A Visual Analysis of SOGIE-themed Children\u27s Storybooks from Mulat Sulat
Children\u27s storybooks play a crucial role in fostering early awareness of sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE) and the realities of gender-based representation. Although previous studies have analyzed books through textual analysis, there remains a gap in the visual analysis of SOGIE-themed characters in Filipino children\u27s books. Therefore, this study focuses on the visual representation of the five storybooks published under the Mulat Sulat project in 2018. This research employed the first three levels of Rodriguez and Dimitrova’s (2011) visual framing framework to analyze the depiction of characters through the denotative, stylistic-semiotic, and connotative levels. Additionally, this study utilized Bisht’s (2020) coding template to systematically develop themes and examine how these visual representations shape perceptions of identity. For the denotative level, the analysis shows that male and female characters are visually portrayed through blue and pink colors, respectively, while non-conforming characters were assigned colors, clothing, and accessories that are usually associated with opposite genders, implying an expansion of societal expectations for gender expression. For the stylistic-semiotic level, illustrators utilized positioning to indicate the isolation of non-conforming characters. The connotative level signified defiance of gender stereotypes through symbols such as a closet, a rainbow, and butterflies. While these storybooks challenge gender stereotypes by offering inclusive portrayals of non-conforming characters, the reinforcement of traditional gender norms is still dominant in these stories. Future studies may consider applying Rodriguez and Dimitrova’s (2011) fourth level of visual framing to analyze how ideological representations in SOGIE-themed children’s storybooks reflect broader societal and cultural implications
Discrimination and Coping Strategies of Baguio\u27s Visually Impaired Massage Therapists
The rise of inclusive employment and open mindedness brought opportunities to earn a living for the visually impaired workers. However, progress comes with challenges and discrimination, which are things that no disabled worker can escape from. This paper explores the experience of visually impaired massage therapists against discrimination and how they form coping strategies to deal with it. By conducting in-depth interviews and analyzing their answers through phenomenological research design and selected 12 participants from different massage centers in Baguio City by utilizing the method of purposive sampling. The paper delves into the roles of discrimination and the challenges it poses as a mode of shared experience in the workforce between each massage center. Findings highlight that their coping mechanisms to deal with rude remarks such as questioning their skills and credibility as massage therapists are dealt with through suggesting better services, staying strong and silent, and finding solace through religion. Moreover, these findings underscores the importance of fostering a more inclusive and respectful workplace, by implicating policies for the safety of the employees. The study concludes with the need to raise awareness and foster an inclusive work environment to ensure that they are respected and protected in their workplace
Evaluating the Mechanical Performance of Eco-Fiberboards Made from Varying Ratios of Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and Laundry Lint Microfibers
This study explored the viability of hybrid eco-fiberboards as an alternative to commercially available fiberboards. It aimed to evaluate the mechanical performance of water hyacinth (WH) and laundry lint (LL) microfibers, bound within a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix to create a sustainable fiberboard. Three experimental groups with varying fiber ratios were tested for tensile and flexural strength. The results were then compared to medium-density commercial fiberboards (Positive Control), which served as a benchmark. The flexural test showed that the experimental group with the highest LL content had a maximum strength of 35.13 MPa, comparable to the control group, indicating that more LL fibers may have increased stiffness. However, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) showed significant differences in tensile strength as the experimental groups performed lower than the control group, probably due to air pockets in the specimens. Rejection of the null hypothesis for tensile strength indicates that the experimental groups did not perform equally to commercial fiberboards under tension. These findings show that hybrid composites have potential for non-load bearing applications, while simultaneously providing a sustainable way of recycling LL and managing the WH overgrowth. However, it also highlights more refinement in composite creation to improve tensile performance and contribute to a broader use in construction and manufacturing. A posttest-only design was implemented in this study to assess the material properties of the specimen ratios, and Tukey’s HSD was used to determine pairwise comparisons between groups after a significant ANOVA result

