    No full text
Slow violence in post-Yolanda literary writings (Poems and personal narratives)

    No full text
This study examines the narratives surrounding Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) through the theoretical lens of Rob Nixon’s concept of slow violence, a form of environmental harm that unfolds gradually and invisibly across time and space. While Yolanda is widely remembered as a sudden and catastrophic event, this study argues that the disaster\u27s long-term consequences—prolonged displacement, environmental degradation, and intensified socio-economic precarity—constitute a deeper, slower form of violence that disproportionately affects marginalized communities. By analyzing poems and personal narratives, the research explores how these literary writings construct the experience of environmental disaster not only as a moment of crisis but as a continuation of historical and political inequities. Furthermore, it examines how these texts reconfigure notions of place, belonging, and ecological responsibility, proposing a form of ecological literacy rooted in lived experience rather than scientific abstraction. Additionally, the study aims to reframe disaster narratives not as passive recollections of loss but as active interventions in climate discourse, capable of influencing policy, advocacy, and cultural memory

How tiered learning stations (TLS) foster grade 10 students’ productive participation in constructing quality scientific explanations: A multiple case study in a Canadian science classroom

    No full text
This study explored how Tiered Learning Stations (TLS) supported Grade 10 students in constructing scientific explanations and participating productively in science lessons. Conducted in a secondary school in BC, Canada, the school followed the BC curriculum, which emphasizes the development of students\u27 core competencies. To examine this, a multiple case study approach was employed, focusing on three students with varying CEFR levels. Namely, Student A (C2), Student B (B1), and Student C (A2) were selected to represent active, passive, and non-verbal participation styles, respectively. Using the exploratory qualitative approach, a multiple case analysis of three (3) students with different participation levels (active, passive, and no participation) was the main focus of this study. The data included audio and video recordings, student worksheets, surveys administered to the students, and observation notes. These were thematically analyzed using the constant comparison method with a priori themes from literature on the different levels of participation and the criteria for good scientific explanation. Findings showed that TLS provided flexible learning opportunities suitable for each student’s strengths and language proficiency. Student A regularly participated in group tasks, which helped her produce well-developed explanations. Student B showed limited participation but became more active in Lesson 3, where her verbal contribution aligned with her strongest written explanation. Student C, although silent throughout all group activities, demonstrated deep understanding through written and visual tasks, showing that participation can also occur non-verbally. The tiered structure of the stations, from concept recall to real-world application, guided the students’ thinking and supported different ways of expressing understanding. Stations 4 and 5, in particular, allowed students to apply science creatively and reflect on social or ethical implications. Survey responses from the whole class confirmed these trends, with many students reporting increased confidence, especially in scientific writing and when working with visuals. Overall, this study found that the use of TLS fostered inclusive and meaningful participation in the classroom. By providing structured and differentiated tasks, TLS supported the students in constructing quality scientific explanations, regardless of their language level. Humans of AI: Digital workerism and articulations of sociality in AI data work in the Philippines

    No full text
This thesis seeks to understand the nature and purpose of sociality among Filipino AI data workers. I use Muldoon et al.’s (2024) term ‘AI data work’ in pertaining to the human labor involved in annotating data sets for artificial intelligence (AI) models. The data annotation market continues to grow alongside the demand for accurate AI models, with the Philippines being among the countries that provide data annotation services to the Global North. Extant literature on AI data workers often describes their work as menial, precarious, and isolating, whereas literature on digital platform workers reveal their tendencies to engage in social interactions to survive and navigate ambiguous working conditions. However, the nature of sociality among AI data workers remains understudied. I employ Englert et al.’s (2020) framework on ‘digital workerism’ to facilitate a research process that engages with the technical, political, and social compositions that underpin AI data work in the Philippines. Drawing from in-depth interviews with Filipino AI data workers, I find that sociality transpires when workers form a sense of mutual aid or engage in transactional relations such as knowledge-sharing on tasks, the role of language in group chats, and selling answer keys for assessment exams, to name a few. Employing the digital workerism framework in examining Filipino AI data workers not only spotlights the nuances in their work experience, but also reveals how sociality becomes a step in worker organization. Communication scholars, legislators, and academic think tanks may find this thesis useful in examining AI data work in the Philippines or in identifying ways to provide them better support amid uncertainty and ambiguity at work. Keywords: Digital Platform Work, AI Data Work, Digital Workerism, Socialit

    Initially positive sign patterns

    No full text
A nonsingular n × n matrix A is said to be initially positive (IP) if the first column of A and the first row of A^{-1} are both positive. IP matrices are used to construct matrices with negative entries that still satisfy the Perron-Frobenius property. In this paper, we provide ways to construct IP matrices for any order n by conic condition, geometric-combinatorial duality of convex polyhedra, and linear algebraic duality. We provide geometric characterizations of IP matrices via cones and simplices. We also present an elementary characterization of IP matrices via cofactors and determinant. We then provide a characterization of IP via combinatorial matrix theory by providing a list of sign patterns that require or allow IP for small orders

Bed Allocation Model for Infection Control During a Pandemic

    No full text
This study proposes a model of allocating beds in a hospital considering infection control during a pandemic. The problem was formulated using the quadratic assignment problem (QAP) in a multi-period planning horizon. The main objective is to minimize the spread of infection by maximizing the total distance (TD) between areas assigned to the pandemic and non- pandemic patients. Model validation using GAMS showed that the assignment of patient groups to areas is determined by the arrival rates of patients and the area’s capacity. The model was able to identify periods when the sharing of space was more advantageous. The model’s outcome shows that assigning more rooms to pandemic patients can affect the spread of infection, but it is necessary. It is better to have smaller shareable spaces as the inflow of pandemic patients increases. Hospital administrators may use the model for planning, enabling them to identify and prepare areas to accommodate the increasing number of infectious patients, giving them the valuable lead time to do so. Managers can direct the flow of patients with more certainty, giving them more time and energy for other pressing matters. They may also incorporate other considerations specific to the circumstances of their facilities into this model

Social Message in Advertising and Social Change: An Empirical Investigation of Relationships

    No full text
This study was carried out to investigate consumer behavior toward advertisements that convey social messages. Not many studies have focused on the social message in ads and the subjective well-being of customers regarding such ads. To study this gap, the paper examined the relationship between (a) the attitude towards the ad with a social message and the purchase intention of the consumer and (b) the purchase intention of the consumer and their subjective well-being. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to study the interrelationships within the proposed model. The data was collected through an experiment and qualitative survey among university students. A field survey of 395 students was conducted to test the hypotheses. The results confirm that attitude towards the ad positively affects the purchase intention. Moreover, purchase intention positively influences the subjective well-being of the consumer. This study adds to the theory by providing a new insight into the advertising literature. It also offers marketers and advertisers the requisite knowledge on commercial advertisements targeted at bringing about social change and consumers’subjective well-being
