A multiple case study toward the development of an enhanced framework in the implementation of an internal quality assurance in RVM schools in the Philippines
The purpose of this multiple case study is to provide an in-depth analysis of the experiences of the case units under study as regards challenges, triumphs and impacts and participants\u27 views in implementing the RVM Quality Road Map towards the development of an enhanced framework in the implementation of internal quality assurance in RVM schools in the Philippines, intended for their school management and curriculum audit. The research participants or case units were the selected five RVM Schools in the Philippines. Case Units 1, 2, and 3 were from the fully implementing schools, Case Unit 4 was from the partially implementing schools, and Case Unit 5 was from the non-implementing schools. There were 6-7 participants from each case: the school head, two middle administrators, two faculty and one non-teaching staff, and another personnel as validators. The school heads were invited separately for the in-depth interview (IDI), and the four to five participants per case unit were invited separately for the focus group discussion (FGD). The gathered data were validated in each case by interviewing former employees in the schools during the implementation of the RVM QRM. The data gathered from the interview were subjected to thematic analysis, resulting in themes across cases: six under challenges, seven for triumphs and impacts, and eight for participants\u27 views. A cross-case analysis of the themes revealed certain shared issues and unique results in several organizational domains. It highlighted how intricate organizational dynamics are and how crucial it is to have customized strategies considering particular settings
Knowledge review of Cycas species diseases and identification of Aspergillus flavus causing leave spot
Cycas species, representing the old Cycadaceae family, have important ecological and botanical functions. However, they are increasingly threatened by plant diseases. Despite their importance and medicinal value, microbial populations in cycas leaves are responsible for disease development and affect plant health and conservation practices. This research seeks to determine and describe the causative pathogens of cycas leaf disease through a narrative review of known Cycas diseases, and to identify the causative fungal pathogens of cycas leaf diseases from sample collected from Cavite and Nueva Ecija. This study revealed that C. revoluta is the most susceptible species to fungal diseases globally, particularly to Phytophthora and Fusarium species. Moreover, common pathogens are fungi like Alternaria, Phoma, and Colletotrichum, which produce necrotic lesions and root or leaf rot. Subsequently, disease incidence is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas, with humid environments that speed up disease development. And lastly, management practices differ around the world but focus on integrated methods employing chemical, cultural, and biological control techniques. In the laboratory, several fungal isolates were collected and pathogenicity tests were performed to determine causal associations between fungal isolates and leaf symptoms. One of the isolates was identified as Aspergillus flavus, a previously undocumented causative agent of cycas leaf spot disease, based on cultural and morphological characteristics. This study adds to a greater understanding of plant-pathogen interactions by elucidating microbial diversity linked with cycas leaf diseases. It informs future conservation strategies for these botanically and ecologically important species
Assessing the status of Ascaris spp. among children with disabilities in Laguna, Philippines
Ascaris spp. is a soil-transmitted helminth that remains a significant public health concern among vulnerable groups such as Children with Disabilities (CWD) in the Philippines. This study assessed the prevalence of Ascaris spp. infection among CWD in Laguna, Philippines, and identified risk factors associated with the transmission. Stool samples were collected from 30 CWD participants across eight barangays but only 25 samples were analyzed using the Kato-Katz technique. The results revealed a 24% infection rate, with Barangay Magsaysay exhibiting the highest prevalence at 60%. Statistical analysis identified associations between the likelihood of Ascaris spp. infection and pre-existing medical conditions (p = 0.0368) as well as close contact with individuals experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms (p = 0.0087). The findings indicate the increased susceptibility of CWD to parasitic infections and the urgent need for interventions. Collaboration between local government units (LGUs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can improve public health strategies, particularly by promoting better sanitation, hygiene education, and regular deworming programs
Allocating resources in a chemical plant security system with the use of game theory and ALOHA
