    Immigrant Inequities in Uninsurance and Postpartum Medicaid Extension: A Quasi-Experimental Study in New York City, 2016–2021

    Objectives. To determine if de facto postpartum Medicaid extension during the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) reduced immigrant versus US-born inequities in uninsurance. Methods. We assessed self-reported uninsurance at 2 to 6 months postpartum among people with Medicaid-paid births using the New York City Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), comparing immigrant and US-born people. We created a pre-FFCRA cohort of 2611 births from 2016 to 2019 and a post-FFCRA implementation cohort of 1197 births from 2020 to 2021. We calculated risk differences using log binomial regression. Results. Self-reported postpartum uninsurance among immigrants decreased from 13.6% to 9.3% after FFCRA (adjusted risk difference = -4.9%; 95% confidence interval = -7.8%, -2.0%). Immigrant versus US-born inequities in postpartum uninsurance decreased except among Hispanic birthing people, among whom 1 in 6 reported they were uninsured during FFCRA, despite continued eligibility. Conclusions. De facto postpartum Medicaid extension decreased immigrant inequities in insurance coverage, but Hispanic immigrants may have been unaware of continued coverage. Public Health Implications. Postpartum Medicaid extension policies that are inclusive of all immigrants may decrease inequities, but community-integrated implementation is needed to raise awareness of coverage and advance postpartum maternal health equity.VoRSUNY DownstateEpidemiology and BiostatisticsN/

    This project explores the impact that gaming has on players' mental and emotional well-being. Research conducted strongly validates the argument that video games do benefit emotional and mental well-being by exposing gamers to scenarios that mirror real-world situations, establishing and reinforcing player emotional awareness, regulation, and mental health. However, mainstream media highlight negative narratives that have not been confirmed by credible sources. The benefits and reality of gaming are often overshadowed because access to reputable sources discussing the matter is difficult to find or comprehend. Digital artifacts (infographics) were developed to provide a resource that is accessible and easy to understand. Various academic journals, medical journals, case studies, and therapeutic materials were consulted to achieve this. Specific attention was given to the proper design principles, techniques, and publication of these resources. Clearly, conversations about the impact of gaming are needed.     This study examines the design, development, and self-publication of two interactive children’s books intended to promote early learning, creativity, and reduced screen time for children ages 5–8. Drawing from research on cognitive development, visual information design, and storytelling techniques, the project produced Leo’s Adventure to Neverland and Exploring Our Solar System: Volume 1. Both books were created using principles of clear visual hierarchy, age-appropriate language, and interactive engagement through coloring activities. The project focused heavily on the integration of educational content with creative design strategies and explored the real-world challenges of marketing and distributing self published educational materials. Practical outcomes highlighted the importance of strong book design, user-centered storytelling, and proactive audience engagement for visibility and adoption.     This capstone project uses information design to properly present a large amount of information to the user through the development of a website. Focusing on visualization, this website presents information collected from Steam and presents it in an easily understandable manner. Various categories are represented, each one focusing on different topics that Steam provides through both its website and desktop application. This website was developed through HTML, CSS, JavaScript and two different frameworks. The Bootstrap framework was used to implement responsive design, and the Chart.js framework was used for the creation of charts and tables.     Deciphering the role of R-loop/RNA:DNA hybrids in tumor biology: detection, quantification and clinical relevance

    R-loops/RNA:DNA hybrids (RDHs) are thermodynamically stable nucleic acid structure that are dynamically abundant in the human genome and have been linked to numerous physiological and pathological conditions. Given their regulatory significance, precise control of R-loops is crucial. However, since RDHs are difficult to detect accurately, the diagnostic and prognostic capability of RDHs have not been evaluated yet. Our study focuses on addressing this gap. We utilized cancer and non-cancer cell lines as well as tissues to optimize accurate detection of R-loop using RNase III and H enzymes. Moreover, we employed immunohistochemistry (IHC) to detect RDHs in malignant and non-malignant tissues, we showed that RDHs is associated with tumor grades, stages in different cancer types. The number of RDH enriched/specific sites (RDH-S) and RDH-S density in aggressive/advanced breast cancer tissues were significantly higher than those in low-aggressive tumors. In contrast to luminal A molecular subtype, luminal B, basal, and HER2-positive tumor cells often exhibit a larger number of RDH-S nuclei and a moderate to high nucleus RDH-S density. Quantification of the RDH-S density data revealed significant associations with clinical stages, histological grades, cell proliferation status, and lymphocyte infiltration varying across tumor types and subtypes. Furthermore, we observed a rightward shift in the nuclear RDH-S density distribution in aggressive or/and advanced cancer variants compared to the cytoplasmic RDH density distribution, highlighting RDH heterogeneity and its association with aggressiveness of cancer. Importantly, we demonstrate that the number of RDH-S positive cells, RDH-S density distribution and their sensitivity towards RNase treatment can further stratify the heterogenous histological grade 2 of breast cancer into more homogenous subgroups. Thus, the RDH/R-loop mapping and their distribution patterns in cell and tissue samples represent a prospective biomarker capable of improving cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.NAUpstate Medical UniversityBiochemistry & Molecular BiologyPhDKuznetsov, Vladimi

    Competition between plants leads to limited resources, which may force a survival of the fittest situation. Wisconsin Fast Plants, Brassica rapa, have multiple different genotypes that influence how they grow. We measured various growth parameters, such as daily height, in two genotypes related to energy acquisition - Polycot and Yellow-Green - to determine if the genotype influenced the response to competition.
