Exploration of VR-based training with a prototype for The installation of building-integrated photovoltaic and Thermal systems

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to improve the comprehension of the design and installation of building integrated photovoltaic and thermal (BIPV/T) systems in a virtual environment and thus contribute to a improved technology acceptance. The focus is on the development of a prototype to quantify the effectiveness. A detailed analysis of different Virtual Reality (VR) use cases is carried out through a systematic literature review and expert interviews. This analysis leads to the selection of a specific use case for the development of a prototype. The VR prototype for the installation of BIPV/T systems is comprehensively developed and four factors are analysed: game development factors, user-related influences, effects on motivation and confidence, and success of knowledge transfer. The results show a low influence of VR experience, age and technical background on usability. The positive effects of the "learning by doing" approach are emphasised, while the challenges of design limitations and validation methods in knowledge transfer are highlighted. In summary, the work shows that the VR-based training tool has great potential for training interested stakeholders in the construction industry in the field of BIPV/T. The prototype successfully conveys the potential of BIPV/T systems and the simplicity of installation. This increases acceptance and confidence in a smooth installation to increase the use of sustainable energy generation
