The Reality of International Research Ethics Policies in a Post-Covid World
Technological advances and internet proliferation have spurred opportunities for remote research, highlighted during the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, local research ethics policies have lagged, stymying participation in global research initiatives. As prior research has shown the state of a cohesive international ethics protocol has caused issues in multiple disciplines before the pandemic. In the scope of the social sciences, the pandemic opened up a huge opportunity: online research where the gap in cross-cultural research could be bridged is now left in a state of limbo. Thus far no literature has established an international online research protocol. This study aims to describe the state of research ethics policies of social science research by outside investigators using secondary data from universities, governments, and ethics commissions. We aim to examine fees, permits, and ethics approval processes.Criminal JusticePsychological SciencesKoen, MarthinusRhodes, The
The Eye of the Canary: Analyzing José Martí's Early Life Through Cuban Cinema
This paper analyzes The Eye of the Canary (2010), a Cuban film directed by Fernando Pérez Valdés, which portrays the childhood and adolescence of Cuba's national hero, José Julián Martí Pérez. Through a cinematic lens, I will delve into how the director's audiovisual techniques, such as melancholic aesthetics and intertextual references to Martí's writings, create a nuanced view of Martí's early life.Modern Languages and LiteraturesRojo, Rosel

UFLI Foundations Literacy Assessment and Intervention
This project was focused on providing students with literacy instruction using UFLI Foundations, a reading intervention program. UFLI is an explicit and systematic phonics curriculum that aims to support students by receiving instruction in phonics based on their reading needs. Students were assessed using multiple measures to determine areas of targeted intervention. This intervention targeted students' understanding of final spelling patterns and their ability to read multisyllabic words. UFLI Foundations is a tier 2 intervention and was delivered in small groups to benefit students learning.Curriculum and InstructionMazzye, Doree
UFLI Foundations Literacy Assessments and Intervention
This project was designed to implement an effective reading program as a tier two intervention for students testing below grade level in reading and writing. This program provides explicit and systematic phonics instruction. It regularly progress monitors students to see if students are demonstrating growth. Students are assessed using four different assessments to see where in the UFLI scope and sequence they should begin their reading instruction, how the student groups are formed, and how much growth the student achieved. After implementing 20 UFLI lessons, I administered post tests to measure my student’s growth and determine if UFLI is the correct intervention for my student.Curriculum and InstructionMazzye, Doree

From Designs to Discrimination in a Digital World
This project explores the portrayal of female characters in video games, specifically addressing the issues of sexualization and objectification. Over the years, the design of many female characters has been largely influenced by male-driven stereotypes, often focusing on physical appearance rather than depth of character. This study investigates how these portrayals impact both male and female players, exploring the ways they shape perceptions of gender roles and contribute to the normalization of harmful stereotypes in gaming culture. Through a detailed analysis of games like Stellar Blade and Marathon, the project examines the ongoing resistance to change in character designs and the industry's slow progress toward more realistic and respectful representations of women. Furthermore, the research discusses how these depictions can lead to negative real-world consequences, such as reinforcing toxic masculinity and discouraging female participation in gaming communities. This project highlights the need for more inclusive and thoughtful character designs in the future.Purchase College SUNYSociologyBachelor of ArtsKosut, Mari
Feeding the Image: A Sociological Inquiry into Media and Eating Disorders
My research dives into the depths of eating disorders and what causes them, as well as how they are portrayed in various movies and shows. Eating disorders are life threatening and all consuming disorders that take over every aspect of someone's life, which I break down in my research and analysis. Eating disorders are not caused by one thing and the complexity of these disorders needs to be further examined. The interconnection of various societal forces that contribute to eating disorders should be analyzed in order to prevent the perpetuation of these disorders.Purchase College SUNYSociologyBachelor of ArtsKosut, Mari
Association between social engagement, critical consciousness, and college satisfaction at Purchase College
This research aimed to determine whether there is a difference between students who are a part of cultural clubs on campus at SUNY Purchase College and students who do not attend these cultural clubs. This research was designed to help people understand how the cultural clubs on campus may influence on students' experience at SUNY Purchase College. The Diversity Satisfaction Scale and the Critical Consciousness Scale were used to measure how satisfied students are regarding the institution's approach towards diversity of students, faculty, and staff. The Critical Consciousness Scale was used to determine whether students who were part of cultural clubs had a higher sensitivity to social inequalities. The results of the study suggested that the students who were a part of the cultural clubs had lower satisfaction regarding diversity. There are no differences in critical consciousness scale between students in cultural clubs and those who were not involved in clubs; therefore, the hypothesis was not sustained. We hope the results from this research help future studies that examined the experiences of students in higher education.
