Perspectives of primary school teachers on the academic participation of primary school students following the environmental modifications in public elementary schools in Dasmariñas City, Cavite for Academic Year 2023-2024
This study investigates primary school teachers’ perspectives on the academic participation of students following the implementation of DepEd Order No. 021, s. 2023, which mandated the removal of classroom decorations. Utilizing a descriptive phenomenological approach, the research captures the lived experiences of 22 kindergarten to grade 3 teachers from the three most populated public elementary schools in Dasmariñas, Cavite. Data were gathered through expert-validated, semi-structured interviews to explore observed changes in student behavior, particularly in active listening, grades, and general weighted averages. Results indicate that while the absence of visual stimuli initially hindered student engagement and learning, it also fostered improved active listening skills. Teachers implemented alternative strategies—such as the increased use of structured visual aids and interactive activities—to compensate for the loss, effectively sustaining students’ academic performance. The findings underscore the essential role of a visually stimulating classroom environment in supporting diverse learning needs, with teachers expressing a strong preference for the return of classroom decorations to optimize student participation and achievement
Effects of diabetic management compliance to work engagement and generativity of persons with type II diabetes mellitus in Cavite
The study determined the effects of diabetic management compliance on work engagement and generativity of persons with Type II Diabetes Mellitus in Cavite, Philippines. A non-randomized causal research design was used within the study to investigate the relationship between the variables. Quantitative data was gathered through a questionnaire created with a combination of self-made and standardized questions, then measured with a Likert Scale. The 50 participants for this study were permanent residents of Cavite, Philippines, aged between 30 to 64, diagnosed with Type II Diabetes Mellitus for at least 5 years, and had minimum work experience for 5 years. The respondents were gathered through non-randomized sampling. Both the screening and answering the questionnaire were done online through Google Forms. The study’s results revealed that participants have high compliance with diabetic management protocols and a high level of generativity. Level of work engagement is revealed to only be minimally affected by diabetes symptoms, as such, diabetic management compliance has no significant effect on work engagement. However, diabetic management compliance has been identified as a factor that can enhance a person’s status of generativity, as higher compliance leads to higher status of generativity. Given the lack of studies on the topic, further research is needed to understand the correlation between diabetic management compliance, work engagement, and generativity of the identified population
Antibacterial activity of ethanolic crude extract of Flammulina filiformis (enoki mushrooms) against Escherichia coli
Mushrooms are commonly used in various industries for their healing properties, with an increasing number of studies affirming their potential as sources of novel antibacterial compounds. With the rising threat of antibioticresistant bacteria on a global scale, there has been an urgent need to find good alternative antibacterial treatments. This study aims to contribute towards combating this issue by providing an additional option for alternative medicine that is affordable, accessible, and sustainable. The study screened a commonly consumed mushroom in Asian cuisine, Enoki Mushrooms, for the presence of antibacterial activity against a common gram-negative bacterium—Escherichia coli. Researchers utilized quantitative experimental research design and conducted the experiment via the Kirby-Bauer Disc Diffusion method to determine a cause-and-effect relationship between the extracts from the Enoki Mushroom and the diameter of the zone of inhibition. The results show that different concentrations of Enoki Mushroom exhibited an acceptable mean zone of inhibition of greater than 15 millimeters (\u3e15mm), which means that the Enoki Mushroom extracts tested positive for its antibacterial activity against E. coli. Given the positive results for antibacterial activity, researchers conclude that the Flammulina filiformis (Enoki Mushroom) has potential to be considered as an antibiotic agent against gram-negative bacteria
Perceptions of Filipino DLSMHSI students AY 2023-2024 on working abroad
Despite producing qualified health professionals, the healthcare industry in the Philippines faces challenges, with migration exacerbating workforce shortages. Thus, this study investigated the perceptions of Filipino students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) regarding working abroad during the academic year 2023-2024, focusing on undergraduate medical field students. The research aimed to identify factors influencing their desire or reluctance to work abroad anchored in the Push and Pull Theory. Descriptive quantitative research was conducted among DLSMHSI students in Dasmariñas City, Cavite through online questionnaires. Through an input-process-output design, findings revealed that third-year and fourth-year students exhibited the highest perception levels of push factors within the Philippines and pull factors from other countries. Regardless of socio-economic differences, respondents expressed a desire to pursue opportunities abroad. Moreover, the underdeveloped health infrastructures in the Philippines served as a strong push factor, urging future healthcare workers to seek opportunities abroad. Conversely, the availability of advanced technology resources in destination countries served as a significant pull factor, attracting future Filipino healthcare workers. Furthermore, Nursing and Medical Laboratory Sciences students were identified to have the highest tendency to work in foreign countries. This research elucidated the perceptions of future Filipino healthcare practitioners regarding overseas employment, contributing to a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. This paper also sheds light on the urgency of addressing push factors in the Philippines and implementing effective retention strategies to mitigate the loss of healthcare professionals
The antifungal activity of Rauwolfia serpentina (indian snakeroot) seed oil extract against Candida albicans
Drug-resistant fungal infections have made it challenging for healthcare professionals, researchers, and pharmaceutical companies to develop cures for fungal infections. Candida albicans, a fungal pathogen, poses a significant impediment in this area.
This study explores the potential of Rauwolfia serpentina seed oil extract as an antifungal agent against Candida albicans. Three (3) varying concentrations of the plant seed oil extract were used in the study, with concentrations of 50%, 75%, and 100%. The positive control utilized in the study was Nystatin while the negative control used was Acetone. The extraction method that was utilized is the Rotary Evaporation Method and the antifungal activity of Rauwolfia serpentina was observed using the Kirby-Bauer Disc Diffusion test. The susceptibility criteria of Nystatin against Candida albicans was also considered, along with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), to determine the significant difference among the varying concentrations of plant seed oil extract against the fungal species. The findings of the study revealed that Candida albicans exhibited resistance to the seed oil extract of Rauwolfia serpentina despite expectations for antifungal activity. This resistance underscores factors of the different variables of the study such as the species and the mode of action of the plant and fungi, and this highlights the necessity for further research to elucidate the mechanisms involved and explore alternative strategies such as using a different Rauwolfia species for combating Candida albicans infections
The percentage of potential hearing-related problems based on the type of listening device utilized among Special Health Sciences Senior High School students
In a generation of modern technology, personal listening devices (PLDs) have become a part of one’s lifestyle among the youth, and this study has shown that their usage has had significant impacts on hearing health. The study aims to evaluate the prevalence of symptoms experienced by those who use PLDs based on their preferences for the type of device and their habits of using these devices. The study is quantitative descriptive research that uses a survey questionnaire to collect data from SHSHSHS students. Results of the study show that students who use wireless in-ear earbuds, students with listening habits of more than 1 hour per day, and students who listen with volume levels above 50% contribute the most to the percentage of potential hearing-related symptoms (mostly tinnitus and impaired hearing) experienced among the SHSSHS students. The study reveals that wireless in-ear earbuds are the most undesirable option to use and that safer options for PLDs include speakers or on-ear or over-ear headphones. Based on the results, the recommended usage of PLDs should only be kept at most an hour per day and at a volume level below 50% to prevent the potential development of hearing-related problems
