    Dynamic frequency-gated fourier neural operators: architecture, principles, and applications

    Solving parametric partial differential equations (PDEs) has historically been an area of research focused on identifying computationally efficient methods. Because analytic solutions are often impractical, numerical solvers have traditionally been used to approximate these functions. However, with the rise of deep learning, data-driven methods are now widely used and can learn the underlying PDE operators that govern complex fluid mechanics [1, 2]. In this thesis, we propose a dynamic adaptive Fourier neural operator (DA-FNO) that employs frequency gating as a masking mechanism to modulate spectral content directly in the frequency domain. The prevailing “one-size-fits-all” treatment of Fourier modes in the original FNO [3] limits dynamism when certain instances demand finer spectral focus. By learning a frequency gate that controls both the count of modes and their granularity—per quadrant, per sample—within each Fourier layer, the model bypasses costly convolutions on irrelevant modes, yielding a more efficient and adaptive architecture.     Development of IC-based temperature monitor with spaciotemporal resolution

    Excessive self-heating in integrated circuits (ICs) is a major barrier to performance and reliability within the semiconductor industry and necessitates innovation in thermal management. Effective thermal management is critical, but experimental evaluation of cooling solutions, especially hotspot mitigation, are limited due to challenges in acquiring accurate spatiotemporal temperature data. This work presents an in-line spatial and temporal temperature mapping system designed to interface directly between an IC and its cooling device, consisting of a dense array of 64 aluminum resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) sensors integrated within an automated measurement system. The RTD array was successfully fabricated using a single-layer lift-off process on an oxide-wafer substrate. An automated measurement system utilizing GPIB instruments and multiplexing for four-point measurements was developed for real-time data acquisition and calibration. Calibration performed on 28 functional sensors demonstrated high linearity with an average measured temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 1730 ppm/ºC. In-situ measurements successfully demonstrated the capability to resolve ambient temperature, thermal transients, and non-uniform thermal gradients, providing necessary experimental data for thermal characterization. During non-uniform heating, spatial temperature gradients could be resolved within 0.1 °. This work validates the design, fabrication, and characterization of an aluminum RTD sensor array system for in-situ spatiotemporal temperature mapping, contributing to the experimental evaluation of IC thermal management solutions.     Same Peak, Different Birds? An Exploratory Analysis of Long-Term Avian Community Monitoring on Mount Mansfield, Vermont

    High-elevation bird communities are one of the groups most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, but there are still few long-term studies tracking demographic shifts within them. One potential outcome of climate change is that traditionally lower-elevation species may encroach upslope, competing with or replacing high-elevation species over time. Most analyses of elevational shifts have relied on passive surveys (e.g., point count data), which can detect species presence but cannot disentangle the finer-scale demographic processes at play. Since 1992, The Vermont Center for Ecostudies has been banding and monitoring high-elevation birds on the ridgeline (1100-1250 m) of Mount Mansfield, VT. We will present an exploratory analysis of these data investigating trends in capture rates of breeding females and juveniles for different species over the years. This analysis will provide new insight into community turnover in this habitat to complement passive surveys.     Influence of Fire Disturbance on Vegetation Structure and The Resulting Influence of This Disturbance on Wildlife Habitat Suitability

    Disturbance regimes, such as fire, play a crucial role in shaping the structure, dynamics, and biodiversity of ecosystems by influencing species interactions, habitat variation, and ecosystem regeneration. This study investigates the ecological impacts of wildfire disturbances on forest structure and wildlife dynamics at the Altona Flat Rock, a globally rare sandstone pavement jack pine (Pinus banksiana) barrens in northeastern New York. We examined how time since disturbance influences forest structure by assessing attributes such as tree height, canopy closure, density, basal area, and understory composition across a chronosequence of disturbances. Our findings revealed minimal variation in forest structure among stands of different ages, with high homogeneity across the landscape. Within jack pine origin stands, only standing dead density and jack pine density showed significant differences. Tree age analysis indicated that fire severity and topographic complexity influenced tree survival and establishment, with most jack pine trees establishing immediately after the last major fire. In addition to assessing forest structure, we investigated the effects of the 2018 fire on wildlife dynamics in the area. Using a network of 20 camera traps and vegetation surveys at 60 plot locations, we monitored wildlife presence and habitat conditions, focusing on predator-prey dynamics and the influence of post-fire habitat characteristics. Our results demonstrated that wildlife species responded differently to post-fire conditions. Predators, such as coyotes (Canis latrans), exhibited increased activity in recently burned areas, benefiting from improved visibility, while herbivores like white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) avoided these areas due to reduced cover. Occupancy modeling showed that species occupancy was not significantly influenced by forest structure, burn year, or season, though diel activity patterns revealed high overlap between coyotes and deer, suggesting complex predator-prey interactions in post-fire environments. Together, these findings emphasize the importance of disturbance-driven habitat heterogeneity in maintaining biodiversity.     Parasocial relationships are one-sided emotional bonds that form between individuals and media figures. (Horton and Wohl, 1956). In this paper, I examine NieR: Automata, a Japanese Role-Playing Game released in 2017, with respect to the development of parasociality using a three-layered analysis shown in three stages: in-game character attachments, parasocial engagement in fandom spaces, and a parasocial shift to creators and voice actors. Through this analysis, I utilize NieR: Automata as a case study to illustrate how interactive media, such as video games, can facilitate parasocial bonds.     2020 Vision: Understanding the effect of COVID on youth nonprofit music programs in NYC

    The COVID-19 pandemic had world-changing effects with no sector of society spared. The focus of this work is to understand the real-time responses in the art sector to COVID-19, specifically in two non-profit youth music programs in New York City. The Harmony Program, annually serves 3,000 students with musical education. The Young People's Chorus with 17,000 children served since its inception in 1988. Financial sustainability, artistic vitality, and recognized public value are key values for successful arts organizations as recommended by the National Endowment for the Arts. Qualitative interviews with executives at the Harmony Program and YPC coupled with in depth analysis of each organization's non-profit 990 filings highlights strategies used to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.     Effects of race and gender on perceptions of fitness

    Previous research has shown that social perceptions of physical appearance are influenced by stereotypes linked to both race and gender. This study investigates how intersecting identities affect judgments of fitness, gender, and race, focusing on categorizing individuals based on perceived physicality. We predict that Black individuals will be perceived as more physically fit than White individuals based on scenario ratings and positive attribute evaluations. We also hypothesize that higher Social Appearance Anxiety (SAA) scores will be associated with lower ratings of positive attributes. In other words, participants who report greater anxiety about how they appear to others will be more likely to evaluate others less favorably on attributes such as physical fitness, strength, and overall positivity. Lastly, we predicted that participants would be more likely to assume the person described in each scenario was Black rather than White.Although results indicated that social appearance anxiety was not strongly associated with perceptions of favorable qualities, the scenarios themselves significantly influenced participants - ratings of positive attributes such as discipline, approachability, and competence. By examining these biases, we aimed to explore how social contexts reinforce stereotypes related to strength, size, and dominance. Understanding these dynamics can shed light on the broader implications of intersectional stereotypes in shaping social judgments and contribute to more inclusive representations within fitness and health-related contexts.
