    Effect of zinc (II)-manganese (II)-cobalt (II) trace metal ion mixture on the growth of wild-type Lacticaseibacillus casei under nutrient-sufficient conditions

    The interplay between diet and human gut microbiota is paramount in elucidating the molecular dynamics of human health. Proper nutrition from diet includes a complex mixture of essential trace metal ions having numerous biological properties in intermediary metabolism and enzymatic mechanisms. These metal ion-specific biological functions, in turn, may be associated to the overall abundance of gut microbiota affecting both the bacteria and human intestinal homeostasis. Although the molecular effects of individual metal cations have been established, the effects of a threecomponent trace metal ion mixture comprising Zn2+, Mn2+, and Co2+ on Lacticaseibacillus casei, a representative probiotic human gut bacterium, remain elusive. This study investigated the influence of these trace metals, both individually and as mixtures, on the growth of wild-type L. casei. The result of the antimicrobial assay demonstrated a general decline in L. casei viability with treatments containing 0 to 100 ppm of Co2+, 0 to 500 ppm of Mn2+, and 0 to 750 ppm of Zn2+. Findings revealed that L. casei had lower tolerance for Co2+ (MIC50 = 10.04 ± 0.0827 ppm) than Mn2+ (MIC50 = 24.63 ± 0.1015 ppm) and Zn2+ (MIC50 = 129.17 ± 0.0690 ppm). Among the 18 mixtures, statistical analyses via ANOVA and post-hoc Bonferroni test showed significant differences in viability between Mixture 6 and 17 (p \u3c 0.05) which elicited the strongest and weakest inhibitory effects on L. casei growth, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed corrugations in L. casei surface membrane topology after exposure to Mixture 6. Zn2+-treated cells displayed apoptotic-like features and cellular debris, while Mn2+- and Co2+-treated cells exhibited cell splitting at MIC50. Overall, our findings elucidated L. casei tolerance to Zn2+, Mn2+, and Co2+, and their mixtures, under nutrient-sufficient conditions. Further investigations should focus on (1) the effects of varying essential trace metal ion concentrations on the composition and function of the gut microbiome through sequencing techniques and (2) physiologically relevant biotechnological applications to improve probiotic L. casei design under extreme metal doses

    The domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus), sometimes known as the pugok or native pig, is a widely distributed animal with unique genetic characteristics influenced by a variety of environmental factors and selected elements. This study used meta-analysis on the following variables: age, antibiotic exposure, diet, climate, and geographic location in order to validate changes in the compositions of the fecal microbiota in native pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus).The objective of this study was to comprehend the global differences in the fecal microbiota makeup of native pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing data from databases, a meta-analysis was conducted. High-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, processed using the DADA2 pipeline for quality control and taxonomy identification, was one of the contemporary techniques used in the study. The findings revealed certain patterns in the composition of pig’s microbiome with respect to the age, antibiotic exposure, diet, climate, and geographic location. Particularly, comparable diets and agricultural techniques in North America and Europe resulted in comparable microbial assemblages, but tropical regions, such as those seen in Africa, fostered a diversity of microbial populations because of their distinct climatic circumstances and use of organic farming techniques. The study also validated the impact of age, observing that younger pigs had less diversified microbial communities than older pigs

    A correlational study on the travel distance and the first quarter general weighted average among the Special Health Sciences Grade 11 Senior High School students

    Throughout the ages, academic performance has always been affected by a spectrum of varied factors that are continuously studied worldwide. In the Philippines where the travel to and from the institution plays a big part in the academic lives of the students, this study has been conducted to assess the existence of a significant relationship between the travel-related factors and the student’s first quarter General Weighted Average (GWA). The research utilized a quantitative survey of self-made questions, analyzed using Spearman’s RankOrder Correlation to the 360 grade 11 students of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute Special Health Sciences Senior High School. The findings suggest that all three variables have inverse influence on the GWA due to their negative correlation. However, travel distance and travel time show a very weak correlation and only transportation accessibility has a significant relationship to the GWA. Additionally, it was found that the students\u27 grade averages were better when they walked to school, followed by private and public transportation. Since the results showed only one variable determining the student\u27s academic performance, there may be other unexplored variables that need to be considered

    This study explored the influence of the Mukbang Phenomenon on Filipino adolescents’ eating habits and food preferences, focusing on senior high school students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). Employing a descriptive mixed-methods approach, the research investigated the prevalence of Mukbang viewership, motivations for watching, perceived changes in eating habits, and student perceptions of Mukbang’s impact. Findings revealed a gender disparity in viewership, with more girls watching Mukbangs. While students reported healthy eating habits at home, social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram influence their food desires. Mukbang videos have moderate impact on their eating behaviors. Despite being aware of the adverse health effects associated with watching Mukbangs, students reported a moderate change in their eating habits and food preferences as a consequence of indulging in Mukbang content. Notably, watching Mukbangs is associated with cravings for certain foods and larger portion sizes, despite student awareness of potential downsides. This study suggests the need for media literacy through media education to equip students with critical thinking skills when engaging with online contents. This study also highlights the importance of further research on the long-term effects of Mukbang viewership on adolescents’ eating behavior
