The Fiore
On July 19, 2024, The Fiore was conceptualized with the mission to promote ocean waste awareness through recycled HDPE barrette clips. Formed as a sole proprietorship, the business ensures legal compliance through registration with the BIR, DTI, and the local government. Its current development stage involves product diversification through a recycled HDPE mirror keychain, sustaining its advocacy for sustainability. Relatively, trademark and copyright registration are being considered to be secured in the future. Positioned in the sustainable hair accessories industry, The Fiore primarily targets DLSU students and environmentally aware consumers. Its competitors are those selling similar types of products, specifically accessories from online retailers. Thus, to differentiate itself in the market, the business uses recycled HDPE plastic, an uncommon material in the hair accessories industry. Moreover, the business exerts marketing efforts by focusing on digital platforms, highlighting socio-cultural posts, and product promotion. To increase relevance, The Fiore also participates in university-led events like ABM bazaars. Currently, the management involves a CEO, COO, CFO, and CMO, contributing different expertise in various areas. The team is supported by a research advisor, enhancing product development and venture credibility. The business relies on equity-based financing. An initial capital of ₱5,475, contributed by the founding team, funded early-stage operations. As the business scales, an additional ₱15,000 in internal funding will be allocated to expand production and enhance marketing. Since all funds originated from internal equity, returns will be proportionally distributed among the founding contributors

Harnessing microbial potential: The role of micrococcus luteus and proteus vulgaris in high-density polyethylene degradation
Plastic pollution endangers ecosystems and human health globally, with High-density polyethylene (HDPE) as a major contributor. This study investigated the biodegradation using microorganisms of HDPE through a microbial process. Through a comprehensive literature review, Micrococcus luteus and Proteus vulgaris were identified as potential HDPE-degrading species and were selected for evaluation. Both strains exhibited growth using HDPE as the sole carbon source. By day 4, M. luteus achieved a cell density of 6.0 x 108 cells while P. vulgaris reached approximately 9.0 x 108 cells, indicating potential plastic degradation capacity. Results showed that P. vulgaris had the highest average weight loss at 3.33 ± 2.89, while M. luteus had an average of 1.38% ± 6.04. The consortium consisting of M. luteus and P. vulgaris exhibited lower weight loss averages, suggesting that degradation is more effective in individual cultures. However, the differences in the plastic degradation experiment were found statistically insignificant. A Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the surfaces of M. luteus and P. vulgaris showed unevenness, and pits, in contrast to the negative control. P. vulgaris possesses enzymes involved in plastic degradation such as catalase-peroxidase and lipase, while M. luteus possesses laccase. Both species degraded HDPE, with P. vulgaris having relatively higher efficiency in both carbon utilization and weight reduction. Future research should optimize growth conditions to enhance bacterial and enzymatic activity.

Medical Populism and Epistemic Rights
Medical populism, a performance-based political style that orchestrates antagonistic relations between the people and medical establishments, has served as a concept for analyzing the politicization of healthcare. With its four fundamental features, that is, invoking knowledge claims contrary to medical experts’ advice, simplifying discourse, dramatizing responses to public health crises, and forging divisions, medical populism compromises our access to accurate medical or public health information. Populist leaders abuse their epistemic authority and betray public trust when they propagate false information, medical or otherwise. And insofar as accurate medical or public health information is an epistemic good that we have the right to access, and not having so harms us precisely as knowers, we claim that medical populism violates our epistemic rights
Sustainability Accounting Teaching Practices of Accountancy Instructors: An In-Depth Case Study of a Private Institution in Pasay City
Sustainability Accounting (SA) is at the forefront of modern financial discourse with connection to the Sustainable Development Goals 4, 8, and 12. In the Philippines, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) mandated publicly listed companies to include sustainability reporting in their disclosures. As future frontrunners of the profession, upcoming accountants (UA) must possess a comprehensive understanding of SA to effectively adapt to its emerging global prominence. This in-depth case study explores teaching practices of selected accounting instructors (AI) in Pasay City. Guided by the Interdisciplinary Learning Environment framework, the study used semi-structured interview and content analysis of instructional materials to investigate teaching practices of instructors. Three core themes emerged: Interdisciplinary Learning Design, Instructor Role and Design Leadership, and Cross-Disciplinary Thinking Techniques. Results show that sustainability concepts such as the corporate social responsibility, ethical reasoning, and non-financial disclosures were embedded across both accounting and business-oriented subjects. Interactive methods, including case studies, simulations, and project-based exercises, were employed to cultivate critical thinking, analytical skills, and professional skepticism. Despite facing challenges such as students’ initial narrow perceptions of accounting as purely financial and the need for continual curricular updates, the instructors’ strategies effectively merged traditional accounting content with emerging sustainability requirements. This study affirms the role of instructors as curriculum designers and sustainability champions. It concludes by recommending experiential methods, curriculum development, and continuous faculty training to further institutionalize sustainability accounting education and advance Sustainable Development Goals 4, 8, and 12
Understanding cultural space in disaster and heritage management framework: An analysis of stakeholder collaboration in pre-and post-crisis response in protecting historical churches in the Philippines
Disasters pose a threat to the preservation of cultural heritage worldwide. In this research, the discussion provides a comprehensive study on disaster and heritage protection in the Philippines, emphasizing the strategies, challenges, and opportunities. Protecting heritage, particularly the historical churches, is essential to safeguarding the Philippines\u27 collective history and cultural identity. This paper employs a multidisciplinary approach, drawing upon insights from disaster and heritage studies. It synthesizes existing literature, case studies, and expert interviews to shed light on the various facets of disaster and heritage protection. This study argues that critical disaster and heritage protection strategies encompass proactive and reactive measures. The proactive measures include knowledge production on the reality of disaster in the Philippines, crisis preparedness, and disaster-resilient heritage site programs. These strategies emphasize the importance of understanding the vulnerability of heritage assets to various disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. Reactive measures involve post-disaster response and recovery, which includes emergency stabilization, salvage operations, and long-term restoration efforts. Collaboration between heritage experts, disaster management agencies, and local communities is crucial to developing holistic approaches considering heritage preservation and disaster resilience. Raising public awareness about the importance of heritage protection and disaster preparedness is essential to a comprehensive strategy. This research underscores the urgent need for a coordinated disaster and heritage protection approach. It highlights the significance of knowledge dissemination and capacity-building among stakeholders to preserve our shared heritage for future generations. The research findings offer a foundation for policymakers, heritage practitioners, and the broader community to address complex challenges and seize disaster and heritage protection opportunities
