    Thermomagnetic convection in stratified ferrofluids permeated with dusty particles through a porous medium

    In the present note, the stability problem of an incompressible dusty stratified ferromagnetic fluid is investigated through a porous medium when the fluid layer is subjected to vertical magnetic field intensity. The governing nonlinear equations are linearized using perturbation technique and the cases of exponentially varying stratifications for various physical parameters are discussed. The system is found to be stable for stable stratification in both the absence and presence of magnetic field. For unstable stratification, the system has both stabilizing and destabilizing effects in the presence of magnetic field under certain conditions, whereas in the absence of magnetic field, the system has only destabilizing effect. The variations in the growth rate with respect to kinematic viscosity, medium porosity, medium permeability, square of Alfvén velocity and suspended particle parameter are also shown analytically

    Comparative study for Utilization of machines in the Flow-Shop Scheduling Problems

    Scheduling is the procedure of generating the schedule which is a physical document and generally informs the happening of things and demonstrate a plan for the timing of certain activities. The flow shop problem is one of the most widely studied classical scheduling problems and reflects real operation of several industries. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the performance of four methods when it is used to solve flow shop scheduling problems with minimization makespan. The four heuristics methods are Johnson, Palmer, CDS and Gupta methods. In this work, an attempt has been made to solve the flow shop scheduling problem for comparative study for utilization of machines in the flow-shop scheduling problems among pervious methods.  A simulation study has been made to evaluate the performance of the four method under consideration based on two performance measures  makespan and utilization of machine , the results has been proved  that the Palmer and CDS heuristic methods show the minimum value of average of makespan and average utilization of machine  when it compared with other heuristic methods

    Effects of Aqueous Tuber Extract of Ipomea batatas on Cardiac Enzymes, Lipid Profile and Organ Weights in Wistar Rats

    Ipomea batatas (I. batatas) commonly called Sweet potato are cultivated for food in more than 100 countries; the tuber is used as food without recourse to its toxic implications. Therefore, this research was designed to evaluate the effects of aqueous tuber extract of I. batatas on some organ weights, cardiac enzymes and lipid profile in Wistar rats. Twenty (20) male Wistar rats were divided into four (4) groups, each group consisting of five (5) animals. Group 1: was administered with distilled water while Groups 2, 3 and 4 were treated with 200,400, and 800 mg/ kg b.w doses of the extract of I. batatas respectively. The rats were sacrificed 24 h after treatment for twenty one (21) days. Serum obtained was used for analysis of the concentrations of creatine kinase (CK-MB), creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein activity. Administered I. batatas extract at doses of 200, 400, and 800 mg kg-1 resulted significantly (P < 0.05) to increased mean weight of the body and organ weights (lung, liver and heart) of the rats respectively. There was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in weight of testis but the effect on weight of seminal vesicle and epididymis was not significant (P > 0.05). There was reduction in the levels of triglyceride and total cholesterol, but this effect was not significant (P > 0.05). Administration of the extract at doses of 200, and 800 mg/kg b w significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the serum creatine kinase (CK-MB) and lactate dehydrogenase activity. These findings may probably suggest the cardio-protective effects of aqueous tuber extract of I. batatas at doses tested

    Histomorphometric Findings on the Neocerebellar Purkinje Cells and Layer V Cerebral Pyramidal Cells Following Monosodium Glutamate Exposures.

    This study assessed some effects of monosodium glutamate which is one of  the most abundant naturally occurring amino-acids that is frequently used as a seasoning material on   histomorphometry on neocerebellar Purkinje and layer V neocerebral motor pyramidal cells in adult Wistar rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight adult male Wistar rats weighing between 70-130g (8-10 weeks old) were randomly separated into four groups, each containing twelve rats. The rats in group A were regarded as the controls and they received only distilled water during the treatment period. The Wistar rats in group B, C and D received respectively 2g/kg, 4/kg and 6g/kg body weight of MSG orally once duty for 28 consecutive days. The rats were euthanized on 29th day and the whole brain and cerebellum were carefully excised, weighed   and immediately fixed in 10% buffered formal saline for histological procedures for evaluation by light microscopy. RESULTS:  The results of the total brain and cerebellar weights did not show any significant difference (P > 0.05) between the MSG – treated and control rats. However, there were significant differences (P < 0.05) in the relative total brain and relative cerebellar weights between the MSG – treated and control rats. Morphometric findings showed significant differences in the transverse diameters of neocerebellar Purkinje and layer V neocerebral pyramidal cells between the MSG – treated and control rats. The transverse diameters of Purkinje and pyramidal cells were significantly reduced (P<0.05) in MSG-treated rats compared with controls. Similarly, the neocerellar Purkinje cell  and layer V pyramidal cell densities were significantly reduced (P < 0.05) in MSG – treated rats compared with controls. Additionally, the silver stained sections showed normal Purkinje and pyramidal cells with regular outlines and the processes penetrating the parenchyma   in control sections while, the MSG-treated sections showed morphological evidence of neuronal loss and dead neurons. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that prolonged exposure to MSG may result in neocerebellar and layer V neocerebral cortical damage and neuronal degeneration and shrinkages that might be due to oxidative stress induced by neurotoxicity of MSG and consequently the motor cerebral and cerebellar functions might be compromised

    Physician Refusal or Withdrawal of Patient Treatment at Healthcare System of A University Hospital in Turkey

