Adressing the Negative Stigma Surrounding Addiction
A thesis essay confronting the stereotypes and sociological ideology that traps addicts in their cycle. A Reflection Of Self Through Educational And Personal Experiences: A Critical Reflection
In this critical reflection, I trace my journey of self-discovery through the lens of my educational, professional, and creative experiences – deeply rooted in a heartfelt appreciation for community. From navigating the challenges of dental hygiene school to healing through yoga, mindfulness, and the arts, I reflect on how my growth has been shaped by the people, spaces, and shared moments that have held me. Community has not only been a source of strength but a constant reminder of why I create, teach, and serve. Through mentoring youth, collaborating with underserved groups, and holding space for collective healing, I've learned that transformation does not happen in isolation. I am deeply grateful for every connection that has inspired resilience, creativity, and purpose in me. This reflection is both a personal testimony and a tribute to the healing power of community. It is written with the hope of inspiring others to appreciate their own stories and the relationships that sustain them.Purchase College SUNYLiberal StudiesBachelor of ArtsManzo, Kerr
The Things You Forgot to Tell Me
How does neglect affect you? How does it shape your self image? Esteem? Respect? Why are you acting the way you are right now? How do my mother's choices make me feel as a spouse? I've sought to answer these questions through this body of thesis work, which explores surfaces and what lies beneath.Purchase College SUNYPainting and DrawingBachelor of Fine ArtsWagner, Virgini
Beyond Genre: The Modifying Nature of Film Noir in Modern Storytelling
This project explores how film noir, traditionally rooted in 1940s cinema, has transformed past the conventions of a genre into a phenomenon that both adapts to and reshapes the media it inhabits. Rather than confined to trench coats and fedoras, noir evolves through its migration into television, video games, streaming platforms, and virtual reality. This phenomenon retains its core themes of moral ambiguity, existentialism, and institutional mistrust while reconfiguring narrative structure and aesthetic form. The paper shows how noir's key themes and fatalistic worldview enrich serialized storytelling and deepen character introspection through series like True Detective, The Sopranos, Batman: The Animated Series, and Dexter: Original Sin. Simultaneously, video games such as L.A. Noire, Max Payne, and Red Dead Redemption 2 embody noir's existentialist tone and themes and expand them through interactivity, giving players direct engagement with moral choices and consequences. This study argues that noir is not just a film genre of the 40s and 50s; it is an anomaly that actively modifies the formats it enters, shaping narrative conventions, emotional affect, and audience expectations. As technologies like VR and AI emerge, noir offers a critical lens through which contemporary anxieties, identities, and systems are explored. While also offering a critique of the technological advancements it will use in the future.Purchase College SUNYCinema and Television StudiesBachelor of ArtsHolmes, Natha
Little Dream Soup – The Process of Indie Gamedev
This paper chronicles the development of Little Dream Soup. In this game the user plays as a mouse that lives in a cabin-stump in the woods, the player must forage and farm for ingredients to make soup, gaze at the stars, and dream of one day reaching the cheese moon. A game like this could take years to develop. This game is a stepping stone to fully releasing the game with a playable demo.
Struggles, successes, inspiration, research and a little insanity are all encapsulated in this document. This project uses Unity as the game engine, Blender for 3D asset creation, Procreate and the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) for 2D asset creation, Waveform for audio manipulation, and C# for the coding language.Purchase College SUNYMathematics & Computer ScienceBachelor of ArtsTusman, Le

Unconscious arousal to masked faces in socially anxious participants
This study investigates whether fear can be triggered unconsciously in highly socially anxious individuals. There were 20 socially anxious participants and 19 non-anxious controls who were sorted based on their ranking in the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) and a brief diagnostic interview for social anxiety disorder (SAD). Participants were shown presentations of masked and visible disgusted and contented faces. Arousal was measured as skin conductance responses (SCRs), which were collected throughout the experiment. The data indicated that, regardless of masking, socially anxious participants showed significantly higher arousal toward disgusted than contented faces. Meanwhile, the non-socially anxious participants only displayed significant arousal toward disgusted faces when they were visible.Purchase College SUNYPsychologyBachelor of ArtsSiegel, Pau
The Relevance and Importance of Mental Health Representation in Video Games
For artists, directors, writers, and creators, capturing and representing the human experience is a fundamental goal. Being able to find a representation of oneself in visual art, books, films, or any other medium resonates with people; the shared experience creates empathy and understanding. In this paper, I explore the positive and negative representations of mental health in video games. There is an importance in showing these representations in media, as without them, how are we meant to understand and connect with others' perspectives, cultures, and lives? It is realistic to see oneself in media, where you can see yourself in a story or character, which can make one feel empowered. The research on this topic comes together in my senior showcase installation, centered on a game I created called WESTBROOKE. The game follows a college student navigating their life, friendships, courses, and their environment while reflecting on the positive and negative treatment of those with mental health conditions, and demonstrates the possibilities for the future representation of mental health in videogames. While there can always be improvements made, starting somewhere small can mean a great deal.Purchase College SUNYNew MediaBachelor of ArtsTusman, Le
