    Dáyo: Mga tula

    No full text

Should we reform or abolish animal labor? Peter Singer\u27s animal liberation in the 21st century

    No full text
The dissertation critically examines the ethical implications of animal labor through Peter Singer’s principle of equal consideration of interests, focusing on autonomy, instrumentalization, and interspecies justice. It engages with competing perspectives, particularly Jocelyne Porcher’s romanticization of traditional husbandry, which challenges the reduction of human-animal relationships to structures of exploitation. Porcher argues that animal labor, rooted in cooperation and affective bonds, can constitute a meaningful interspecies relationship rather than a form of domination. While reformist thinkers suggest that animal labor can be ethical through welfare protections and institutional reforms, abolitionist theorists maintain that it remains inherently coercive and denies interspecies justice. The study argues that these frameworks fail to resolve fundamental ethical concerns, including autonomy, instrumentalization, and interspecies justice. Applying Singer’s principle of equal consideration of interests, this research contends that the ethical response to animal labor is not reform but abolition. Through a systematic philosophical analysis, it aims to contribute to contemporary debates on animal ethics, labor rights, and interspecies justice

Magic: The gathering\u27s narrative as an aesthetic experience

    No full text
This paper examines the card game Magic: the Gathering (shorthanded to Magic, MtG, or MTG) and seeks to show that its narrative elements may be able to provide an aesthetic experience based on the framework of John Dewey. Dewey (1934) wrote about the aesthetic experience as different from the normal, mundane everyday experience. The aesthetic experience is described as being distinct and worthwhile, with the person focused on that experience and having strong emotional ties to it. The mundane experiences however, which Dewey referred to as anesthetic experiences, did not keep the person focused on it or lacked the emotional ties of the aesthetic. They are differentiated based on qualities that the aesthetic experience possessed which are not found in the anesthetic. Dewey’s experience provides a framework that has often been used to discuss the aesthetic value of traditional artistic mediums. The arrival of new mediums however offer an interesting use of Dewey’s experience in showcasing their possible aesthetic experience. One such medium is games. Different forms of games have begun to gain recognition and the argument has arisen for their place within art. Video games are the prime example of this, with many arguing for their elevation as artforms. Card games and older modes of games, such as Magic, have equally retained their popularity and cultural significance among those who play them. They suffer however a lack of literature which could highlight the significance they provide in the attainment of aesthetic experiences by those who play them specifically through the narrative game elements present within it. This paper examines a case study by Pietari Majuri of Magic’s narrative elements and how it affects player enjoyment. This paper will showcase that such narrative roleplaying elements elevates the game of Magic into providing aesthetic experiences

Standing up: An epistemic analysis of the experiences of online harassment of women in journalism in the Philippines

    No full text
The extension of harassment to the digital space has allowed influencers and trolls to amplify targeted attacks against women who are working in Journalism in the Philippines. While the Philippines have existing laws protecting press freedom, journalists are still at risk of getting attacked online and killed in broad daylight. These instances are fueled by remarks coming from high-ranking officials in the national government, echoed through extensive reiterations from influencers and coordinated dissemination of content by trolls. This kind of phenomenon also persisted in the Philippines, specifically during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte. The Duterte administration’s misogynistic attitude towards the media amplified social media content creators to carry over the same kind of behavior into the content they make that targets women working in journalism. Thus, this leads to the rise of epistemic vices in the perpetrators of online harassment against women. This paper asks what epistemic vices are present in the perpetrators of online harassment of women working in journalism in the Philippines. Following this, there are epistemic vices that can be found in the perpetrators of online harassment that is done against women working in journalism, such as (1) epistemic arrogance, (2) epistemic laziness, and (3) close-mindedness. The discussion covered the experiences of Filipino women who were in the forefront during the silencing of women working in journalism, notably Maria Ressa, Pia Ranada, and other journalists using Jose Medina’s framework on epistemic vices and Karen Frost-Arnold’s framework on online harassment. The paper used an epistemic analysis to arrive at the discoveries of these epistemic vices mentioned above