    The refusal of the physician to give treatment to the patient is the end of relationship between the physician and the patient. The withdraw is end of relationship which has begun between the physician and the patient. The refuse or withdraw of the patient treatment, which constitutes a perception like the same act, causes significant ethical problems in the provision of health care. We carried out our research to identify physicians\u27 considerations. We conducted a survey study between Research Assistants working in Clinical Departments in Inonu University Turgut Ozal Medical Center and in the treatment of patients. In study, 81 (80.2%) physicians were the most important factor in the refusal of the physician to give treatment to the patient, the patient or relative physical violence application. The reason for the refused was the patient who had psychological stress exerted 12 (11.9%), the medical difficulty was 7 (6.9%) and the patient 1 (1.0%) did not trust the physician\u27s knowledge. It is possible to say that the main reason for the refusal of the patient treatment or withdraw treatment is the physician\u27s injury of the honour

    Pro-inflammatory Cytokines Levels in Obese and Diabetic Egyptians & its Correlation with Cardiometabolic Syndrome.

    Background: To date, the mechanisms linking components underlying the cardiometabolic syndrome (also known metabolic syndrome) remain unclear and other investigators have suggested that inflammation plays a primary pathogenic role. Pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α) are released from macrophages within the vessel wall during an inflammatory response. These cytokines mediate distant inflammatory effects, including activation of hepatic genes encoding acute phase reactant CRP. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the levels of these pro-inflammatory markers in Egyptian obese and diabetic subjects and their correlation with metabolic syndrome. Results: Our results showed that there were statistically significant differences among studied groups in the inflammatory markers (hs- CRP, IL-6 & TNF- α), being higher in obese and diabetics. Significant positive correlation was seen between inflammatory markers and most of metabolic syndrome markers. Conclusion: Our results are confirming the role of pro-inflammatory markers in the development and pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome in Egyptians

    Metformin Intoxication, Lactic Acidosis and Death: Case Report

    Metformin is an oral antidiabetic agent used as  in the treatment of T2DM. A fearsome complication of the use of metformin is lactic acidosis. A nineteen-year-old woman was unconscious and cyanotic in her home. It has been found that about 50 grams of metformin is taken for the purpose of suicide. Glaskow Coma Scale 4/15, Blood Pressure: 70 / 30mmHg, lactic acidosis was detected. Despite the hemodialysis procedure, the patient passed away. Metformin, the keystone of diabetes treatment, inhibits gluconeogenesis, improve insulin resistance, and is excreted in the kidneys without being metabolized. Metformin rarely makes lactic acidosis. High doses of metformin and renal impairment facilitate the formation of lactic acidosis. There is a direct relationship between the degree of lactic acidosis and mortality. Lactic acidosis is thought to be due to the accumulation of lactate by the inhibition of gluconeogenesis. Metformin intoxication may kill the patient through lactic acidosis

    Management Practices of Ward Supervisors and Patient Care Satisfaction

    Quality of patient care must not be overlooked even though the domain of patient care at present is fast growing. Ward supervisors are the front line leaders of nursing staff in care of patients in the hospital and they are at the middle level of management. They create an environment that ensures the delivery of safe and high-quality patient care, high patient satisfactory rates, and positive patient outcomes. This study was made to evaluate the quality of nursing care in hospitals by measuring patient care satisfaction with the managerial roles of the ward supervisors taken into consideration; no studies have yet been formally conducted among hospitals in Zamboanga City. The study conducted was a descriptive correlational design that focused on the management practices of ward supervisors and its relationship on patient care satisfaction at Hospital X in Zamboanga City. The respondents will composed of 100 staff nurses who will evaluate the management practices of ward supervisors and 100 adult patients who will evaluate the nursing care provided by the staff nurses. The study will utilize the non-probability, purposive sampling method. The researcher utilized the Pearson product moment to identify the relationship of the two identified variables. In the conclusion, the nursing staffs were satisfied of the ward supervisors’ management practices as well as the patients were also satisfied with the nursing care received from the staff nurses. Although the results were remarkable, the study reveals that the there was no relationship between the ward supervisors management practices and the level of patient care satisfaction at Hospital X. The recommendation is to develop training design for leadership and management for ward supervisors to much more improve the skills in management of their respective areas to help motivate the staff nurses in their nursing care provided to patients

    In vivo Effects of Black and Green Tea on Serum Lipid Profile and Cardiac Function in Hyperlipidemic Rats

    Objective: The study was designed to investigate the in vivo effects of black and green tea consumption on serum lipid profile and cardiac function in hyperlipidemic rats. Methods: 24 male Wistar rats, average weight 125 g were sorted into four groups: A, B, C and D. Normal control group (A) were fed standard rat chow; the remaining three groups (B, C and D) received rat chow supplemented with 2% (w/w) cholesterol to induce hypercholesterolemia. Group C and D were administered 40 mg/ml of black and green tea respectively while group B (hyperlipidemic control) were not treated. The feeding and tea administration lasted 6 weeks. Results: Significant reduction in body weight and heart weight index was recorded in rats administered black and green tea compared with the untreated group. Black and green tea consumption also caused significant decrease in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk ratio accompanied with elevated HDL-cholesterol compared to untreated group. Significant alterations in cardiac marker enzymes: creatine kinase (CK), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were also observed in serum and heart homogenates of untreated hyperlipidemic rats which were normalized in rats administered the teas. These results are synonymous with decreased risk of atherosclerosis and protective potential on cardiac function by green and black tea. Conclusion: We conclude in this study that regular intake of black and green tea might be useful in treatment of obesity and prevention of cardiovascular complications arising from hyperlipidemia
