Book Review : Corpus Approaches to the Language of Sports (Texts, Media, Modalities)
Get PDFThe submitted work is a book review of Corpus Approaches to the Language of Sports: Texts, Media, Modalities edited by Marcus Callies and Magnus Levin. The volume brings together empirical studies that adopt corpus methods to examine language in a variety of genres and contexts of different types of sports. Structurally, it comprises an introductory chapter and ten empirical studies, where the introductory chapter (Chapter 1) lays down the theoretical and methodological context, while the following ten empirical studies (Chapter 2-11) are divided into three parts. Part one ‘Texts. Contrastive and comparative aspects of the phraseology of football match reports’ (Chapter 2-4) explores the phraseology of football reporting across different text types and languages by adopting a comparative/contrastive linguistic approach. Part two ‘Media. Expanding the scope of research to mew contexts of use’ (Chapter 5-8) extends the existing research to new media and the relatively downplayed sports discourse outside of football. The final part ‘Modalities. Multimodal studies’ (Chapter 9-11) addresses sports language from a multimodal perspective which has rarely been applied to the language of sports. On the whole, as the only book dealing with sports in the Corpus and Discourse series, the present volume makes a strong contribution to corpus linguistics and the application of corpus linguistic methods to the discourse and contexts of sports
English Teachers’ Techniques of Teaching Stories for Students: A Study of Secondary Level Schools of Nepal
Get PDFThis research work was conducted to find out techniques used by English language teachers in teaching short stories to the secondary school level students in Nepal. To achieve the research objectives, the researcher chosen a case study design. The data were analyzed on the basis of activities recorded during the class observation. In this regard, the researcher used judgmental non-random sampling procedure to select two English language teachers from two secondary schools in Banke district, Nepalgunj, Nepal. Further, 30 classes (15 classes of each teacher) were observed. Diary writing and observation checklists were used to collect data. After analyzing the data, it was found that teachers used student-centered teaching techniques i.e. interaction technique, discussion technique, problem solving technique and question answer technique to teach short stories

Get PDFResearch on epistemics in conversation has shown that various difficulties arise in conversation when there is no symmetry in knowledge, and how interlocutors navigate the asymmetries introduced by epistemic status and epistemic stance (cf. Heritage & Raymond, 2005). Yet, there is no empirical study which shows how these asymmetries are navigated between German native speakers (L1 speakers) and language learners (L2 speakers).The data presented in this paper entail examples where language learners of German are more knowledgeable (K+) about the target culture and native speakers are less knowledgeable (K-) about their own culture. It shows that there is an ongoing competition between L1 and L2 speakers, specifically between their status-based authority, which addresses what native speakers should know, given their status (Drew, 1991) and source-based authority, which deals with actual experience (Enfield, 2011)
English Subject Teachers’ Perceptions and Strategies in Managing Large Classes: A Case Study of Nepal
Get PDFThis research entitled “English Subject Teachers’ Perceptions and Strategies in Managing Large Classes (A Case Study of Nepal)” was conducted with the objectives of finding out English subject teachers' perceptions on managing large ELT classes and to find out the current strategies adopted by the teachers. For the research purpose, fifteen English subject teachers were selected from the five different higher secondary schools of Nepalgunj, Banke district, Nepal by using purposive, non- random sampling procedure. In addition, I observed of three classes of each teacher was done. I employed two types of tools; questionnaire and observation checklist for collecting data. The finding shows that most of the English subject teachers are well-aware to manage the large classes and they have to adopt elective approach while dealing in a large class of Nepal.