Gender bias in the law: Examining the adultery and concubinage laws within the Philippines

    No full text
This paper discusses gender bias within the laws of the Philippines. This is not to say the Philippines has not made strides in terms of lessening the gender disparity within its borders. Headway is being made in terms of reaching inclusivity and equality within the country. The United Nations (UN) have set Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for their partner countries to combat current societal problems. This paper will focus on SDG 5 which tackles gender equality within the country. The current situation of achieving this goal, within the Philippines, has revealed a measure of parity between men and women, considering the targets and indicators which track this specific SDG progress within the country. However, the problem arises when the constitution states that it strives to make laws as inclusive and as equal as possible, there are still instances wherein this is not the case. This can be seen upon examination of the laws regarding concubinage and adultery; there is a clear difference in the treatment of the two genders. This contradiction of what the Philippine Constitution strives for and, as a result, must be dealt with to better align with the goals set forth by the constitution. This paper utilizes Feminist legal theory also known as Feminist jurisprudence, as it places importance on gender equality rather than maintaining the status quo of one thinking that one gender is superior to another. Feminist Jurisprudence can be used to solve this problem as it takes into account the unique lived experiences of women when it comes to policy making and revisions to current laws. I claim that progress towards the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines, on Adultery and Concubinage can have more progress using the three methods of Feminist Jurisprudence, as it tackles aspects of gender equality in the Philippines. These methods are unmasking the patriarchy, contextual reasoning, and raising awareness

Preparedness and confidence of english teachers in catch-up fridays across different grade levels

This study explored the preparedness and confidence levels of English teachers participating in Catch-Up Fridays, revealing several key findings. The majority of respondents were aged 41 to 45, female, teaching Grade 7, holding a bachelor’s degree, and occupying the position of Teacher I. The data suggests a mature, experienced group of educators at the foundational level of secondary education. The analysis showed that English teachers generally perceive their level of preparedness and confidence for Catch- Up Fridays as satisfactory. However, when examining demographic factors, only the grade level significantly influenced the teachers\u27 preparedness, while confidence levels remained consistent across different demographics. The study also found a significant relationship between teaching strategies and approaches with educational outcomes, while teaching methodologies did not show the same level of impact. An action plan was proposed to enhance teaching strategies, approaches, and methodologies to support the professional development of teachers and improve educational delivery. The study concluded with recommendations for future research to explore factors affecting the demographic composition of educators and their influence on teaching efficacy. Further studies should also investigate the aspects that contribute to the teachers’ preparedness and confidence, the specific influence of grade levels, and the impact of teaching strategies versus methodologies on educational outcomes. These investigations aim to develop targeted strategies that can enhance teacher readiness, engagement, and overall effectiveness in Catch-Up Fridays and similar educational initiatives

Hermeneutic Phenomenology of Language Teaching in the Context of Modular Approach in Disruptive Times

The onset of COVID-19 pandemic made massive changes in the education systems around the world. The global health emergency had exposed how the countries are equipped for learning continuity in precarious situations. The Philippines implemented modular learning, a distance learning with the use of self- learning modules. This challenged the Oral Communication in Context teachers of Anda, Pangasinan in teaching speaking among senior high school learners. The conduct of this hermeneutic phenomenological study on English language teaching is important as delivery of education is challenged by natural phenomena and man- made disasters. This paper aims to understand how teachers adapt to emergency or crisis and perform their duties and responsibilities such as establishing teaching- learning process despite the distance separating between them and their learners. This study employed qualitative methodologies, including semi- structured interview and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The researcher analyzed the experiences of six (6) teachers in teaching oral communication during the pandemic and their views on readiness in fulfilling duties in emergency situations. The study highlights the teachers’ desire and determination in teaching English despite the difficulties they met such as zero experience in facilitating the learning setup, inadequacies on learning materials, and the threat of the virus to their health. Despite the adversities, they managed to cater lessons with the help of online platforms, and partnership with parents and stakeholders. Their experiences are used by the researcher to craft framework towards improving English teaching delivery in times of emergency and crisis
