latina, which still exists today. However, ideological factionalism within Prensa Latina drove Masetti to resign in 1961. Afterwards, he worked closely with Che Guevara to foment a guerrilla uprising in the pair’s home country of Argentina, forming a guerrilla army known as the Ejército Guerrillero del Pueblo (EGP). Using the experiences of revolutionaries abroad in places like Cuba and Algeria, the EGP faced several setbacks in their area of operations, the province of Salta, that ultimately led to the group’s demise before their operations had truly begun. Masetti, cornered by the Argentine Gendarmerie, disappeared into the jungle in 1964, never to be seen again. His life illuminates aspects of transnational ideology, namely socialism, and its mosaic nature. His life also reveals facets of the informational and journalistic endeavors in Latin America during the Cold War

    Two-Story DoD Office Building

    Get PDF
This report is a comprehensive analysis of the fire protection and life safety components for an administrative office building designed for the Department of Defense. The owner of the facility has requested that all identifying information, including name and location, not be included in this report and has since been removed from the documents. The building was designed in 2019 and is currently under construction. The building is two stories with a total area of approximately 125,000 square feet. The building is primarily used as office space for administrative personnel and consists of open and single-user office space, conference rooms, and associated mechanical, electrical, and storage facilities. Additional spaces include a two-story video production studio, printing room, snack bar, and spaces typical to most office buildings such as restrooms and break areas. The building was evaluated for compliance with the applicable prescriptive codes and standards required for all structures designed under the Department of Defense. As required by UFC 3-600- 01, the International Building Code was used to determine fire resistance requirements, allowable floor area, building height limits, and building separation distances. NFPA 101 was used for building egress and general life safety requirements, including occupant loads, exit capacities, and travel distances. It was determined that the design of the building meets the applicable Building Code and Life Safety requirements. The building is protected throughout with automatic wet-pipe sprinkler systems designed in accordance with UFC 3-600-01 and NFPA 13. The sprinkler systems are supplied from the existing underground water distribution system without the aid of a fire pump. Additionally, the facility is provided with a fire alarm and mass notification system designed to meet UFC 3-600-01, UFC 4-021-01, and NFPA 72. All active systems were determined to be designed per their applicable codes and standards. A performance-based analysis has also been conducted to evaluate the building’s design in response to a design fire scenario applicable to the use, function, and contents of the building. Three design fires were proposed, and the one chosen evaluates the effect of a furniture fire within the first-floor lobby area. This design fire was chosen as it poses a threat to exit access travel paths in the first-floor exit access corridor as well as the second-floor lobby area connected to the first floor with an unenclosed exit access stair. Modeling software, Pathfinder and PyroSim, were used to aid in this analysis. Pathfinder was used to determine the Required Safe Egress Time based on a maximum occupant load per NFPA 101. PyroSim was used as the graphical user interface of the FDS engine to determine the Available Safe Egress Time applicable to the selected design fire scenario. Visibility was used for the tenability criteria when assessing the available safe egress times (ASET), specifically 33-foot (10 m) visibility at a height of 6 feet above floor level. The analysis determined that the required safe egress time (RSET) for occupants to clear the second-floor landing is 269 seconds after ignition. The results of FDS modeling determined that untenable conditions begin to occur within the same space at 175 seconds, and complete failure in tenability occurs at 215 seconds. This results in a failure of the goals and objectives of the performance-based analysis for this area. The first-floor exit access corridor required 358 seconds for occupant evacuation. At the same time frame, the design fire created untenable conditions for portions of the exit access corridor, with visibility criteria failing throughout the entire corridor at 415 seconds. With failure starting to occur, and a minimal safety factor before complete failure, this area does not meet the goals and objectives of the performance-based analysis as well. Results of the performance-based analysis indicate that there is not adequate available egress time with appropriate safety factors to ensure occupants have egressed completely or to a safe space in their required egress time. Therefore, it has been recommended that fuel loading be limited or prohibited within the first-floor lobby and/or additional separation be provided between the lobby and connecting corridor and between the lobby and second-floor space
