MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL
VISRUTH SRIMATH KANDALI
I saw a dead man in the mirror today 
Had a harrowing face 
Unruly hair 
Unkempt beard 
Unchecked mind
I could feel his poison through the glass 
It curled round my mind, a snake 
Awaiting the perfect moment to strike 
I try to wrest control but it won’t (can’t) budge—it clings too 
tightly, Wearies me; I don’t really care anymore 
His legs buckled and his hands shook 
Weak in body—just like spirit—it seems 
Falling to his knees, his hands 
Clasped 
Begging for mercy 
all of a sudden a sword in my hand, his head bent over neck 
fleshy and willing I raise my hand to strike it feels so natural I can 
hear the whoosh of the blade it glints magnificently I see in the 
reflec— 
I saw myself in the mirror today 
And I was scared 
Taking to my knees
