SUBJUGATION TO LIBERATION: IN TASLIMA NASRIN’S NOVEL SHODH
Get PDFTaslima Nasrin is a secular humanist writer who fights for the freedom, equality and rights of women in her works. Woman is considered as ‘other’, less human being and ‘object’ in male dominated society. They are suppressed, oppressed and limited to the four walls of the house. Thus provided subjugated position in the patriarchal society. Nasrin’s novel Shodh truly, emphasize on subjugation to liberation where Jhumur, the protagonist, liberates herself in her own unique way. In the novel Shodh, the protagonist is restrained to family and ‘womb’. This novel revolves around, restricting her status to an ‘incomplete’ individual, one who defined ‘with reference to man’. The protagonist further uprooted patriarchal norms by rebel and liberated to get her own status in society. Shodh is all about revenge (getting even), and then upliftment of woman. In the end of the novel, Jhumur got freedom and free herself from the shackles of the society. Now she has liberated herself by getting social and economical equality and stability

As one of the epoch-making writer of the contemporary Indian writing in English, Shashi Deshpande is the confident voice, who explores individual and universal feminine psyche she has gained repute as a grave writer with marvelous potential. Almost all her protagonists are women who are sophisticated and exposed to western ideas. Contemporary women stand on the verge of social change in an enviable position. They are extremely aware of the prejudice heaped on them unlike their counterparts a generation ago. In fact, Shashi Deshpande does not consider women as inferior beings and so that they must remain inactive and dutiful. This awakening of the female’s consciousness as represented by Shashi Deshpande in her novels justifies the extent of articulation of a woman’s point of view, which needs to be evaluated from a new viewpoint

His deviant and striking choice of words to emphasize his intended meanings is really insightful. Present paper aims at pointing out the significant features of lexical deviations that are brought about by giving a new insight into the way Tennyson has used language in literature at the level of structure in his poetry. Comprehension of language largely depends upon lexis: the total stock of words available in a language for use and choice of words that are made by a poet for purposeful use of words. To use a language properly a poet is required to have learnt and understood a vocabulary and a set of rules describing how the items of a vocabulary are to be used in constructing sentences. In order to understand and learn the language of a poet properly we must go for style study which is the study of the use of language in literature by a particular poet or writer. It conducts the scientific study of any literary work by applying syntactic rules accurately on it and thus we can understand the creative use of language in literature even if deviant use of any literary devices is made by any literary artist to create desired literary effects on readers

The Lacuna of Secondary Skills Among High School Students of South Coastal Andhra Pradesh
Get PDFThe present paper covers the teaching and learning process of English language teaching in government schools of Andhra Pradesh. As the aim of the syllabus by the SCERT, Andhra Pradesh, the learners of English are expected to achieve proper communication skills to apply it in the global context. Bright and Marc Gregor (1978) have remarked that “there is no language learning without exposure” At this juncture mere knowledge of English, based upon listening, speaking, reading and writing directed towards acquisition of communication skills among high school students. The present study intended to find out the lacuna of secondary skills in English language among the students at high school level. An Oxford dictionary defines lacuna as ‘an absent part’. This paper portrays the percentage of expected and achieved skills of the students which is technically the term called as ‘Lacuna’. Most of the students are promoted to the next classes without adequate all the skills expected by the SCERT. Gradually the differences between expected and achieved skills have been increasing by the students year by year. At this juncture, it is very much needed to fill the lacuna between expected and achieved skills among the students for the strong foundation of the students in the field of communication skills
