    Large-scale reserve constrained alternating current optimal power flow methods

    The Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF) problem seeks optimal operational planning for power systems with the lowest cost within the operational and physical constraints, ensuring higher efficiency and reliability for the power system. Meanwhile, the power reserve scheduling, which ensures an adequate backup capacity to compensate for demand and supply fluctuations, contingencies, and various unforeseen disruptions, plays a crucial role in power system reliability. As power systems become more stochastic and dynamic, the co optimization of energy and reserve becomes a significant trend among independent system operators (ISOs) and regional transmission organizations (RTOs), as it yields substantial benefit improvement over independent optimizations. Furthermore, expanding ACOPF to a multi-period format captures temporal dependencies and operational dynamics, enabling more comprehensive modeling of realistic power system operation, which enhances strategic management of the power system. However, the large-scale nature of the power system, the inherent nonlinearity and nonconvexity of the ACOPF, the increased model complexity due to the additional reserve scheduling, and the expanded model scale with linked decision variables across time periods, collectively contribute to substantial computational complexity, making it a challenging optimization problem. To tackle this challenge and achieve a fast, optimal, and reliable power system operational planning, the proposed research develops advanced solution methods involving two representative endeavors: the development of mathematical optimization algorithms with enhanced computational efficiency, and the investigation of the decomposition techniques along with the implementation on advanced computational resources. Firstly, the single-period reserve constrained ACOPF (RCOPF), which co-optimizes energy and reserve through detailed modeling of various reserve types with considering AC network constraint, is addressed with an accelerated primal-dual interior point (A-PDIPM) optimization algorithm. Secondly, the multi period RCOPF (M-RCOPF) is addressed with a parallel optimization approach, which enables problem decomposability by reformulating the intertemporal coupling constraints with introduced auxiliary variables, and decomposes the problem into two major solution modules. Each module consists of multiple independent smaller subproblems that are solved simultaneously in a fully parallel manner on the advanced High-Performance Computing (HPC) platform. As a result, the proposed methods effectively solve the large-scale reserve constrained ACOPF problems, ensuring efficient and reliable power system operation planning

    Cotton development, yield, and boll distribution response to row pattern and plant density

    The effects of row pattern and plant density on the ability of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to compensate and sustain profitable yields has been evaluated by many studies. However, new varieties exhibiting more vigorous growth and more exaggerated row patterns have yet to be evaluated. Therefore, experiments were conducted in Starkville, MS and Stoneville, MS in 2021 and 2022 to evaluate the influence of 1x1 skip row patterns and plant density on cotton growth, development, yield, boll distribution, and profitability. In 2021 there was no yield response due to plant population. However, in 2022, yields increased as plant density increased. Lint yield was greater in the solid row pattern when compared to the skip row pattern in three of four site years. Boll distribution was influenced both vertically and horizontally by row pattern and plant density

    Building Respect, Responsibility, and Reciprocity: Insights From a Rural STEM Research Practice Design Partnership

    Rural schools often have strong community involvement and thus can offer educational experiences to students that are more closely aligned with local people and places. However, curricula in rural schools rarely offer this same alignment. Partnerships with others, including higher education, can support rural schools in creating STEM curricula that center the resources and careers present in their communities. A research design practice partnership (RPDP) was created as a Third Space to enable the development of locally relevant STEM curricula. The partnership was formed focusing on respect, responsibility, and reciprocity, necessary tenets as the roles and goals of the project changed. Interviews with participants provide insights into the formation and maintenance of RPDPs, especially as roles changed and goals shifted. Collectively, the importance of having shared vision and goals for the project are a core part of establishing and maintaining respect. Responsibility is difficult to maintain within a Third Space, especially as members of long-term RPDPs change professionally. Reciprocity should be evidenced in many ways, starting at the onset of the RPDP, to establish a Third Space wherein all perspectives are valued and encouraged.     In this talk, author, photographer, and retired educator Jerry Boyd Jones reflects on the history of Starkville’s Needmore Community. Needmore, the oldest African American community in Starkville, has been central to the story and life of Starkville and surrounding areas for over a century. Through the efforts and ingenuity of its residents, Needmore became a center of culture and life in Starkville despite segregation and limited resources. Yet in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Needmore was targeted for removal by an Urban Renewal program that displaced many of its residents. The history of Needmore is a story of triumph in adverse circumstances, but also a story of intentional underdevelopment, important to both the past and the present of Starkville