The purpose of this study is to identify security vulnerabilities within a chemical production system and to determine the optimal allocation of defensive resources, considering different attacker types and their potential strategies, minimize vulnerability, and maximize facility security. Chemicals are the driving force behind contemporary civilization. Chemical facilities provide a significant risk due to the presence of hazardous materials and challenging production circumstances. Research indicates that an assault on a chemical facility has the potential to result in a significant number of casualties. Given the increasing frequency of terrorist strikes globally, communities must use their limited defensive resources to safeguard chemical facilities against potential attacks. Extensive research has been conducted on the probability of terrorists targeting chemical industries. The existing literature on plant protection operates under the assumption that the aggressor exhibits “rational” behavior. This paper examines a game theory model that aims to safeguard chemical plants in situations when both the defender and the attacker exhibit “bounded rationality.” This paper assumes that the attacker will utilize techniques that have a high potential for profit and a high likelihood of success. This paper also employs game theory to allocate defensive resources. It employs game theory and risk assessment to analyze the tactics employed by both defenders and attackers. The assailants at the chemical facility target the most valuable objectives. The attacker’s parameters in the model are unknown. It implements a previously researched algorithm for solving games. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that despite a bounded rational attacker reducing the anticipated gain for the defense, the equilibrium strategy remains robust
Water quality and plankton richness and abundance in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) aquaculture sites in Lake Taal from selected municipalities in Batangas
Lake Taal, one of the Philippines’ vital freshwater aquaculture hubs, faced intensification of aquaculture activities, which affected its water quality and ecosystem. To assess the lake’s condition, the study determined the water quality and plankton richness and abundance of Lake Taal in August 2024, focusing on both inside and outside the tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) cages across Agoncillo, Laurel, and San Nicolas, Batangas. A total of 58 phytoplankton genera and 17 zooplankton taxa were documented, with 6 phytoplankton genera and 3 Rotifera recorded for the first time within the tilapia cages of Lake Taal. Agoncillo significantly differed in zooplankton abundance with San Nicolas (p = 0.0004), while phytoplankton abundance was not significantly different across the municipalities and between inside- and outside-cage conditions. Agoncillo and Laurel had varying ranges for DO (2.5–10.06 mg/L), pH (7.9–8.5), TDS (897–930 ppm), and conductivity (1792–1865 μS/mL). Among the municipalities, San Nicolas recorded a higher temperature (30.4–30.7 °C) and NH₃ concentration (0.251–0.885 mg/L). Transparency (17–28.8 cm), PO₄³⁻ (0.2–0.3 mg/L), and NO₃⁻ (0.113–0.301 mg/L) were relatively consistent across the three sites. All municipalities exhibited higher levels than the DENR standard for NH₃ (\u3c 0.06 mg/L), PO₄³⁻ (\u3c 0.025 mg/L), and conductivity (50–1500 μS/mL), while DO (\u3e5.00 mg/L) in Agoncillo fell below its minimum level, indicating high nutrient loading in all sites and oxygen depletion in Agoncillo. Phytoplankton abundance and Cladocera richness were correlated with water quality parameters DO, pH, and transparency, while zooplankton abundance and Rotifera and Copepoda richness were correlated with TDS and conductivity, indicating how varying environmental conditions in aquaculture sites supported phytoplankton and zooplankton populations. Dinoflagellata richness was correlated with NH₃ and NO₃⁻, while the richness of Charophyta, Heterokontophyta, and Chlorophyta was correlated with temperature and phosphate, indicating how water quality in aquaculture sites favored certain phytoplankton groups. These findings provided significant insights into the ecological health of the water in the selected municipalities and guided future strategies for preserving its health and ecosystem
A game theoretic approach to Philippine anime convention vendor spaces
With the growing interest in conventions and other fandom-based events, many small merchants have taken it as an opportunity to expand their business to include original and fandom-based merchandise. Due to the rise of fandom-based culture, many fans are willing to support local merchants focused on their favorite media franchises. However, as with many business ventures, many factors affect the potential revenue maximization for all members of the equation. This study aims to model the strategic interactions among the merchandise suppliers, vendors, and management in Philippine anime conventions using the framework of sequential games. By examining the players’ equilibrium behavior, the research aims to understand how each participant can achieve their optimal outcome within the dynamics of the convention environment. At the same time, this approach examines how consumer behavior and externalities influence the decision-making of stakeholders, ultimately affecting the overall profitability of convention spaces. We utilize the players’ sequential equilibrium strategies to analyze their likely behaviors under various scenarios involving consumer behavior and externalities. The simulations are based on data gathered from a survey administered to personalities and attendees of Philippine anime conventions. This study is significantly relevant because its model captures the real decision-making patterns and interactions found in Philippine convention spaces. Beyond theoretical value, it contributes practical strategies for improving stakeholder coordination and maximizing profitability in similar event-based markets
