Joseph Moxon: Fueled by Science, Extinguished by Class. How a Forgotten Middle-Classed Early Modern English Puritan Printer Mathematician and Globe-Maker Helped Forge the Scientific Revolution and Democratize Knowledge Among the Trades
Joseph Moxon, raised within the trades, elevated into the middle-class, was an inducted Fellow of the Royal Society, Hydrographer to the King’s Most Excellent Majesty, Printer, Author, Translator, Maker of Globes and of Spheres, Maker of Maps and of Mathematical Instruments, Engraver, and Entrepreneur. Moxon was the quintessential Renaissance Man. A tradesman living in a time of great scientific intrigue and discovery, Moxon, acknowledged by few mid-seventeenth century historians, rightfully contributed his scientific discoveries—in the forms of tutorials and manuals written for the common man—as a testimony to all printers who have helped in the progression of the Scientific Revolution. For without them, books would not have been printed, knowledge would not have been shared, and innovation and discovery would have been possibly retarded and/or stifled. This paper presents his story through the acclaimed yet forgotten works of Moxon’s Mechanick Exercises Volume I and Volume II as the first scientifically influenced instructional manuals and guides for the trades and as the foundation for acknowledging the printing press as the catalyst for democratizing knowledge
Harmonic Flow Modeling and Analysis of a Green Hybrid AC/DC Seaport Power System
This thesis aims to design and develop a model for a proposed Green Seaport power system and perform harmonic analysis. The model was developed using MATLAB Simulink and tests were performed by dividing the system into several Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) operating modes such as simultaneous charging and discharging, simultaneous charging, and simultaneous discharging. For each mode, BESS state of charge and other factors such as solar irradiance for the PV system, load levels and power factor were varied to observe the impact on system’s voltage Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) level and current Total Demand Distortion (TDD). 62 separate simulations were formulated and tested individually. Results demonstrated that all measured voltage THD passed the IEEE 519-2022 standards. However, most of the testing modes had cases of current TDD that exceed the level recommended by the IEEE 519-2022 standards
Hunting Without Grounds: Why Hsiao Fails to Justify Trophy Hunting
Trophy hunting is probably bad. Timothy Hsiao (2020), however, thinks that it isn’t bad. This is because he thinks that animals lack moral status. Other philosophers have tried to argue against the theoretical grounds upon which Hsiao denies moral status to animals. I suggest that Hsiao’s arguments for trophy hunting should be rejected simply because they have extremely unintuitive implications. They imply that it would be fine to play ‘panda-ball,’ a variation of baseball where players use panda cubs as bases and balls, or even to blow up planets full of panda cubs just for the fun of it. As I suggest, these implications alone give us sufficient grounds to reject Hsiao’s arguments
Can Functional Traits Predict Turnover of Alpine Plant Species in Yosemite National Park?
Alpine species are a useful tool for predicting the effects of climate change on lowland species. A growing body of research has begun assessing the question of how alpine species will change in response to changing climate. In the study of alpine plant species, some researchers have begun exploring the idea that functional traits could be predictive of turnover in alpine plant communities. In this study, I used a species’-level approach to assess the ability of six functional traits (vegetative height, generative height, leaf thickness, leaf area, leaf dry weight, specific leaf area) to predict species turnover in alpine plants within Yosemite National Park. I found weak evidence that a species’ leaf thickness and leaf area may be predictive of their likelihood of colonizing in the alpine over the last 30 years, such that species with thinner, smaller leaves had more colonizations. Given the lack of significant trends for vegetative and generative height and specific leaf area, the contradictory results for leaf dry weight (lower leaf weight predicted more colonizations and more extinctions) and the lack of significant trends between any of the sixth functional traits and turnover, I concluded that that these six functional traits may be weak or ineffective predictors of turnover for alpine plant species in Yosemite National Park

Resolves that the Academic Senate of Cal Poly encourages the California State University’s Chancellor’s Office, the CSU Board of Trustees, and the administrations of both Cal Poly and Cal Maritime to engage in transparent and frequent consultation with the senates, faculty, staff, and student governments at each campus, and it further resolves that the CSU Chancellor’s Office, the CSU Board of Trustees, and the administrations of both Cal Poly and Cal Maritime recognize the respective expertise of each campuses’ senates, faculty, staff, and student governments regarding curriculum, academic calendar planning, resource allocation and planning, policy implementation, facilities use and management, and student governance if this integration is approved by the CSU Board of Trustees; and further resolves that the Academic Senate of Cal Poly encourages the Cal Poly administration to form a committee to contribute to the integration staffed by representatives from key stakeholder groups on each campus including: faculty, staff, and students in order to develop an implementation plan that prioritizes the retention of staff and faculty (tenured, tenure-track, and both full- and part-time lecturers) on each campus, if integration is approved by the CSU Board of Trustees