Teachers\u27 translanguaging beliefs and practices: The case of selected schools in the province of Romblon
Translanguaging is a recent phenomenon that refers to the simultaneous use of multiple languages when communicating and facilitating comprehension (Canagarajah, 2011 & Garcia, 2009). This study is an exploration of its occurrence in the two elementary schools in the Province of Romblon wherein some teachers use multilingual teaching for their learners’ academic advantage. Following a qualitative and case study design, the pedagogical functions of translanguaging and how it aided teachers in discussing English and Mathematics content in the intermediate grades were determined through classroom ethnography, video recordings, thematic analysis, and stimulated-recall interview. Findings identified several functions of translanguaging which were categorized into different macro and micro themes. Results also established that the espoused beliefs and cognition of the participants correspond to their translanguaging practices which then became their ultimate resource for facilitating effective learning. In conclusion, the prevalence of translanguaging in the classes of the four teacher-participants attested its contingency as a classroom pedagogy amid the existing institutional ‘no-shift’ policy. Apparently, the participants’ personal perceptions as regards the benefits of translanguaging influenced their pedagogical decisions as they made alternative shifts to their teaching practices. Thus, their personal stance about teaching breaks the bounds of monoglossic ideation that control their learners’ autonomy to access their linguistic repertoires at their disposal. The study recommends to basic education practitioners the normalization of translanguaging as a pedagogy by designing a classroom space that allows learners to utilize their language resources whenever possible to enhance learning competencies and motivated attitudes towards language and mathematics education.

The Comparison Between the Work-Life Balance of Nurses in Private Hospitals and Public Hospitals
Nurses in the Philippines face demanding work hours, often leading to burnout, workforce shortage, and migration. While prior studies have explored work-life balance in either public or private hospital settings, limited research has investigated how institutional context influences work-life balance outcomes. This study aimed to assess the work-life balance among nurses employed in private and public hospitals and determine whether a significant difference exists between the two groups. A total of 60 registered nurses with at least one year of working experience participated, with 30 respondents from each hospital type in Cabuyao, Laguna. Data were collected using an adapted questionnaire from Govindsamy (2018), covering five categories: well-being, work-arrangements, organizational support, dependent care responsibilities, and social support network, measured on a 5-point Likert scale. The Independent Sample T-Test revealed a statistically significant difference in work-life balance score, with public hospital nurses reporting a better work-life balance with a mean of 2.08 compared to their private hospital counterparts with a mean of 2.43. These findings therefore conclude that nurses in public hospitals experience a better work-life balance compared to those working in private hospitals, highlighting the impact of institutional context and emphasizing the need for improved policies and support systems within private healthcare environments
Deconstructing Romance: A Content Analysis on Benevolent Sexism in Filipino Contemporary Romance Films
The present study aimed to examine benevolent sexism in Filipino contemporary romance films, addressing a significant gap in the literature on gender dynamics in Filipino cinema. Employing thematic analysis, the research pursued three primary objectives: (1) defining and identifying benevolent sexism, (2) exploring how male and female characters either challenge or reinforce such sexism, and (3) analyzing the influence of cultural norms and societal expectations on these portrayals. By analyzing prominent films like The Hows of Us, My Ex and Whys, and Rewind, the study revealed that relational feminine norms are often exploited in romantic relationships, perpetuating benevolent sexism. /= / \u3e/= / \u3e/= / \u3e/= / \u3eBenevolent sexism, defined as the idealization of traditional feminine roles, such as caregiving, emotional support, and deference to male authority, was frequently emphasized and romanticized within these films. The study found that such sexism is predominantly perpetuated in male and female character interactions and is rarely challenged. It highlighted how cultural norms contribute to the perpetuation of benevolent sexism, with deviations from traditional gender norms serving as rare challenges. This research calls for further studies to deepen understanding of gender dynamics and benevolent sexism in Filipino media representations
