Theme of Collective Errors of Humanity in Shikasta by Doris Lessing
Get PDFAt times when the world ready for transformation with deconstruction, Nobel Laureate Doris Lessing (1919 – 2013) is an author whose wholistic vision and prophetic voice is much needed for understanding collective errors of Human beings. The present paper analyses one of her Novels Shikasta where she uses medium of science fiction for showing us the path we have chosen and our impending doom due to that.
Furthermore, the analysis is also aimed to show how Lessing uses literature to highlight the issues of colonialism, pollution, population, and draws a subtle connection between them. The paper aims to show Lessing’s views on misguided, unmanaged scientific growth and evolution
Imageries in “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Bliss”
Get PDFNorms for women have always been more inflexible, unyielding, and more clearly defined than for men. Such an approach towards the ‘weaker sex’ rigidly demarcates attitude, and behaviour, while simultaneously conditioning interpretation in a culture. In this ethos, anything that deviates from the custom is marked out as ‘unnatural’. Women writers like Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Katherine Mansfield examine such ‘unnatural’ subjects and choose to review and render the inner self of these unaccomodated women through vivid imageries which establish a direct connection between the internal world of these women and their outside repressive and despotic reality. This paper looks into the imageries employed by Gilman and Mansfield in their respective short stories “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Bliss” to illustrate the predicament of the women in these stories. It is only through these imageries that a lucid picture of the consciousness of these women is painted on the outside world which mostly is obstinate to the yearnings of these women

Eliot has given English poetry a new direction where the poet must not remain confined within his own self ,but must merge with his individual self in the social milieu,the public environment.Modern men become spiritually dead , they lack social value and have only love for materialistic outlook. The present poem holds up the mirror to understand the complex culture, spiritual degeneration and the post-industrial condition of the modern man that is relevant today. Thirst for Identity in James Welch’s Winter in the Blood: A Study of Rejection, Isolation and Segregation
Get PDF Society gifts a person with myriad of identities, in different places a person has to put up different attire. He has to juggle with the multiplicity of pretentiousness where he loses his uniqueness. Everything changes when the attire is ripped, damaged, torn, ragged and finally converted to rugs. A man then starts feeling miserable to see the original him. At certain spaces he feels rejected and tries to get alienated, which results in his isolation that makes him believe that he is standing without identity. In the novel, Winter in the Blood, we meet a thirty- two year old narrator who is nameless and is disheartened facing the societal challenges, who is rejected, isolated and segregated and has no corner to breathe a colorful life with shimmering sound. He thus, chooses a deep dark nook to breathe Nihilism. The narrator is so much normal to the entire non normal situations that now he feels nothing for any situation or person. We can see his losses, his pain, and his struggle for survival when we catch all twenty-two situations where he can adjure neither his love nor his fear. A sense of helplessness and the fear of being stalked by the shadow of white-men traumatize him and drag him towards alienation and isolation. The present paper aims at analyzing the crisis of self identity in the novel, Winter in the Blood.
 
Intersection of the Personal and the Political Life in Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom

In an autobiography, the autobiographical narrator engages in the reconfiguration and reconstruction of his own personal history which is inextricably connected to the social, political, economic and many other discursive contexts. Nelson Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom records the tension between the personal and the political in the context of Mandela’s life and shows how it resulted in the formation of a larger personal identity. Although Mandela’s autobiography revolves around the personal, the subjects that it incorporates are much broader and complex than a personal narrative. It is at the same time the story of his personal life and the story of how his country gained independence as seen and experienced by him. Mandela’s autobiography not only represents his personal life but it is also representative of an era. In writing his autobiography, he also writes the major political events that effected millions of lives. The autobiography documents Mandela’s life, the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and the struggle across Africa to shake off the control of colonial powers.