Service Learning Project in ELT: Connecting Classroom Experiences to Community
Get PDFAmong the mandated functions of a higher education institution includes community extension. This area is also being evaluated by accrediting bodies for the upgrade of academic standards or levels. Schools have different and similar ways on how they extend community services. However, the task itself may not be a slice of cake. There are certain elements, tools, and procedures to be observed by people who would be involved in the process itself. This is where the direction of this study emanated. Its main purpose is to describe and analyze the purpose of a particular service learning endeavor and how it connects classroom to community needs. The design of this paper is qualitative in nature. Moreover, the specific approach employed was ethnography. There were five participants involved in the study and the reflections of both the researcher and participants contributed to the development of the ideas leading to insights. In the selection of the participants, purposive sampling was used. The teachers are handling purposive communication, which is a general education course at college level. Two instruments (i.e. reflective essay and field observation) were used to collect textual data. Content analysis helped the researcher analyze and synthesize the data that were transformed into conclusions or insights. In concluding the study, the researcher found out how participants practice service learning project and with their critical reflections, a new definition of service learning was put into shape
The Significance of English Scientific Writing Proficiency for Publishing Purposes: The Case of Moroccan EFL PhD Students at the Euromed University of Fes
Get PDFThis study aspires to theoretically and empirically investigate the dearth of English scientific writing in the engineering PhD programs at the Euromed University of Fes. It must be noted that the entire absence of English in the curriculum of PhD programs unequivocally creates myriad challenges, mainly in the writing process. Doctoral students find themselves impotent to publish in indexed journals, be it a single-blind peer review or a double-blind peer review, due to the high demands of scientific writing proficiency and accuracy alongside the scrupulous treatment of data. In like manner, novice researchers lack expertise and oftentimes agonize about the writing task as their meta-cognitive skills need to be rejuvenated, revitalized, and rigorously fortified. To that end, the use of numerical data by means of questionnaire is highly estimated by researchers to vigorously help in unveiling the aforementioned challenges, while simultaneously systematically paving the way for context-specific recommendations to be made in order to alleviate some of the pressure that doctoral students undergo with respect to English scientific writing for the purpose of producing quality publishable materials
Emergency Remote Learning in Higher Education during COVID-19 Era: Students and Professors’ Experiences

As a result, this newfangled educational paradigm has changed the conception of teaching and learning from a rigid process to a novel environment where new rules and objectives are set. In the present context, this research paper is intended to discuss the contemporary educational prototype as an alternative to traditional face-to-face instruction in order to accomplish quality learning and rescue the academic year from a doomed failure. In this regard, this study relies on a quantitative and qualitative research analysis, based on questionnaires designated to teachers and students of the National School of Applied Sciences of Tétouan (ENSATE) at Abdelmalek Essaâdi University to reflect upon their experiences, insights, and perceptions of distance education with respect to teaching materials, content, and syllabus delivery. The aim, therefore, is to disclose the variant challenges that are being encountered by the aforementioned students and teachers, including their attitudes toward e-learning course content and pedagogy. Get PDFThe research paper titled‘Loss of Meaning in Translation: The Case Study of a Nepali Novel Basain’ was an attempt of the researcher to find out the cases of cultural meaning loss in the translation of a novel ‘Basain’. It further aimed to explore the causes of loss of meaning in translation. In addition, it aimed to analyze the ways that can be used to compensate the meaning gap in translation as well. Only the secondary sources of data were used in the study employing descriptive and analytical design along with qualitative data. Twenty two cases of meaning loss in the translation of the novel Basain were found. The study also explored causes of the loss of meaning to occur in translation. Some of the major causes were pointed out i.e. cultural gap, deletion, negligence of the translator, lack of functional equivalence, lack of co-cultural and socio-cultural knowledge (of the SL) of the translator, over generalization of the meaning, carelessness of the translator, incomplete linguistic knowledge (of the SL) of the translator, transliteration and so on

Pakistani candidates of master of philosophy degrees (18 years of education). For this purpose, a corpus of 100
acknowledgement texts has been developed and analyzed with the help of AntConc 3.4.4.0. Results reveal that Pakistani
master level acknowledgement writers use gratitude markers extravagantly to thank their contributors and use high
sounding adjectives exaggeratedly to increase the effect of thankfulness and glorify the acknowledged persons.

Conducting Needs Analysis for an English for Specific Purpose Course for Agricultural Sciences
Get PDFConducting a needs analysis is the very first step in designing English for Specific Purpose (ESP) course as well as
maintaining the quality of the course to fulfill the learners’ needs. This research intends to highlight the
procedures significant in conducting a needs analysis (NA) for designing English for specific purpose course for the
ESL learners of B.S. (Hons.) agriculture sciences at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, (UAF) Pakistan. Data for
need analysis were collected through a questionnaire, document analysis and test techniques. It was observed that the
ESL learners of graduate level at University of Agriculture Faisalabad were taught general English courses which were
not sufficient to fulfill their communicative needs. Therefore, there is a need of an ESP Agriculture science course.
Suggestions have also been recommended to design ESP Agriculture Sciences course for these ESL learners
