Spreading Wings: an essay on love and acceptance / GERYON

Writings and findings on the subject of love, and how to make the steps down the path of true love. Dramatics within the words; auto-ethnographic creative writings and analytical research on how love has been exploited throughout the course of time and history. How this abuse of power subverted minds to the feeling of lovelessness. By knowing of love's truest forms, we can know peace. GERYON reflects the story of Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson to the stage. A red boy who felt loveless, but only wanted to know of love. Love is beautiful but it is shamed in many ways. When you listen to Geryon's story, there's the possibility you may relate to him. When you are loved, you are heard; I promise that you deserve love.Purchase College SUNYTheatre and PerformanceBachelor of ArtsMiles, William B

Can Adolescent Girls' Self-esteem be Linked to Body Representation in Physical Education?: A Synthesis Project

Purpose: The purpose of this synthesis project is to review the literature on the impact of body representation in physical education on adolescent girls’ self-esteem. To guide the purpose of this project, the following questions are used; (a) adolescent girls who express low self-esteem due to body representation within physical education, and (b) articles that were peer reviewed, full-text and published within the last ten years. Findings: Based on the articles, it was found that adolescent girls have lower self-esteem than boys. It is supporting that adolescent girls’ body image can be influenced not only by social media but also within an education setting through visuals, vocabulary, and specific contents. Also found was that when adolescent girls participate in fitness and body positivity focused activities, their self-esteem improves along with their body image.SUNY BrockportDepartment of Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Educatio

Targeted Instructional Practices to Enhance ELL Performance on the NYS English Language Arts Regents

English Language Learners (ELLs) face significant challenges on the New York State English Language Arts (ELA) Regents Exam, a high-stakes assessment that is often a barrier to graduation. This capstone project explores how educators can better support ELLs in meeting the demands of the Regents through a three-part professional development (PD) series. The PD sessions focused on data analysis, collaborative reflection, and strategy refinement, enabling teachers to identify key reasons why ELLs struggle. Some of the main issues come from vocabulary demands, cultural disconnect, test anxiety, and limited relatability of exam content. Findings reveal that ELLs disproportionately underperform on the ELA Regents, directly impacting their ability to graduate on time. Through targeted instructional support and increased awareness, teachers can implement scaffolding techniques, culturally responsive practices, and test-taking strategies to mitigate these challenges. This project underscores the importance of empowering educators with tools and insights to foster more equitable outcomes for multilingual learners.SUNY BrockportDepartment of Education and Human Developmen

Language, Culture, and Learning: Supporting Multilingual Learners

This capstone project examines Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory as the main framework for understanding content-area instruction for multilingual learners (MLs). Central constructs such as scaffolding, language as a cultural tool, and social interaction within cultural contexts are explored to understand how they facilitate cognitive development, academic engagement, and equitable learning outcomes. The literature indicates that scaffolding enables MLs to operate within their zone of proximal development, gradually fostering independence through guided support. Language functions not only as a means of communication, but also as a cognitive and cultural resource that mediates learning, with students’ first language (L1) serving as a bridge to acquiring a second language (L2). Social interaction and culturally responsive teaching practices further enhance learning by validating students’ linguistic and cultural identities, promoting participation, and encouraging collaborative knowledge construction. Through synthesis of recent peer-reviewed research, this study highlights instructional strategies that integrate sociocultural principles to support MLs in K-12 classrooms. The findings underscore the importance of recognizing multilingualism as an asset and designing learning environments that leverage students’ full linguistic and cultural repertoires. By connecting theory to practice, this project provides educators with evidence-based strategies and guidance for teaching multilingual learners.SUNY BrockportDepartment of Education and Human Developmen
