    Pagsibol is a short film that boldly reclaims the narratives of resilience, defiance, and love that transcend time. Through non-linear structured narrative, the film illustrates the unbreakable spirit of queer individuals who dare to exist authentically against the odds. Queer identities in the Philippines have long been subjected to scrutiny, leading to a continuous struggle, within the LGBTQ+ community, for genuine acceptance beyond mere tolerance. The story follows Mikael, a non-binary individual who returns to their rural hometown after the passing of their devout Catholic grandmother, Amalia. Amidst their grief, Mikael uncovers a series of hidden letters that reveal Amalia’s secret relationship with a fellow nun, Clarita. What was once buried away by fear and repression resurfaces as an enduring testament to the power of love and resistance. As Mikael pieces together their grandmother’s hidden past, they find themselves confronting their own struggles with identity, acceptance, and even faith. In Amalia’s silent defiance, Mikael discovers a legacy of courage that empowers them to embrace their authentic self. By intertwining past and present narratives, Pagsibol highlights the cyclical nature of oppression and resilience in the queer experience. It aims to dismantle the narrow and often stereotypical portrayals of LGBTQ+ individuals in Philippine media— advocating for more nuanced and diverse representation, especially of non-binary and sapphic narratives. More than a critique, this short film is a reclamation— an assertion that queerness and faith are not mutually exclusive, but rather interconnected in the deeply personal journey of self-discovery

    On star double graphs

    Let G be a triangle-free graph with chromatic number k. In 1955, J. Mycielski introduced a graph operation called the Mycielskian of G (also called the star shadow graph of G), denoted by μ(G), and proved that it is also a triangle-free graph with a chromatic number k+1. Inspired by this, we propose two new variations: the star double graph of G, denoted by D*(G), and the Mycielskian of G with index t, denoted by μᵗ(G), for a nonegative integer t. This study explores the structural properties of these newly introduced graph operations and examines their similarities to the classical Mycielskian construction.Furthermore, we compute key topological indices for star shadow graphs and star double graphs, including the Harary index, Wiener index, and the Zagreb coindices. Additionally, we investigate the existence of independent [1,2]-sets in the Mycielskian of common graph families

    Milkfish (Chanos chanos) Bones as a Biosorbent for Mercury (II) Contamination in Water

    Heavy metals, such as mercury contamination in water sources are a major environmental and public health issue in many countries. Traditional methods for removing heavy metals from water are effective but often costly and unsustainable and may produce secondary waste. Recent trends favor more sustainable alternatives, such as biosorbents in treating water with heavy metals. Milkfish (Chanos chanos), a common fish in the Philippines, contains hydroxyapatite in the bones that can bind with heavy metals through physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. This study aims to evaluate the mercury (II) reduction capacity of biosorbent derived from milkfish bones in water, specifically by investigating the effects of contact time and concentration. Utilizing a true pre-post experimental research design, the biosorbent was applied to mercury-contaminated water at 12 and 24 hours of contact. Analysis from atomic absorption spectroscopy shows that the percent removal of mercury after 12 and 24 hours is 98.83% and 99.36%, respectively. Moreover, the results demonstrate that mercury concentrations before and after biosorbent treatment are significantly different, highlighting the strong adsorption capability of the biosorbent. Furthermore, the results also reveal a non-significant difference in the contact times, underscoring the biosorbent\u27s efficiency and potential cost-effective application in 12-hour treatments. These findings suggest that biosorbents derived from milkfish bones can serve as a viable solution for mercury-contaminated water treatment. Further research should be conducted to evaluate biosorption in varying conditions and examine the biosorbent mechanism, regeneration, and reusability

    Assessment of Bat Species (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in Canubas Cave, Kibawe, Bukidnon, Philippines

    Bats, flying mammals, are essential to ecosystems, playing vital roles in pollination, seed dispersal, and insect control. Despite their ecological importance, no prior bat research exists for Canubas Cave, Kibawe, Bukidnon. This study aimed to assess the bat species at the site, documenting their morphometric data, diversity and richness indices, and conservation statuses. A purposive sampling design was implemented by setting up mist nets inside and outside the cave. A total of 13 individuals were identified, comprising three species from two families: Rousettus amplexicaudatus and Eonycteris spelaea (family Pteropodidae, fruit bats), and Miniopterus schreibersii (family Miniopteridae, bent-winged bats). Based on Shannon\u27s Diversity Index, the bat diversity in Canubas Cave was very low, while the species richness was low according to Margalef\u27s Index. Additionally, the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species categorizes R. amplexicaudatus and E. spelaea as Least Concern, and M. schreibersii as Vulnerable, highlighting the presence of a species facing a higher extinction risk despite the overall low observed diversity

    Exploring concepts and practices of collaboration of Filipino school counselors with other mental health professionals

    The present study explored Filipino school counselors\u27 concepts and practices of collaboration with other mental health professionals. Using a multiple-case study design, interviews were conducted with fourteen practicing guidance counselors to examine how they define collaboration, their reasons for engaging in it, perceived benefits, and the challenges they encounter. Findings indicate that school counselors in the Philippines conceptualize collaboration primarily through engagement practices such as consultation, referral, and follow-up, which differ from Western models emphasizing co-planning and interdisciplinary teaming. School counselors viewed collaboration not only as a means of providing the best possible care for the clients but also as a path towards professional development, augmenting the limited options for growth. Findings also revealed that school counselors typically initiate collaboration activities, revealing possible imbalances among practitioners. Moreover, the absence of a protocol in conducting collaboration and the unstructured or informal agreement with other mental health professionals were considered to be challenges that impede reaping the full potential of collaboration. Implications for counseling practice and the professional development of counselors were discussed. Keywords: collaboration, school counselors, mental health professional

