The Effect Of Probiotic Supplementation On Serum Metabolite Concentrations In Young Holstein Heifers
The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effect of a multi-strain probiotic on serum concentrations of selected metabolites in young calves. Holstein heifers (n = 112) from a commercial dairy were enrolled within 48 h of birth and placed into individual hutches. Calves were weaned at 60 d of age and remained in their hutches until 90 d of age, when they were moved to group housing. Calves were placed into 2 treatment groups: 1) control and 2) B. subtilis, B. lichenformis, L. animalis, and P. freudenreichii probiotic (Bovamine Dairy Plus, Chr. Hansen, Milwaukee, WI). Control calves received 0.5 g of lactose in milk once daily until weaning and 0.75 g in grain thereafter. Treatment calves received 0.5 g (1.1 × 10^10 cfu/g) probiotic in milk once daily until weaning and 0.75 g (1.65 × 1010 cfu/g) probiotic in grain thereafter. Jugular blood samples (6 mL) were collected at 14, 25, 45, 63, 77, 120, and 180 d of age for the determination of serum β hydroxy-butyrate (BHB), plasma glucose, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), total free amino acids (TFAA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF). Data were analyzed as a mixed linear model to determine the fixed effects of treatment, day, and their interaction and also the random effect of calf. Single degree of freedom contrasts were used to evaluate the effect of phase (pre- vs. post-weaning) and the interaction of treatment with phase. Concentrations of BHB increased throughout the 180 d of the study and were greater (P \u3c 0.001) in the post-weaning (661 μM) vs. pre- weaning (240 μM) phase and greater for the probiotic-treated calves in the post-weaning phase only (treatment × phase, P \u3c 0.001). Glucose concentrations were greater (P \u3c 0.001) for the pre-weaning (88.0 mg/dL) vs. post-weaning (81.1 mg/dL) phase and greater for calves receiving probiotics in the pre-weaning phase only (Treatment × phase, P \u3c 0.01). Non- esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations were greater (P \u3c 0.001) in the pre-weaning vs. post-weaning phase and were greater in calves not receiving probiotics (treatment × phase, P = 0.0036).Serum TFAA concentrations were greater (P \u3c 0.001) in the pre-weaning (3.37 mM) vs. post-weaning (3.03 mM) phase and greater for probiotic-treated vs. control calves (3.22 mM vs. 3.11 mM; P \u3c 0.001). Concentrations of BUN were greater (P ≤ 0.001) in the post-weaning vs. preweaning phase and were higher for probiotic treated calves vs. control in the post-weaning phase (P \u3c 0.001). Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF) concentrations were affected by treatment (P\u3c .001). Calves that received probiotic supplementation had lower TNF concentrations on day 63 of life when compared to control calves on day 63 of life. Data suggest that nutrient metabolism and ruminal development were enhanced by feeding a multi-strain probiotic

High-Power Microwave Antenna Design
High-power microwave antennas are essential for defense industry radar systems, cyber warfare, and power transmission. The US Department of Defense a SBIR proposal specifying the need for a high-power phased-array microwave antenna for the US Air Force.
Vivaldi antennas, invented in 1978 by Peter Gibson, have been widely adopted for radar applications due to their high bandwidth and gain performance. Considerable amounts of research exists on designing Vivaldis for different applications ranging from radar to communications. Using antenna theory and past research, a new Vivaldi antenna was designed to meet the requirements mandated by the DoD research contract.
This project consists of the research, design, and fabrication of an all-metal, high-power Vivaldi antenna. The design was modeled and simulated using Ansys HFSS to observe the idealized performance. After meeting the desired specifications through simulation and optimization, the antenna design was fabricated via an investment casting process
Software Defined Radio Applicability Investigation for OWL Integrations Inc.
OWL Integrations Inc. is developing a LoRa mesh network using “Duck” radios to communicate using the LoRa modulation technique. This mesh network is intended for emergency communications in situations where Internet or cellular access is unavailable, such as disaster relief or warzones. The goal of this project is to investigate the feasibility of using the CaribouLite SDR as a potential base for a SDR-based “Duck”. This feasibility testing will be performed by integrating the CaribouLite with a Raspberry Pi single-board computer and investigating its compatibility and functionality for the purposes of a communication devic
Exploration of Software Defined Radios to Increase Capabilities of Affordable Mesh Networks
Project OWL is developing a LoRa mesh network “DuckLinks” for emergency communications, and the current LoRa protocol the Clusterduck Protocol is based on is severely limited in data rate. OWL plans to use Raspberry Pi computers to develop the next phase of Duck radios, which greatly opens the computing potential and flexibility of the system the Ducks run on. Using LimeSDR and GNU Radio, an open source SDR programming environment, this project seeks to develop a simple SDR-based packet transmission system that allows for communication with Duck radios as well as the use of a different modulation scheme for higher data rates. This project also has a secondary goal of developing curriculum for the software defined radio class, EE504, as well as assist in onboarding incoming students for future OWL research projects
GPS/IMU Board
Providing information on a vehicle’s location during a competition can be used to provide greater insight to progress the car is making or what portion of the track caused failure. As a result, we will be designing a board that includes a Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) module to provide position coordinates, which is driven by an STM32 processor to feed into the DAQ through Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol.
The GPS module will produce an initial positioning and will continue to do so unless it is unable to create a solution, possibly due to over-arching terrain and limiting sky-view. The IMU is also implemented in the board to gather information on the vehicle’s speed for performance evaluation. Using an STM32 processor, these components will be placed onto a single board that will be attached onto the vehicle. As a result, positioning data of the car will be calculated and recorded by the DAQ to be stored into an SD card, which can later be retrieved for post-analysis

Seal Counting on our Plages (S.C.O.O.P.)
The Vertebrate Integrative Physiology (VIP) lab monitors the population of northern elephant seals at the largest mainland breeding colony, located at Piedras Blancas (San Simeon, CA). As the population expands, more human-seal interactions and conflicts over land use occur. The VIP lab\u27s work informs California State Parks and helps with the management of the rookery. Currently, members of the VIP lab fly a drone over the beaches, capture multiple images, and manually count the seals, which takes around 14 to 21 hours of analysis per survey. Machine learning methods such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNN) have been shown to quickly and accurately determine the count but require lots of data, which is not feasible for this task due to the 79 available beach images. By dividing larger beach images into smaller sub-images, it is possible to generate more data, facilitating the use of deep learning techniques. This thesis outlines a pipeline to use these sub-images and determine the seal count of a beach image
