Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the MHI-9: A Brief Dual-Factor Mental Health Screener for Nonclinical Filipino University Students
Objective: The study aimed to develop and evaluate the Mental Health Inventory-9 (MHI-9), a brief dual-factor screener of psychological distress and well-being for nonclinical Filipino university students. Method: A total of 1,474 students ages 18 to 24 completed the Mental Health Inventory-38, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and College Student Subjective Well-Being Questionnaire. Stratified subsamples underwent confirmatory factor analysis, graded response item response theory, measurement invariance testing, and receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results: Evidence supported interpreting scores as reflecting distinct psychological distress and psychological well-being dimensions, with strong item discrimination and balanced coverage. Reliability estimates for scores were high. Associations with anxiety, depression, and well-being measures aligned with theoretical expectations, and screening analyses indicated effective identification of students at elevated risk. Measurement invariance supported comparable interpretations across sex and community type. Conclusion: The MHI-9 yields reliable scores and evidence for the validity of their interpretations, offering a culturally adapted, rapid screening option to guide early, school-based mental health intervention in Philippine higher education
Delphi consensus on melasma management by international experts and pigmentary disorders society
Background: Melasma, an acquired hyperpigmentation disorder, affects individuals of all ethnicities. Its multifactorial aetiology, high recurrence rates and psychosocial impact complicate management and necessitate comprehensive, evidence-based recommendations. Objectives: The objective was to develop an international consensus on the diagnosis and management of melasma by synthesizing expert opinions and the latest scientific evidence. Methods: This consensus was developed using a modified Delphi approach. A core group of two senior dermatologists who were experts in pigmentary disorders guided the process, and a diverse panel of 38 dermatologists with a special interest in pigmentary disorders from 11 countries (Australia, Brazil, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan and the USA) participated in three rounds of surveys and discussions, under the aegis of the Pigmentary Disorders Society (PDS). A literature search of articles published between 2014 and 2024 identified key studies that were graded using the Oxford levels of evidence (2009). Consensus statements were drafted, refined and finalized based on expert feedback. Responses were assessed using a 5-point Likert scale, with predefined thresholds for high (≥75%), moderate (55%–74%) and low (\u3c55%) agreement. Results: The consensus development process started with 34 statements, and at the end of the third round of the Delphi process, 21, 4 and 1 statement reached high, moderate and low consensus, respectively. Key recommendations highlighted photoprotection with broad-spectrum sunscreens as essential, regulated and supervised use of hydroquinone-based triple combination creams as the gold standard, and alternatives such as topical azelaic acid, kojic acid and oral tranexamic acid. Adjunctive procedural therapies, such as chemical peels and microneedling, were suggested to enhance topical efficacy, while lasers were reserved for refractory cases. Conclusion: These recommendations aim to improve the outcomes of melasma patients globally by integrating expert opinion and evidence-based strategies. Future research should focus on evaluating emerging therapies and optimizing long-term maintenance strategies
Perceived impact of interprofessional education on the work performance of the College of Medical Laboratory Science alumni
This study investigated the attitudes of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) alumni from De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) toward interprofessional collaborative practice and the perceived impact of Interprofessional Education (IPE) on their work performance. A descriptive-quantitative design was employed, utilizing a structured, validated survey distributed via Google Forms to a stratified sample of 33 licensed MLS graduates from 2022 to 2024. Results revealed a very positive attitude toward interprofessional collaboration, with an overall mean score of 4.57. Respondents strongly agreed on the importance of effective communication, teamwork, and mutual respect within interdisciplinary healthcare environments. Similarly, the perceived impact of IPE on work performance was highly positive (mean = 4.45), with respondents noting improvements in teamwork, application of theoretical knowledge, patient-centeredness, communication skills, and confidence in laboratory practice. Inferential analysis using the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated no statistically significant differences in attitudes or perceived impact across demographic variables such as age, sex, year graduated, laboratory classification, or job position. These findings suggest that IPE fosters consistent professional competencies and collaborative behaviors across diverse subgroups. Despite limitations in participant eligibility and sample size, the study highlights the critical role of IPE in preparing MLS graduates for team-based healthcare environments. Recommendations include longitudinal studies, expansion to other health disciplines, and curricular enhancements focused on communication competencies. Overall, the study underscores IPE’s value in strengthening both professional attitudes and workplace performance among health-allied graduates