    Self-regulated learning in student-led generative AI-based learning activities of junior high school students

    Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has prompted significant paradigm shifts in teaching and learning. While it offers various advantages, it also poses challenges depending on how it is used. This study examined students\u27 perceptions of GenAI and analyzed their activities and self-regulated learning skills with these tools. A total of 179 junior high school students in a private institution in the Philippines participated in the study through an online survey. In addition, nine teachers from different subjects were interviewed to corroborate the data. The results showed that students have a positive perception of GenAI and a clear understanding of what it is, its uses, and limitations. Findings indicated students’ willingness to use GenAI, yet they have concerns about compromising learning outcomes and the likelihood of overreliance. Furthermore, students reported using it for different academic purposes, but mostly for practicing their skills. The data analysis also revealed students’ infrequent use of GenAI tools and generally neutral stance on their SRL skills. Despite these, a strong positive correlation was found between student-led GenAI activities and their self-regulated learning skills (ρ =.771, p \u3c .001), suggesting that the more they engage in activities using GenAI tools, the more it supports their SRL skills. The findings highlight GenAI’s potential to support students’ SRL skills, but it is reliant on its effective integration in education and the strong digital literacy of the students. Therefore, there is a call for institutions to provide learners with proper guidance on GenAI ethical use and to refine policies on using them

    Assessing the Eutrophication Potential of Manila Bay using Landsat 8-derived NDVI and NDWI Parameters

    Eutrophication, characterized by the presence of excess aquatic nutrients, poses a detrimental environmental threat to Philippine water bodies such as Manila Bay—consequently degrading water quality and augmenting algal blooms that harm aquatic life. This may be caused by a variety of issues such as urbanization and assorted nutrient overloading. Thus, monitoring of its susceptibility to eutrophication is a valuable step in mitigating its potential effects. This study utilized Landsat-8 derived satellite imagery of Manila Bay to analyze the eutrophication potential of the bay from January 2024 to December 2024 using the open-access QGIS software for processing. Two spectral indices: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), which are commonly used for monitoring vegetation quality and mapping of water bodies, respectively, were used to map and analyze the eutrophication potential of Manila Bay and three selected focus areas (commercial, vegetation, and Pasig River outlet) across 12 months and during the wet and dry seasons. Data collection and processing resulted in the creation of maps that visualize eutrophication potential per month, per Philippine season, and per chosen focus area. Additionally, multiple graphs were also created to visualize and compare changes in eutrophication potential overtime. The study recommends the verification of results through various field validation techniques, either in conjunction with remote sensing or as an alternative technique itself. Additionally, other eutrophication parameters, indicators, and indices are also recommended for further analysis

    Bagyo ka Lang!: The Impact of Typhoons on the Lives and Productivity of Contractual Workers at Miriam College High School

    Every year, the Philippines faces devastating weather-related calamities that significantly affect vulnerable communities. Since it is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Filipinos are more prone to experiencing natural calamities such as typhoons, which negatively impacts the community. Contractual workers are defined as those who work under a “no work, no pay” policy and work for a specific period. Due to the absence of paid leave, health benefits, and stable income, contractual workers are financially vulnerable, making it harder for them to recover from disasters. This study explores how typhoons impact the daily life and work efficiency of contractual workers at Miriam College High School, identifies natural disaster assistance/s, and understands the physiological and financial vulnerabilities they become exposed to, and the perceived disadvantages and advantages of contractual work in disaster resilience. This qualitative study employs a narrative research design, using open-ended, semi-structured interviews with seven auxiliary staff members at Miriam College High School. It aims to identify the natural disaster assistance they receive, examine the financial and physiological vulnerabilities they face during typhoons, and explore how contractual work influences their resilience and recovery. The findings indicate that typhoons significantly reduce the productivity of contractual workers, thus affecting their capacity to fulfill financial obligations and provide for their families\u27 needs. This study highlights the need for mitigation, prevention, and preparedness strategies to reduce human vulnerability and boost economic benefits

    Examining the Bioethanol Yield Potential of Varying Ratios of Jicama (Pachyrhizus erosus) and Footstool Palm (Saribus rotundifolius) Stalk

    This study aimed to examine the bioethanol yield potential of varying ratios of Jicama (J) and Footstool Palm Stalk (FPS). The prototype used a mixed feedstock approach and was developed using the Separate Hydrolysis and Fermentation (SHF) method to extract and ferment sugars to produce ethanol. The study measured bioethanol yields by employing a posttest-only controlled group design consisting of a negative control group and three experimental groups. The results demonstrated that Experimental 3 exhibited the highest average initial sugar yield (3.71g), while the Negative Control showed the lowest average initial sugar (1.5g), showing the high sugar potential of Experimental 3 FPS on sugar yields. However, in terms of yield, the negative control displayed the highest average (0.77), while Experimental 3 had the lowest average (0.35), but most groups demonstrated a relatively high bioethanol yield in comparison to previous bioethanol studies. Furthermore, a significant difference was found between the mean yields of the control and experimental groups (p-value = 0.018), while in group pairs, only the Negative Control and Experimental 3 had a significant difference (p-value = 0.013), and the other group pairs had insignificant differences. These results indicate that the study’s methodology caused FPS to inhibit fermentation, reducing bioethanol yield. The study highlights the significance of raw material selection and in-depth methodologies in maximizing the yield potential of mixed bioethanol feedstocks, offering insights for advancements in bioethanol production and the utilization of J and FPS as a potential sustainable energy source