Perceptions on the integration of speech-language pathology services in Primary care: focus group discussions with registered speech-language Pathologists from de la salle medical and health sciences institute
This study explored the perceptions of registered speech-language pathologists (RSLPs) on the integration of their services in primary care (PC), focusing on the components of the Primary Care Policy Framework by the Department of Health. A qualitative phenomenological design was utilized wherein two focus group discussions (FGDs) were held to collect data. Each focus group consisted of three SLP administrators and faculty members respectively. The FGDs were guided by a validated focus group discussion guide and moderated by an RSLP external to the group to ensure objectivity. Three main themes were identified: (1) definition and characteristics of primary care; (2) existing health systems and policies, or the lack thereof, on the integration of SLP services in PC; (3) and health system reforms, formulation of policies, and adequate funding and support from all stakeholders that are necessary to effectively integrate SLP services in PC. Findings reveal that while RSLPs recognize the importance of integrating SLP services in PC, several barriers remain. Despite their expressed interest in working in PC, reservations such as lack of existing policies, limited awareness, as well as lack of resources and compensation hinder comprehensive integration—emphasizing the need for advocacy, collaboration, research, and policy-making reforms to address these challenges. In summary, the study explored RSLPs’ perspectives on integrating SLP services in PC—revealing key barriers and opportunities. Recommendations include addressing study limitations, guiding future research, aid in shaping policy development, and enhance awareness

The effect of patient education regarding physical therapy intervention as management of menopausal symptoms in the knowledge of menopausal women in Dasmariñas, Cavite
Menopause is a natural part of aging in women, occurring between the early forties and mid-fifties. Unfortunately, most women have limited knowledge of its symptoms and the role of physical therapy in alleviating these symptoms and minimizing the associated health risks of menopause. Moreover, the role of patient education in improving their knowledge is not completely explored, especially in the Philippines. This study primarily aims to determine the effect of patient education on the knowledge of menopausal symptoms, risk prevention, and appropriate physical therapy interventions among women. In this quasi-experimental study, 60 participants were gathered and screened using the established inclusion and exclusion criteria. Each participant accomplished a demographic survey, a pre-test, and a post-test. All research instruments were made by the researchers, which also included an educational program or seminar and brochures. Demographic data were summarized using frequency and percentage distribution, while the pre- and post-tests were analyzed using a paired t-test. Based on the gathered data, the majority of the participants in Salitran IV, Cavite fall under the 35-39 age group, with asthma being the most common comorbidity, and irritability as the most common menopausal symptom. Results showed a significant improvement in menopause management and its prevention. However, no significant difference was found in background knowledge since participants already had proficient knowledge of menopause before the seminar. Overall, the seminar effectively increased participants’ knowledge from developing to a proficient level after the patient education. Ultimately, providing patient education on menopausal women increases their knowledge level regarding menopausal symptoms and their management using physical therapy interventions
Synergistic anti-angiogenic activity of green-synthesized selenium nanoparticles from Aloe barbadensis miller (aloe vera) leaves extract
This study evaluated the anti-angiogenic effects of Aloe barbadensis Miller (Aloe vera) leaf extract (ALE), sodium selenite (SSE), and green-synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. Treatments at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% concentrations were assessed for their ability to inhibit vascular branching. ALE showed the most potent, dose-dependent anti-angiogenic activity, with 100% ALE significantly outperforming controls. SSE also inhibited angiogenesis at all concentrations but with less consistent trends. SeNPs demonstrated significant inhibition only at 25%, with decreased efficacy at higher concentrations. This was attributed to nanoparticle agglomeration and instability, leading to biological interference and reduced activity. Statistical analysis showed no synergistic effect of SeNPs over their precursors. In conclusion, Aloe vera extract proved to be the most reliable anti-angiogenic agent. While SeNPs hold theoretical promise, their current formulation exhibited interference rather than enhancement, indicating a need for improved nanoparticle stability
